In the golden age of radio, listeners were told that only The Shadow knows. 1.,amont Cranston, better known as The Shadow, was the enlightened character with all of the answers to solve repeated mysteries. The Shadow is no longer with us, but the use of shadow puppetry in the elementary classroom can help solve mysteries and bring life to the study of light and shadow. Toe use of shadow puppets should allow students to achieve the following objectives: to create shadows by putting objects between a light source and a screen or surface; to recognize objects by their shape; to change the shape and size of shadows by repositioning the objects or the light source; to identify transparent, translucent, and opaque objects
Metformin for weight control in pediatric patients on atypical antipsychotic medication
OBJECTIVE: Metformin was assessed as an interventional medication for weight gain in children and adolescents taking atypical antipsychotic agents.
METHOD: A 12-week open-label trial was conducted to evaluate metformin\u27s effectiveness and safety for weight management. Eleven subjects, ages 10-18 years, participated in the study. Each subject received metformin orally up to 2000 mg/day. Primary outcome measures included weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. Secondary outcome measures included serum glucose, insulin, and fasting lipid profile. Changes in weight, BMI, waist, and metabolic profile were obtained by using repeated measures of covariance.
RESULTS: The mean reduction in weight, waist, BMI, serum glucose, and serum insulin was not statistically significant. However, 5 out of 11 patients lost weight (mean, -2.82 kg +/- 7.25), and overall the sample did not continue to gain weight. There was a significant decrease in triglyceride levels. Metformin was fairly well tolerated.
CONCLUSION: Preliminary data suggests that metformin may safely and effectively improve the triglyceride profile. However, contrary to study hypotheses, weight, waist, and BMI reduction were not statistically significant. Future double-blind studies with larger sample sizes and of longer duration are warranted to assess more fully the safety and efficacy of this intervention
Diet Self-efficacy and Physical Self-concept of College Students at Risk for Eating Disorders
Background: Both eating disorders and body image dissatisfaction affect a high proportion of college students. Self-esteem and self-efficacy may be protective factors for eating disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate diet self-efficacy, the confidence to maintain or lose weight, and its association with physical selfconcept using data from an online survey of health literacy, body image, and eating disorders.
Study Population and Methods: This cross-sectional study collected online survey data from college students within the United States. The inclusion criteria allowed for 1612 college students, ages 17-35 years (597 males, 1015 females) belonging to the following racial/ethnic categories: Black (187); White, non-Hispanic (244), Hispanic (1035), and other (146). Specifically, the study aimed to examine (a) whether and to what degree diet self-efficacy and physical self-concept were associated with risk of eating disorders; (b) the interaction of gender by ethnicity on diet self-efficacy, physical self-concept and risk of eating disorders; and, (c) the relationship of diet self-efficacy with physical self-description and body mass index (BMI) in college students.
Results:Low diet self-efficacy was associated with a lower score on physical self-concept (B = −0.52 [−0.90, −0.15], P = 0.007). Males had a higher physical self-concept as compared to females (B = 14.0 [8.2, 19.8], P
Conclusion: College students in this study who had a poor body image were less confident with diet control. Poorer body image and low diet selfefficacy were associated with higher BMI. These findings suggest lifestyle management interventions may be of value to improve physical self-concept and lower risk of eating disorders for college students

Is type II diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) a surgical disease?
Since February 1, 1980, 515 morbidly obese patients have undergone
the Greenville gastric bypass (GGB) operation. Of these,
212 (41.2%) were euglycemic, 288 (55.9%) were either diabetic
or had glucose intolerance, and 15 (2.9%) were unable to complete
the evaluation. After the operation, only 30 (5.8%) patients remained
diabetic (and 20 of these improved), 457 (88.7%) became
and have remained euglycemic, and inadequate data prevented
classification of the other 28 (5.4%). The patients who failed to
return to normal glucose values were older and their diabetes
was of longer duration than those who did. The effect of the
GGB was not only limited to the correction of abnormal glucose
levels. The GGB also corrected the abnormal levels of fasting
insulin and glycosylated hemoglobin in a cohort of 52 consecutive
severely obese patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes. The
GGB effectively controls weight. If morbid obesity is defined as
100 pounds over ideal body weight, 89% of the patients are no
longer "morbidly" obese within 2 years. In most patients, the
control of the weight has been well maintained during the 11
years of follow-up; most of the upward creep in weight of 20.8%
between 24 and 132 months was from the 49 (9.5%) patients
who had staple line breakdowns between the large and small
gastric pouches. Non-insulin-dependent diabetes, previously
considered a chronic unrelenting disease, can be controlled in
the severely obese by the gastric bypass. Whether the correction
of glucose metabolism affects the complications of diabetes is
unknown. Whether the gastric bypass should be considered for
patients with advanced non-insulin-dependent diabetes but who
are not severely obese deserves consideration. The GGB has an
unacceptably high rate of staple line failure. Accordingly, the
authors have recently changed their procedure to one that divides

The Sorcerer II Global Ocean Sampling Expedition: Northwest Atlantic through Eastern Tropical Pacific
The world's oceans contain a complex mixture of micro-organisms that are for the most part, uncharacterized both genetically and biochemically. We report here a metagenomic study of the marine planktonic microbiota in which surface (mostly marine) water samples were analyzed as part of the Sorcerer II Global Ocean Sampling expedition. These samples, collected across a several-thousand km transect from the North Atlantic through the Panama Canal and ending in the South Pacific yielded an extensive dataset consisting of 7.7 million sequencing reads (6.3 billion bp). Though a few major microbial clades dominate the planktonic marine niche, the dataset contains great diversity with 85% of the assembled sequence and 57% of the unassembled data being unique at a 98% sequence identity cutoff. Using the metadata associated with each sample and sequencing library, we developed new comparative genomic and assembly methods. One comparative genomic method, termed “fragment recruitment,” addressed questions of genome structure, evolution, and taxonomic or phylogenetic diversity, as well as the biochemical diversity of genes and gene families. A second method, termed “extreme assembly,” made possible the assembly and reconstruction of large segments of abundant but clearly nonclonal organisms. Within all abundant populations analyzed, we found extensive intra-ribotype diversity in several forms: (1) extensive sequence variation within orthologous regions throughout a given genome; despite coverage of individual ribotypes approaching 500-fold, most individual sequencing reads are unique; (2) numerous changes in gene content some with direct adaptive implications; and (3) hypervariable genomic islands that are too variable to assemble. The intra-ribotype diversity is organized into genetically isolated populations that have overlapping but independent distributions, implying distinct environmental preference. We present novel methods for measuring the genomic similarity between metagenomic samples and show how they may be grouped into several community types. Specific functional adaptations can be identified both within individual ribotypes and across the entire community, including proteorhodopsin spectral tuning and the presence or absence of the phosphate-binding gene PstS
