Nancy Drew: A Feminist Icon or a Problematic Figure of the Patriarchy and White Privilege

    Get PDF
In the detective fiction genre, Nancy Drew is one of its most iconic sleuths, and is so cleverly named the “girl detective.” Originally created in 1930, Nancy Drew serves as an inspirational figure for young girls and women across generations, as her intelligence and resourcefulness allowed her to challenge traditional gender roles for women as well as solve complicated mysteries. With the rise of the women’s rights movement and in the 1960s, many aspired to attain Nancy Drew’s independence and subvert the patriarchy, breaking the glass ceiling that held them down in the role of the submissive housewife. The second wave feminist perspective, however, was that all women experience sexism in the same ways, falsely equating the middle-class white women’s experience to that of minorities and the working class. Despite being labeled a feminist icon, role model, and having the series adapted into comic books, movies, and television shows, the original Nancy Drew exhibits character flaws that make her controversial. “Nancy Drew: A Feminist Icon or a Problematic Figure of the Patriarchy and White Privilege” critiques why Nancy Drew is considered a feminist, and examines how unacknowledged elements of racism, classism, and traditional notions of femininity are problematic and prevent her from being a fully feminist character. This type of character analysis focusing on diversity is key to the ongoing discussion on campus and abroad about inclusion and gender in literature, media, and television

Online recommender systems are useful for media asset management where they select the best content from a set of media assets. We have developed an architecture for 360-MAM- Select, a recommender system for educational video content. 360-MAM-Select will utilise sentiment analysis and gamification techniques for the recommendation of media assets. 360-MAM-Select will increase user participation with digital content through improved video recommendations. Here, we discuss the architecture of 360-MAM-Select and the use of the Google Prediction API and EmoSenticNet for 360-MAM-Affect, 360-MAM-Select's sentiment analysis module. Results from testing two models for sentiment analysis, Sentiment Classifier (Google Prediction API) and EmoSenticNetClassifer (Google Prediction API + EmoSenticNet) are promising. Future work includes the implementation and testing of 360-MAM-Select on video data from YouTube EDU and Head Squeeze

PENGARUH BRACING PADA BANGUNAN BERTINGKAT RANGKA BAJA YANG BERDIRI DI ATAS TANAH MIRING TERHADAP GEMPA

    Get PDF

Space Science and Microsatellites - A Case Study Observations of the Near-Earth Radiation Environment using the Cosmic-Ray Effects and Dosimetry (CREDO) Payload On-Board UoSAT-3

The University of Surrey\u27s technology demonstration microsatellite: UoSAT-3 launched in January 1990. carries on-board a Cosmic-Ray Effects and Dosimetry (CREDO) payload for characterizing the low-Earth orbit (LEO) radiation environment. Measurements made with this payload are correlated with radiation effects observed in the spacecraft\u27s microelectronics, in particular, the occurrence of single event upsets (SEUs) in solid-state memory devices. The CREDO payload consists of two Sub-systems, the Cosmic Particle Experiment (CPE) and the Total-Dose Experiment (TDE). The CPE houses an array of large-area PIN diode detectors, connected to a pulse-height analysis network. Particles incident on the detector are counted and logged according to their linear-energy transfer (LET). Results are integrated over five minute intervals and the data are stored in the PACSAT Communications Experiment (PCE) memory. The TDE consists of specially manufactured p-channel MOSFETs which are monitored for changes in threshold voltage due to accumulated radiation dose. During the first year\u27s operation, CREDO has provided measurements of the cosmic-ray background, the trapped particle population of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), and has observed a number of large solar proton events - most recently, the major events of June 1991. This paper reviews the results obtained so far and comments on the suitability of microsatellites for this kind of small-scale space science mission

Abundance analysis of a nitrogen-rich extreme-helium hot subdwarf from the SALT survey

We have performed a detailed spectral analysis of the helium-rich hot subdwarf EC 20187-4939 using data obtained in the SALT survey of helium-rich hot subdwarfs. We have measured its effective temperature, surface gravity and chemical abundances from the spectrum. Its radius has also been determined by fitting the spectral energy distribution using photometric data, from which a mass of 0.44 Msun has been inferred using the measurement of surface gravity. This star is particularly abundant in helium and nitrogen, whilst being both carbon and oxygen-weak. The surface abundances and mass have been found to be consistent with a helium white dwarf merger product. The abundance effects of alpha captures on nitrogen during the merger process and possible connections between EC 20187-4939 and other carbon-weak related objects are discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRA

Duration of Periconceptual Folic Acid Supplementation in Women Booking for Antenatal Care

Objective: To provide accurate estimates of the commencement time, duration and dosage of folic acid (FA) supplementation taken by Irish women in the periconceptional period. The study also aimed to establish the factors associated with optimal FA supplementation practices. Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Women’s clinical and sociodemographic details were computerised. Maternal weight and height were measured before calculating BMI. Detailed FA supplementation questionnaires were completed under the supervision of a trained researcher. Setting: A large university maternity hospital, Republic of Ireland, January 2014–April 2016. Subjects: Women (n 856) recruited at their convenience in the first trimester. Results: While almost all of the women (97 %) were taking FA at enrolment, only one in four women took FA for at least 12 weeks preconceptionally (n 208). Among the 44% of women who were supplementing with FA preconceptionally, 44% (162/370) reported taking FA for less than the 12 weeks required to achieve optimal red-blood-cell folate levels for prevention of neural tube defects. On multivariate analysis, only planned pregnancy and nulliparity were associated with taking FA for at least 12 weeks preconceptionally. Among women who only took FA postconceptionally, almost two-thirds commenced it after day 28 of their pregnancy when the neural tube had already closed. Conclusions: As the timing of FA was suboptimal both before and after conception, we recommend that current national FA guidelines need to be reviewed

Post-Dieselgate : Evidence of NOx Emission Reductions Using On-Road Remote Sensing

    Get PDF
The Dieselgate scandal which broke in September 2015 demonstrated that vehicle manufacturers, such as the Volkswagen Group (VWG), engaged in software-based manipulation which led to vehicles passing laboratory-based emission testing limits but were far more polluting while being driven on roads. Using 23 000 on-road remote sensing measurements of light-duty Euro 5 diesel vehicles in the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2018, VWG vehicles with the "Dieselgate-affected" EA189 engine demonstrated anomalous NOx emission behavior between the pre- and post-Dieselgate periods which was not observed in other vehicle makes or models. These anomalous changes can be explained by voluntary VWG hardware and software fixes which have led to improved NOx emission control. The VGW 1.6 L vehicles, with a simple hardware fix and a software upgrade, resulted in a 36% reduction in NOx, whereas the 2.0 L vehicles that required a software-only fix showed a 30% reduction in NOx once controlled for ambient temperature effects. These results show that even minor changes or upgrades can considerably reduce NOx emissions, which has implications for future emission control activities and local air quality

Determining the Hubble Constant without the Sound Horizon: A 3.6%3.6\% Constraint on H0H_0 from Galaxy Surveys, CMB Lensing and Supernovae

Many theoretical resolutions to the so-called "Hubble tension" rely on modifying the sound horizon at recombination, rsr_s, and thus the acoustic scale used as a standard ruler in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large scale structure (LSS) datasets. As shown in a number of recent works, these observables can also be used to compute rsr_s-independent constraints on H0H_0 by making use of the horizon scale at matter-radiation equality, keqk_{\rm eq}, which has different sensitivity to high redshift physics than rsr_s. In this work, we present the tightest keqk_{\rm eq}-based constraints on the expansion rate from current data, finding H0=64.82.5+2.2H_0=64.8^{+2.2}_{-2.5} at 68%\% CL from a combination of BOSS galaxy power spectra, Planck CMB lensing, and the newly released Pantheon+ supernova constraints, as well as physical priors on the baryon density, neutrino mass, and spectral index (in kms1Mpc1\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1} units). The BOSS and Planck measurements have different degeneracy directions, leading to the improved combined constraints, with a bound of H0=67.12.9+2.5H_0 = 67.1^{+2.5}_{-2.9} (63.63.6+2.963.6^{+2.9}_{-3.6}) from BOSS (Planck) alone. The results show some dependence on the neutrino mass bounds, with the constraint broadening to H0=68.03.2+2.9H_0 = 68.0^{+2.9}_{-3.2} if we instead impose a weak prior on mν\sum m_\nu from terrestrial experiments rather than assuming mν<0.26eV\sum m_\nu<0.26\,\mathrm{eV}, or shifting to H0=64.6±2.4H_0 = 64.6\pm2.4 if the neutrino mass is fixed to its minimal value. Even without any dependence on the sound horizon, our results are in 3σ\approx 3\sigma tension with those obtained from the Cepheid-calibrated distance ladder, providing evidence against new physics models that vary H0H_0 by changing acoustic physics or the expansion history immediately prior to recombination.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.
