The Gallerist’s Gambit: Financial Innovation, Tax Law, and the Making of the Contemporary Art Market

This essay presents an account of an important moment in the emergence of the market for Pop art that was facilitated in part by a distinctly accommodating legal environment. Although Abstract Expressionism is commonly credited with causing American art’s ascendance onto the world stage immediately after World War II, its international acclaim belied a precarious institutional and financial infrastructure for living American painters. It was only with the following generation of Pop and Minimalist artists that the United States developed a self-sustaining market for the work of contemporary American artists. A significant but largely overlooked factor in that continued success was the ability of art dealers to take advantage of the unique legal and regulatory environment of the 1960s. This essay focuses on the efforts of an enterprising art gallerist, Leo Castelli, to aggressively promote his stable of Pop artists through the development of several financial structures, including some designed to leverage the relatively generous income tax deductions and anemic enforcement regime of the time. In doing so, Castelli not only seeded the ground for the international ascendance of American visual art, but also engineered financial arrangements that fostered the development of a lucrative and resilient art market that endures to this day

A Qualitative Assessment of Military Kids: Instabilities & Constants

In the present study, we addressed the following research question: Do college-aged military kids report similar patterns in affect, behavior, and cognition due to shared perceptions and experiences? The study was conducted through semi-structured qualitative research interviews on a selective, Midwest, private college campus. Participants were asked questions regarding their upbringing as a military child and were asked to identify any potential connections between their past experiences and their current beliefs and behaviors. We report qualitative findings relating to themes in the areas of family dynamics, adaptability, and lifestyles

Social Psychology of Public Defenders: A Qualitative Study

The right to an attorney is a one to which all U.S. citizens are entitled, in conjunction with the constitution\u27s sixth amendment. Difficulty arose when people who were unable to provide necessary funds to hire a lawyer and, subsequently, went into trial pro se. Resolution was met with the creation of the public defense system -- a system which is unfortunately understudied, and sometimes regarded in a negative light, including a negative perception that public defense is a broken system. This belief sometimes bleeds into the minds of potential clients who may believe a public defender is not sufficiently competent to represent them. The present qualitative research study reports the perspectives of public defenders, from their own vantage points and perspectives. We interviewed 22 public defenders (Male = 13, Female = 9) from three counties in Southwest Ohio. The public defenders reflected on their respective viewpoints, from when they first started in this career path, with their current perspectives. In our initial findings, motivations for becoming a public defender seem to fall under one of three categories: a desire for justice and a strong belief in the Constitution, a desire to help people who are less fortunate, or a desire for a steady paycheck. While many positives came forth through in the interviews, struggles of the career of a public defender also seemed to appear. These include low pay and a small budget for cases, a lack of time for each case because of a heavy caseload, and the perception of incompetence and indifference that their clients come in with

External Dynamics Influencing Tattooing Among College Students: A Qualitative Analysis

The study utilized qualitative research methodology to assess external dynamics and their influences on tattooing practices among college students. Twenty-four undergraduates supplied in-depth interviews regarding the external variables related to college students\u27 decisions to tattoo. The present research follows (Tse, Firmin, Angelini, & Foster, 2006), which reported findings regarding college students\u27 internal dynamics for tattoo choices. Present findings suggest that health concerns, parental and peer influences, and social stigmas are particularly cogent external influencers in college students\u27 decisions to tattoo
