High-Bandwidth Low-Cost High-Speed Optical Fiber Links using Organic Light Emitting Diodes

Addressing drinking water salinity due to sea water intrusion in Praia de Leste, Parana, by a brackish water desalination pilot plant
Seawater intrusion into the Pombas River, source of freshwater to Praia de Leste on the coast of
Parana in Brazil presents a problem to the water utility as most water treatment plants in Brazil
are conventional. To find a solution to this problem, a pilot plant (1 m3
/h) consisting of ultrafiltration (UF) followed by reverse osmosis (RO) was developed and evaluated. For testing, brackish
water was produced with a concentration of 1,500 ± 100 mg/L of total dissolved solids (TDS), mixing
seawater and fresh water. To evaluate the water quality, TDS, electrical conductivity, pH, temperature,
apparent color, turbidity, alkalinity, total hardness, calcium, chloride and sulfate were monitored.
For operational performance, flowrates, osmotic pressure, filtration rate, recovery rate and mass balance were analyzed. On average, the UF system removed 96.4% of turbidity and 98.6% of apparent
color; whereas the RO system removed 99.4% of TDS. The overall average recovery (UF and RO)
was 45.81% with average osmotic pressure of 8.21 bar, filtration rate of 30.7 L/h/m2
in the UF system
and 21.7 L/h/m2
in the RO system. From a water quality point of view, the system was effective in
processing brackish into fresh water of high quality
Long-time Low-latency Quantum Memory by Dynamical Decoupling
Quantum memory is a central component for quantum information processing
devices, and will be required to provide high-fidelity storage of arbitrary
states, long storage times and small access latencies. Despite growing interest
in applying physical-layer error-suppression strategies to boost fidelities, it
has not previously been possible to meet such competing demands with a single
approach. Here we use an experimentally validated theoretical framework to
identify periodic repetition of a high-order dynamical decoupling sequence as a
systematic strategy to meet these challenges. We provide analytic
bounds-validated by numerical calculations-on the characteristics of the
relevant control sequences and show that a "stroboscopic saturation" of
coherence, or coherence plateau, can be engineered, even in the presence of
experimental imperfection. This permits high-fidelity storage for times that
can be exceptionally long, meaning that our device-independent results should
prove instrumental in producing practically useful quantum technologies.Comment: abstract and authors list fixe
Cystatin C and lactoferrin concentrations in biological fluids as possible prognostic factors in eye tumor development
Objectives. To investigate the possible role of cystatin C in eye biological fluids locally and in serum and lactoferrin revealing anti-tumor activity in eye tumor development. Background. The increased number of eye tumors was registered recently not only in the countries with high insolation, but also in the northern countries including Russia (11 cases per million of population). Search for new biological markers is important for diagnosis and prognosis in eye tumors. Cystatin C, an endogenous inhibitor of cysteine proteases, plays an important protective role in several tumors. Lactoferrin was shown to express anti-tumor and antiviral activities. It was hypothesized that cystatin C and lactoferrin could serve as possible biomarkers in the diagnosis of malignant and benign eye tumors. Study design. A total of 54 patients with choroidal melanoma and benign eye tumors were examined (part of them undergoing surgical treatment). Serum, tear fluid and intraocular fluid samples obtained from the anterior chamber of eyes in patients with choroidal melanoma were studied. Methods. Cystatin C concentration in serum and eye biological fluids was measured by commercial ELISA kits for human (BioVendor, Czechia); lactoferrin concentration – by Lactoferrin-strip D 4106 ELISA test systems (Vector-BEST, Novosibirsk Region, Russia). Results. Cystatin C concentration in serum of healthy persons was significantly higher as compared to tear and intraocular fluids. In patients with choroidal melanoma, increased cystatin C concentration was similar in tear fluid of both the eyes. Lactoferrin level in tear fluid of healthy persons was significantly higher than its serum level. Significantly increased lactoferrin concentration in tear fluid was noted in patients with benign and malignant eye tumors. Conclusion. Increased level of cystatin C in tear fluid seems to be a possible diagnostic factor in the eye tumors studied. However, it does not allow us to differentiate between malignant and benign eye tumors. Prevalence of transfusion-transmitted Chagas disease among multitransfused patients in Brazil
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Blood transfusion has always been an important route for Chagas Disease (CD) transmission. The high prevalence of CD in Latin America and its lifelong asymptomatic clinical picture pose a threat for the safety of the blood supply. The outcome of measures designed to improve transfusion safety can be assessed by evaluating the prevalence of CD among multitransfused patients</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In order to assess the impact of CD control measures on the safety of the blood supply, an observational cross-sectional study was designed to determine the prevalence of CD in 351 highly transfused patients, in which vectorial transmission was excluded. This study compared patients that received transfusion products before (n = 230) and after (n = 121) 1997, when measures to control transfusion-transmitted CD were fully implemented in Brazil.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The study group consisted of 351 patients exposed to high numbers of blood products during their lifetime (median number of units transfused = 51, range 10–2086). A higher prevalence of transfusion-transmitted CD (1.30%) was observed among multitransfused patients that received their first transfusion before 1997, compared with no cases of transfusion-transmitted CD among multitransfused patients transfused after that year. The magnitude of the exposure to blood products was similar among both groups (mean number of units transfused per year of exposure = 25.00 ± 26.46 and 23.99 ± 30.58 respectively; P = 0.75, Mann-Whitney test).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Multiple initiatives aimed to control vector and parental transmission of CD can significantly decrease transfusion-transmitted CD in Brazil. Our data suggest that mandatory donor screening for CD represents the most important measure to interrupt transmission of CD by blood transfusions.</p
Exploring beyond norms: social capital of pregnant women in Sri Lanka as a factor influencing health
Vitamin D in the general population of young adults with autism in the Faroe Islands
Vitamin D deficiency has been proposed as a possible risk factor for developing autism spectrum disorder (ASD). 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) levels were examined in a cross-sectional population-based study in the Faroe Islands. The case group consisting of a total population cohort of 40 individuals with ASD (aged 15–24 years) had significantly lower 25(OH)D3 than their 62 typically-developing siblings and their 77 parents, and also significantly lower than 40 healthy age and gender matched comparisons. There was a trend for males having lower 25(OH)D3 than females. Effects of age, month/season of birth, IQ, various subcategories of ASD and Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule score were also investigated, however, no association was found. The very low 25(OH)D3 in the ASD group suggests some underlying pathogenic mechanism

Depression is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder affecting approximately 10% of the world population. Despite this, the molecular mechanisms underlying the disorder are still not understood. Novel technologies such as proteomic-based platforms are beginning to offer new insights into this devastating illness, beyond those provided by the standard targeted methodologies. Here, we will show the potential of proteome analyses as a tool to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms of depression as well as the discovery of potential diagnostic, therapeutic and disease course biomarkers
