Determinants of organizational form: Transaction costs and institutions in the European trucking industry
We explain why European trucking carriers are much smaller and rely more heavily on owner-operators (as opposed to employee drivers) than their US counterparts. Our analysis begins by ruling out differences in technology as the source of those disparities and confirms that standard hypotheses in organizational economics, which have been shown to explain the choice of organizational form in US industry, also apply in Europe. We then argue that the preference for subcontracting over vertical integration in Europe is the result of European institutions—particularly, labor regulation and tax laws—that increase the costs of vertical integration.Transaction costs, governance, hybrids, transportation
Quasi-integration in less-than-truckload trucking
This work studies the organization of less-than-truckload trucking from a contractual point of view. We show that the huge number of owner-operators working in the industry hides a much less fragmented reality. Most of those owner-operators are “quasi-integrated” in higher organizational structures. This hybrid form is generally more efficient than vertical integration because, in the Spanish institutional environment, it lessens serious moral hazard problems, related mainly to the use of the vehicles, and makes it possible to reach economies of scale and density. Empirical evidence suggests that what leads organizations to vertically integrate is not the presence of such economies but hold-up problems, related to the existence of specific assets. Finally, an international comparison hints that institutional constraints are able to explain differences in the evolution of vertical integration across countries.Hold-up, hybrids, institutions, moral hazard, vertical integration, trucking industry
cartas, planos y proyectos. This historical of the Feria market, the oldest in Seville, is located at the current
Calderón de la Barca Square. Although its commercial nature goes back to the
13th century, it did not become a building devoted to this purpose until the 19th
century, with the new ideas about hygiene and urbanism which went against
the existence of outdoor markets. This study tackles its long constructive history,
in the light of the unpublished documents kept in the Municipal Historical Archives:
files, technical reports, letters, plans and projects
The former school of San Buenaventura in Seville: new graphic documents
Para completar el estudio del colegio franciscano, se ha recuperado una descripción anónima de 1687.Built in the first decades of the 17th century, the San Buenaventura Convent-School was an important architectural ensemble in the historic centre of Seville, which was demolished, almost entirely, in the mid- 19th century due to roadwork carried out in the area around the present Plaza Nueva. In this article, the result of research carried out in the General Military Archive of Madrid, the author analyses and divulges the floor plan and section of the building. These graphic documents, drawn by the academic architect Juan Manuel Caballero in 1847, are extremely interesting because they reproduce the exact organization of the architecture of this Franciscan school. To complete this study, an anonymous 1687 description of the building has been recovered.

The Monastery of Saint Augustine was once one of the most monumental buildings in Seville. Today only the remains of this 13th-century structure exist –declared a Historic and Artistic Site in 1964–, and the distribution of the plan remained unknown until now. This article presents and analyses a plan drawn up in 1835 by the engineer Benito León y Canales, which visually documents the exact architectural divisions of the building. New data and other graphic documents are also considered.<br><br>El monasterio de San Agustín era uno de los más monumentales de Sevilla. Visual Localisation of Mobile Devices in an Indoor Environment under Network Delay Conditions
Current progresses in home automation and service robotic environment have
highlighted the need to develop interoperability mechanisms that allow a
standard communication between the two systems. During the development of the
DHCompliant protocol, the problem of locating mobile devices in an indoor
environment has been investigated. The communication of the device with the
location service has been carried out to study the time delay that web services
offer in front of the sockets. The importance of obtaining data from real-time
location systems portends that a basic tool for interoperability, such as web
services, can be ineffective in this scenario because of the delays added in
the invocation of services. This paper is focused on introducing a web service
to resolve a coordinates request without any significant delay in comparison
with the sockets
This paper explores the motivation of pre-service teachers to choose a language
itinerary (English or Asturian) in the Degree of Primary Education. The objective is
to identify which elements drive students to select among the so-called menciones (tracks)
to become language teachers; the study examines if pre-service teachers specializing in the
international or the regional language report intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. A survey was
answered by 89 students in their 3rd year of Primary Education. Variance analyses confirm
the intrinsic motivation of students; no significant differences were found between future
teachers of English/Asturian, although some variables render significant results.
This work is part of two research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy

This paper analyses teacher satisfaction in the case of lecturers engaged in the
so-called “bilingual programmes” at the University of Oviedo, an institution which offers
subjects taught entirely in English in several study plans. The research relies on quantitative
and descriptive methodology covering 74 lecturers (almost the entire population being
studied) and establishes the strengths and weaknesses of this approach based on their experiences
teaching through the medium of English. The conclusions of the study provide lines
of optimization and propose improvements for the implementation of bilingual programmes
in similar contexts.
This study has been supported by the research project EDU2009-08669EDUC, financed by the Spanish
