assumed. However, the public setting will invoke feelings
of shyness and a desire to control the personal exposure
associated with interactions. In this paper we discuss
these issues and our initial tests of a system which affords
a control beyond "engage or don't engage"
Using popular culture to enable health service co-design with young people
This paper reports on participatory service design with young people with type 1 diabetes â a long-term condition that can impact their emotional wellbeing and where poor self-care often leads to negative health consequences. The paper describes a project working with young people with type 1 diabetes to design innovative health services. The project consisted of eight creative workshops, in which we used popular cultural references as a means to create enjoyable activities and encourage the young people to engage with design. These cultural references can be understood as creating design language games that allowed the young people to understand and participate in the activities required at each stage of the design process. However, not all popular culture references worked equally well and this paper explores the reasons for this
New York and Vermont Corn Silage Hybrid Trials
The corn silage hybrid evaluation program expanded to 77 hybrids in 2018. Hybrid evaluation at multiple environments helps in decision making and expands the reach of this type of data to more farmers. With this in mind Cornell, UVM, and seed companies collaborate to bring this robust evaluation. This year, hybrids were either entered into the 80-95 day relative maturity (RM) group (Early-Mid) and were tested at two locations in NY (n = 20; Hu-Lane Farm in Albion and the Willsboro Research Farm in Willsboro) and one location in VT (n = 20; Borderview Farm in Alburgh) or were entered into the 96-110 day relative maturity group (Mid-Late) and were tested at two locations in NY (n = 57; Greenwood Farms in Madrid and the Musgrave Research Farm in Aurora) and one location in VT (n = 55; Borderview Farm in Alburgh). The average Growing Degree Days (GDD; 86-50°F system) from May through August for years 2005 to 2018 is 2053 GGD at Albion, 2039 at Willsboro, 1979 at Alburgh, 2078 at Aurora and 1953 at Madrid (Table 1a and 1b)
Liberal market economies, business, and political finance: Britain under New Labour
The extent and nature of business financing of parties is an important feature of political finance. Britainâs transparent and permissive regulatory system provides an excellent opportunity to study business financing of parties. Business donations have been very important to the Conservative party over the last decade, and of only marginal importance to Labour. Unlike other Conservative contributors, business donors are more likely to contribute when the party is popular. In contrast to the previous period of Conservative government, the biggest British businesses tended to abstain from political finance under New Labour. However, their bias towards the Conservatives is affected by the partyâs popularity and the closeness of an election. Britain shares the political importance of business financing of parties and its mixture of ideological and pragmatic motivations with other liberal market economies. However, in Britain the bias towards the right is much stronger and the role of big business more marginal
Extensible Component Based Architecture for FLASH, A Massively Parallel, Multiphysics Simulation Code
FLASH is a publicly available high performance application code which has
evolved into a modular, extensible software system from a collection of
unconnected legacy codes. FLASH has been successful because its capabilities
have been driven by the needs of scientific applications, without compromising
maintainability, performance, and usability. In its newest incarnation, FLASH3
consists of inter-operable modules that can be combined to generate different
applications. The FLASH architecture allows arbitrarily many alternative
implementations of its components to co-exist and interchange with each other,
resulting in greater flexibility. Further, a simple and elegant mechanism
exists for customization of code functionality without the need to modify the
core implementation of the source. A built-in unit test framework providing
verifiability, combined with a rigorous software maintenance process, allow the
code to operate simultaneously in the dual mode of production and development.
In this paper we describe the FLASH3 architecture, with emphasis on solutions
to the more challenging conflicts arising from solver complexity, portable
performance requirements, and legacy codes. We also include results from user
