Viability of brown trout embryos positively linked to melanin-based but negatively to carotenoid-based colours of their fathers
‘Good-genes’ models of sexual selection predict significant additive genetic variation for fitness-correlated traits within populations to be revealed by phenotypic traits. To test this prediction, we sampled brown trout (Salmo trutta) from their natural spawning place, analysed their carotenoid-based red and melanin-based dark skin colours and tested whether these colours can be used to predict offspring viability. We produced half-sib families by in vitro fertilization, reared the resulting embryos under standardized conditions, released the hatchlings into a streamlet and identified the surviving juveniles 20 months later with microsatellite markers. Embryo viability was revealed by the sires' dark pigmentation: darker males sired more viable offspring. However, the sires' red coloration correlated negatively with embryo survival. Our study demonstrates that genetic variation for fitness-correlated traits is revealed by male colour traits in our study population, but contrary to predictions from other studies, intense red colours do not signal good genes
Microstructure of GaN Grown on (111) Si by MOCVD
Gallium nitride was grown on (111) Si by MOCVD by depositing an AIN buffer at 108O"C and then GaN at 1060 {degrees}C. The 2.2pm layer cracked along {1-100} planes upon cooling to room temperature, but remained adherent. We were able to examine the microstructure of material between cracks with TEM. The character and arrangement of dislocation are much like those of GaN grown on Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}: -2/3 pure edge and - 1/3 mixed (edge + screw), arranged in boundaries around domains of GaN that are slightly disoriented with respect to neighboring material. The 30 nm AIN buffer is continuous, indicating that AIN wets the Si, in contrast to GaN on Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}
Insulating and Conducting Phases of RbC60
Optical measurements were performed on thin films of RbC,
identified by X-ray diffraction as mostly material. The samples were
subjected to various heat treatments, including quenching and slow cooling from
400K. The dramatic increase in the transmission of the quenched samples, and
the relaxation towards the transmission observed in slow cooled samples
provides direct evidence for the existence of a metastable insulating phase.
Slow cooling results in a phase transition between two electrically conducting
phases.Comment: Minor revisions. Submitted to PRB, RevTeX 3.0 file, 2 postscript

Normal-state conductivity in underdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 thin films: Search for nonlinear effects related to collective stripe motion
We report a detailed study of the electric-field dependence of the
normal-state conductivity in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 thin films for two
concentrations of doped holes, x=0.01 and 0.06, where formation of diagonal and
vertical charged stripes was recently suggested. In order to elucidate whether
high electric fields are capable of depinning the charged stripes and inducing
their collective motion, we have measured current-voltage characteristics for
various orientations of the electric field with respect to the crystallographic
axes. However, even for the highest possible fields (~1000 V/cm for x=0.01 and
\~300 V/cm for x=0.06) we observed no non-linear-conductivity features except
for those related to the conventional Joule heating of the films. Our analysis
indicates that Joule heating, rather than collective electron motion, may also
be responsible for the non-linear conductivity observed in some other 2D
transition-metal oxides as well. We discuss that a possible reason why moderate
electric fields fail to induce a collective stripe motion in layered oxides is
that fairly flexible and compressible charged stripes can adjust themselves to
the crystal lattice and individual impurities, which makes their pinning much
stronger than in the case of conventional rigid charge-density waves.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Soft, collinear and non-relativistic modes in radiative decays of very heavy quarkonium
We analyze the end-point region of the photon spectrum in semi-inclusive
radiative decays of very heavy quarkonium (m alpha_s^2 >> Lambda_QCD). We
discuss the interplay of the scales arising in the Soft-Collinear Effective
Theory, m, m(1-z)^{1/2} and m(1-z) for z close to 1, with the scales of heavy
quarkonium systems in the weak coupling regime, m, m alpha_s and m alpha_s^2.
For 1-z \sim alpha_s^2 only collinear and (ultra)soft modes are seen to be
relevant, but the recently discovered soft-collinear modes show up for 1-z <<
alpha_s^2. The S- and P-wave octet shape functions are calculated. When they
are included in the analysis of the photon spectrum of the Upsilon (1S) system,
the agreement with data in the end-point region becomes excellent. The NRQCD
matrix elements and
are also obtained.Comment: Revtex, 11 pages, 6 figures. Minor improvements and references added.

Popular attitudes to memory, the body, and social identity : the rise of external commemoration in Britain, Ireland, and New England
A comparative analysis of samples of external memorials from burial grounds in Britain, Ireland and New England reveals a widespread pattern of change in monument style and content, and exponential growth in the number of permanent memorials from the 18th century onwards. Although manifested in regionally distinctive styles on which most academic attention has so far been directed, the expansion reflects global changes in social relationships and concepts of memory and the body. An archaeological perspective reveals the importance of external memorials in articulating these changing attitudes in a world of increasing material consumption
Electron-phonon interaction in C70
The matrix elements of the deformation potential of C are calculated
by means of a simple, yet accurate solution of the electron-phonon coupling
problem in fullerenes, based on a parametrization of the ground state
electronic density of the system in terms of hybridized orbitals.
The value of the calculated dimensionless total electron-phonon coupling
constant is , an order of magnitude smaller than in
C, consistent with the lack of a superconducting phase transition in
CA fullerite, and in overall agreement with measurements of the
broadening of Raman peaks in CK. We also calculate the photoemission
cross section of C, which is found to display less structure than that
associated with C, in overall agreement with the experimental
findings.Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev.
Heat release by controlled continuous-time Markov jump processes
We derive the equations governing the protocols minimizing the heat released
by a continuous-time Markov jump process on a one-dimensional countable state
space during a transition between assigned initial and final probability
distributions in a finite time horizon. In particular, we identify the
hypotheses on the transition rates under which the optimal control strategy and
the probability distribution of the Markov jump problem obey a system of
differential equations of Hamilton-Bellman-Jacobi-type. As the state-space mesh
tends to zero, these equations converge to those satisfied by the diffusion
process minimizing the heat released in the Langevin formulation of the same
problem. We also show that in full analogy with the continuum case, heat
minimization is equivalent to entropy production minimization. Thus, our
results may be interpreted as a refined version of the second law of
thermodynamics.Comment: final version, section 2.1 revised, 26 pages, 3 figure
