A Unified Systolic Array for Adaptive Beamforming
We present a new algorithm and systolic array for adaptive beamforming. Our approach improves on McWhirter\u27s pioneering work in two respects. First, our algorithm uses only orthogonal transformations and this should have better numerical properties. Second, the algorithms can be implemented on one single pxp triangular array of programmable processors that offers a throughput of one residual element per cycle
Differential cross section for neutron-proton bremsstrahlung
The neutron-proton bremsstrahlung process is known to be
sensitive to meson exchange currents in the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The
triply differential cross section for this reaction has been measured for the
first time at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center, using an intense, pulsed
beam of up to 700 MeV neutrons to bombard a liquid hydrogen target. Scattered
neutrons were observed at six angles between 12 and 32, and the
recoil protons were observed in coincidence at 12, 20, and
28 on the opposite side of the beam. Measurement of the neutron and
proton energies at known angles allows full kinematic reconstruction of each
event. The data are compared with predictions of two theoretical calculations,
based on relativistic soft-photon and non-relativistic potential models.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Mesoscopic one-way channels for quantum state transfer via the Quantum Hall Effect
We show that the one-way channel formalism of quantum optics has a physical
realisation in electronic systems. In particular, we show that magnetic edge
states form unidirectional quantum channels capable of coherently transporting
electronic quantum information. Using the equivalence between one-way photonic
channels and magnetic edge states, we adapt a proposal for quantum state
transfer to mesoscopic systems using edge states as a quantum channel, and show
that it is feasible with reasonable experimental parameters. We discuss how
this protocol may be used to transfer information encoded in number, charge or
spin states of quantum dots, so it may prove useful for transferring quantum
information between parts of a solid-state quantum computer.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

Linked CSF reduction of phosphorylated tau and IL-8 in HIV associated neurocognitive disorder.
HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) is a common condition in both developed and developing nations, but its cause is largely unknown. Previous research has inconsistently linked Alzheimer's disease (AD), viral burden, and inflammation to the onset of HAND in HIV-infected individuals. Here we simultaneously measured cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of established amyloid and tau biomarkers for AD, viral copy numbers, and six key cytokines in 41 HIV-infected individuals off combination anti-retroviral therapy (14 with HAND) who underwent detailed clinical and neuropsychological characterization, and compared their CSF patterns with those from young healthy subjects, older healthy subjects with normal cognition, and older people with AD. HAND was associated with the lowest CSF levels of phosphorylated tau (p-Tau181) after accounting for age and race. We also found very high CSF levels of the pro-inflammatory interferon gamma-induced protein 10 (IP-10/CXCL10) in HIV regardless of cognition, but elevated CSF interleukin 8 (IL-8/CXCL8) only in HIV-NC but not HAND. Eleven HIV-infected subjects underwent repeat CSF collection six months later and showed strongly correlated longitudinal changes in p-Tau181 and IL-8 levels (R = 0.841). These data suggest reduced IL-8 relative to IP-10 and reduced p-Tau181 to characterize HAND
Is the incidence of depressive disorders increased following cerebral concussion?
Q: Is the incidence of depressive disorders increased following cerebral concussion? Evidence-based answer: yes, in some populations. Youth and adolescents with self-reported history of concussion had increased risk of depressive disorders (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, based on a prospective cohort study and a retrospective cohort study). Evidence was inconsistent for college athletes. Athletes with ≥ 3 concussions exhibited more depressive disorders, but no association was observed for those with 1 or 2 concussions compared to nonconcussion injuries (SOR: B, based on a cross-sectional study, a small prospective cohort study, and a case-control study). In semiprofessional and professional athletes, evidence was variable and may be sport related. Retired rugby players with a history of concussion showed no increase in depression compared to controls with no concussion history (SOR: B, based on a case-control study). Retired football players with previous concussions displayed increased incidence of depression, especially after ≥ 3 concussions (SOR: B, based on a prospective cohort study and a small case-control study). There is a significant risk of bias in these studies because of their reliance on self-reported concussions, differing definitions of depression, and possible unmeasured confounders in the study designs, making a causative relationship between concussion and depression unclear.Jason W. Electron surface layer at the interface of a plasma and a dielectric wall
We study the potential and the charge distribution across the interface of a
plasma and a dielectric wall. For this purpose, the charge bound to the wall is
modelled as a quasi-stationary electron surface layer which satisfies Poisson's
equation and minimizes the grand canonical potential of the wall-thermalized
excess electrons constituting the wall charge. Based on an effective model for
a graded interface taking into account the image potential and the offset of
the conduction band to the potential just outside the dielectric, we
specifically calculate the potential and the electron distribution for
magnesium oxide, silicon dioxide and sapphire surfaces in contact with a helium
discharge. Depending on the electron affinity of the surface, we find two
vastly different behaviors. For negative electron affinity, electrons do not
penetrate into the wall and an external surface charge is formed in the image
potential, while for positive electron affinity, electrons penetrate into the
wall and a space charge layer develops in the interior of the dielectric. We
also investigate how the electron surface layer merges with the bulk of the

Leader Election in Anonymous Rings: Franklin Goes Probabilistic
We present a probabilistic leader election algorithm for anonymous, bidirectional, asynchronous rings. It is based on an algorithm from Franklin, augmented with random identity selection, hop counters to detect identity clashes, and round numbers modulo 2. As a result, the algorithm is finite-state, so that various model checking techniques can be employed to verify its correctness, that is, eventually a unique leader is elected with probability one. We also sketch a formal correctness proof of the algorithm for rings with arbitrary size
