Limiting stable currents in bounded electron and ion streams
The classical static analysis of the infinite planar diode has been extended to include the effects of finite transverse beam size. Simple expressions have been found for the increase in maximum stable current density over that of an infinite stream for finite cylindrical and strip streams flowing between plates of infinite diodes. The results are also given in terms of stream perveance. The effect of a nonuniform distribution of current across the stream is shown to be relatively small. Experimental values of maximum stable current agree with those obtained from the analysis. A further extension of the static analysis has been made to include the effects of additional conducting plane boundaries parallel to the stream motion. For length-to-width ratios L/D less than 0.25 the tube is adequately described by the results for the infinite planar diode and for L/D greater than 4, the infinitely-long drift tube theory suffices. At intermediate values of L/D, the maximum amount of current that can be stably passed through the tube is greater than that predicted by either asymptotic theory

A freely relaxing polymer remembers how it was straightened
The relaxation of initially straight semiflexible polymers has been discussed
mainly with respect to the longest relaxation time. The biologically relevant
non-equilibrium dynamics on shorter times is comparatively poorly understood,
partly because "initially straight" can be realized in manifold ways. Combining
Brownian dynamics simulations and systematic theory, we demonstrate how
different experimental preparations give rise to specific short-time and
universal long-time dynamics. We also discuss boundary effects and the onset of

The radio structure of 3C 316, a galaxy with double-peaked narrow optical emission lines
The galaxy 3C\,316 is the brightest in the radio band among the
optically-selected candidates exhibiting double-peaked narrow optical emission
lines. Observations with the Very Large Array (VLA), Multi-Element Remotely
Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN), and the European VLBI Network (EVN)
at 5\,GHz have been used to study the radio structure of the source in order to
determine the nature of the nuclear components and to determine the presence of
radio cores. The e-MERLIN image of 3C 316 reveals a collimated coherent
east-west emission structure with a total extent of about 3 kpc. The EVN image
shows seven discrete compact knots on an S-shaped line. However, none of these
knots could be unambiguously identified as an AGN core. The observations
suggest that the majority of the radio structure belongs to a powerful radio
AGN, whose physical size and radio spectrum classify it as a compact
steep-spectrum source. Given the complex radio structure with radio blobs and
knots, the possibility of a kpc-separation dual AGN cannot be excluded if the
