Self-presentation in Japanese conversation: Self-assertiveness and Repair

Harmony is a core cultural value inherent to East Asian Cultures. Generally, East Asian Cultures strive to maintain harmony in every verbal behavior. It is assumed that Japanese desire to \u27be the same as others\u27 is a priority in everyday life. In previous studies, use of self-referential terms is more often observed when a speaker mentions his or her negative self-impressions and experiences. Speakers use self-referential terms as a way of portraying a humble attitude within social contexts. Thus, it is concluded that self-referential terms are more acceptable when speakers express themselves in a physically or mentally lower position. However, people have wants to be approved of. Generally, to praise oneself in conversation is not considered to be an acceptable practice in Japan, even though people may privately wish for approval. Therefore when the speakers would like to mention their superior situation, they incline to use different people\u27s view. If speakers unintentionally praise themselves, it is found that they repair their utterances during the course of the conversation. Of additional importance, comprehension of a strategy used by speakers and referred to as repairing offers the key to an understanding of the negative societal view of self-assertiveness

This is one of the series of research for address terms which I have worked on. The aim of this tentative analysis is to compare the use of address terms in Japanese and in English regarding their function for conversational management. Address terms has been a popular topic among sociolinguists. The address terms serves to regulate the turn-taking of the participants. We have seen the employment of address terms and compared their functions in conversation in English and Japanese. We have found that in both language, address terms work likewise. It is found that the frequency of address terms are influenced by the turn-taking system of the language. Talking as possible as one can is important for participants in English conversation. They try to hold the floor and try to take their turn. Consequently, conflict is a common phenomenon. In order to regulate such competition, address terms function. On the contrary, Japanese conversations are designed according to the participants\u27 social factor. According to his or her role and position, the participants control how to participate in the conversation by themselves

Detection of duplicated regions in digital images has been a highly investigated field in recent years since the editing of digital images has been notably simplified by the development of advanced image processing tools. In this paper, we present a new method that combines Cellular Automata (CA) and Local Binary Patterns (LBP) to extract feature vectors for the purpose of detection of duplicated regions. The combination of CA and LBP allows a simple and reduced description of texture in the form of CA rules that represents local changes in pixel luminance values. The importance of CA lies in the fact that a very simple set of rules can be used to describe complex textures, while LBP, applied locally, allows efficient binary representation. CA rules are formed on a circular neighborhood, resulting in insensitivity to rotation of duplicated regions. Additionally, a new search method is applied to select the nearest neighbors and determine duplicated blocks. In comparison with similar methods, the proposed method showed good performance in the case of plain/multiple copy-move forgeries and rotation/scaling of duplicated regions, as well as robustness to post-processing methods such as blurring, addition of noise and JPEG compression. An important advantage of the proposed method is its low computational complexity and simplicity of its feature vector representation

The fading reaction mechanisms of chromogenic magenta dyes with thiosulfate in the ethano-water system were elucidated by using 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-az-(p-diethylamino-phenyl)-2-pyrazoline-4,5-dione. The dye was confirmed to be faded in the variety of reaction schemes ; reductive fading to form a leuco dye, reductive decomposition of the leuco dye, and adduct formation with bisulfite ions which were produced by decomposition of hypo. The leuco dye formation and its protonation were especially elucidated by means of polarography

Urea (CO(NH_2)_2) was added in the system of phosphoric acid (H_3PO_4) and cerium carbonate (Ce_2(CO_3)_3・8H_2O), and the system of phosphoric acid and cerium oxide (CeO_2). The thermal behaviors of these dried mixtures were estimated by differential thermal analyses, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier - transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, specific surface area of phosphates was calculated by BET method using nitrogen adsorption. In P/Ce = 1/1, the addition of urea made specific surface area of cerium orthophosphate larger. The formation of tetra-valent cerium phosphates was suppressed by the addition of urea
