Froylán Turcios (1874-1943) y el modernismo en Centroamérica

Honduran Modernist Froylán Turcios was one of the most educated and informed writers of his time. He was known as a director of magazines, an organiser of cultural events, a journalist and a diplomat. In a Honduran context, he stands out as a poet alongside Juan Ramón Molina (1875-1908), whom he accompanied to the Third Pan-American Conference which was held in Río de Janeiro in 1906. It was there that these two Hondurans met Rubén Darío, in what was to be the beginning of a close friendship. The article also considers Turcios’ relations with other Central American writers, some of them forgotten, but all of them important figures in the Modernism of the region: Rafael Ángel Troyo, from Costa Rica; Arturo Ambrogi, from Salvador; Rafael Arévalo Martínez, from Guatemala. Stellar Populations, Bars and Secular Evolution in Late-Type Galaxies

We have done a robust statistical analysis of UBV color profiles of 257 Sbc barred and unbarred galaxies. We found that there is an excess of barred galaxies among the objects with null or positive (bluish inward) color gradients, which seems to indicate that bars act as a mechanism of homogenization of the stellar population along galaxies. Moreover, the relationship found between total and bulge colors shows that, in the process of homogenization, the stellar population of bulges are getting bluer, whereas the total color of galaxies remains the same. These characteristics are expected in a secular evolutionary scenario, and seem incompatible with both the monolithic and the hierarchical scenarios for spiral galaxy formation.Comment: 2 pages, 1 table, no figures.

Cereal production and technology adoption in Ethiopia:

    Get PDF
The Ethiopian government has been promoting a package-driven extension that combines credit, fertilizers, improved seeds, and better management practices. This approach has reached almost all farming communities, representing about 2 percent of agricultural gross domestic product in recent years. This paper is the first to look at the extent and determinants of the adoption of the fertilizer-seed technology package promoted in Ethiopia using nationally representative data from the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia. We estimate a double hurdle model of fertilizer use for four major cereal crops: barley, maize, teff, and wheat. Since maize is the only crop that exhibits considerable adoption of improved seed, we estimate a similar model for the adoption of improved seed in maize production. We find that access to fertilizer and seed is related to access to extension services and that production specialization together with wealth play a major role in explaining crop area under fertilizer and improved seed. One of the most important factors behind the limited adoption of the technological package is the inefficiency in the use of inputs, which implies that changes are needed in the seed and fertilizer systems and in the priorities of the extension service to promote more efficient use of inputs and to accommodate risks associated with agricultural production, especially among small and poor households.Agriculture, cereals, double-hurdle model, maize, Technical change, Technology adoption, teff, Wheat,

Fil: Funes, Ruth. Negotiation Games: Acquiring Skills by Playing

    Get PDF
This paper shows the research done at the School of Industrial Engineers (ETSII) of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), in two consecutive academic courses. In this negotiation game each team is formed by three students playing different roles, with a different degree of complexity. The game is played three different times changing the conditions and doing the Zones of Possible Agreement (ZOPA) smaller so the negotiation is going “harder” and it was more difficult for the team to achieve an agreement. Roles were distributed according to the student’s experience, since it was understood that difficulty of the roles was different, especially when there was set a time limit for negotiation. The combination of playing and training has shown that students without particularly good negotiating skills at the beginning of the experiment attained better final results than those who have natural negotiating skills, but no benefit of training
