Chronic hyperplastic pulpitis (pulp polyps) usually occurs in molar teeth of children and young adults and is characterized by an overgrowth of granulomatous tissue into the carious cavity. Here, we report a rare type of pulp polyp in lower third molar of a 27-year-old woman that not only grow into carious cavity but also extruded in very large size that interfered with occluding of the teeth

University Students’ Point of View about Clinical Evaluation Using Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), Kerman School of Dentistry

Background & Objective : Clinical evaluation of medical students using OSCE has been introduced as an efficient way. Nowadays, this method is applied in some departments of Kerman School of Dentistry for clinical evaluation. This research was conducted to assess the university students’ point of view about clinical evaluation using OSCE in Kerman University of Medical Sciences to inform educational authorities about present problems together with evaluating students’ opinions. Methods : In this cross sectional study, 89 dentistry students answered a questionnaire including 12 multiple choice questions and two open ended questions. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were already confirmed. Results : According to the results of this study, most of the students (78.6%) declared that holding practical final exams and clinical evaluation in the form of OSCE increased their stress. Only 34.8% gave a positive reply to the question concerning whether OSCE is a useful clinical evaluation method. 20.2 percent agreed with continuing OSCE and 61.3% were against it. Conclusion : An increase in students’ stress could affect their disagreement with evaluation using OSCE. Unlike students’ negative approach towards efficacy of holding OSCE and considering its global satisfactory results, useful steps should be taken to improve OSCE and attract students’ satisfaction, after solving pitfalls and making improvements. Further studies are suggested to assess the efficacy of these actions. Keywords: Clinical evaluation, Dentistry student, OSCE, Point of view

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Nasal fracture is one of the most common facial fractures and the main goal of this study was evaluation of closed reduction surgery of nasal bone fractures. METHODS: Thirty six patients including 24 male and 12 female patients suffered from nasal bone fractures were treated by closed reduction method. Preoperative and postoperative computed tomographic scans were analyzed by an expert panel. Statistical methods including chi-square, Fisher's exact test and regression were used to evaluate the relationship between age, sex and type of trauma and to evaluate the efficacy of closed reduction technique. RESULTS: Type of trauma, age and sex had not any effect on closed reduction efficacy. We had 36.1% complete success rate (nearly complete anatomic reduction), 36.1% favorable success rate (acceptable non-anatomic reduction) and 27.8% absolute failure (no acceptable reduction) after treatment of nasal bone fractures by closed reduction method. CONCLUSION: Closed nasal reduction is the most commonly used technique for a fractured nose, but it has high degree of failure of treatment, so when choosing the closed reduction method for treatment of nasal bone fractures, appropriate radiography must be taken for meticulous evaluation to reducing the complications. Aspergillosis in a Child with Acute Myeloid Leukemia: Complications, and Treatment

Microbial infection is common in patients with leukemia. However, aspergillosis is a rare complication of oral region. Attention to early diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment can reduce the wide range of complications of the infection in these patients. This article reports 4-year history of a child with leukemia, who suffered from a rare aspergillosis infection in the palatal region of oral cavity during chemotherapy. Early diagnosis and treatment of bacterial and fungal infections, especially rare types such as aspergillosis, in patients with leukemia is important for reducing widespread complications. However, prosthetic treatment and attention to psychological complications of orofacial defects would also improve their quality of life significantly. These improvements can be seen more clearly in children

The Pediatric Cell Atlas:Defining the Growth Phase of Human Development at Single-Cell Resolution

    Get PDF
Single-cell gene expression analyses of mammalian tissues have uncovered profound stage-specific molecular regulatory phenomena that have changed the understanding of unique cell types and signaling pathways critical for lineage determination, morphogenesis, and growth. We discuss here the case for a Pediatric Cell Atlas as part of the Human Cell Atlas consortium to provide single-cell profiles and spatial characterization of gene expression across human tissues and organs. Such data will complement adult and developmentally focused HCA projects to provide a rich cytogenomic framework for understanding not only pediatric health and disease but also environmental and genetic impacts across the human lifespan

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Consanguineous marriage is one of the causes of congenital deformities and genetic diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of consanguineous marriage in dentoalveolar deformities in 16-18 years old adolescents with parental consanguineous marriages in Kerman, Iran. METHODS: A total of 388 female and male adolescents participated in this study. The subjects were divided into two groups of case and control (with consanguineous marriages and non-consanguineous Marriages respectively) and examined carefully and a special questionnaire was completed for each group, then data were analyzed by SPSS using multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Showed that Class III malocclusion in girls and boys was significantly more prevalent in consanguineous marriages (P 0.050). CONCLUSION: When parents have Class III malocclusion, consanguineous marriage can play a major role as a predisposing factor for Class III malocclusion in their children.
