Protective effect of chitosan treatment against acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity
Acetaminophen (APAP) is the most commonly reported toxic ingestion in the world.
Severe liver injury resulting from overdose or chronic use of APAP remains a significant clinical
problem. In recent years, the mechanisms underlying liver injury caused by APAP have become
much better understood. We have studied the protective effect of chitosan supplementation
against APAP-induced hepatotoxicity with respect to changes in the levels of total and lipidbound sialic acid in the serum and in the liver tissue and changes in the activity of diagnostic
marker enzymes, lipid peroxidation, and ceruloplasmin oxidase enzyme in normal and experimental groups of rats. During the experimental period, chitosan (200 mg/kg body weight per
day) was administered to APAP þ chitosan-treated rats by oral gavage. Results showed that
treatment with APAP induced a significant increase in the serum alanine aminotransferase
and alkaline phosphatase activities, in total and lipid-bound sialic acids levels, and in the liver
lipid peroxide content. The administration of chitosan significantly prevented APAP-induced
alterations in the levels of diagnostic marker enzymes, total sialic acid, lipid-bound sialic acid,
and malondialdehyde in the experimental groups of rats. Furthermore, chitosan administration
increased the activity of ceruloplasmin oxidase. In conclusion, our results suggest that chitosan
has a protective effect on APAP-induced hepatic injury in rats. The study sheds light on the
therapeutic potential of chitosan in an APAP-induced hepatotoxicity model
An investigation on the effect of enneagram types on organisational dissent
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Enneagram personality types on organisational dissent strategies. A convenience sampling was used and 509 Turkish participants completed the online survey questionnaire. Basic Linear Regression Analysis using SPSS 24.0 was used to analyse the data. The results show that “the Peacemaker” and “the Helper” have a negative effect on organisational dissent. On the other hand, “the Adventurer” and “the Skeptic” personality types have a positive effect on organisational dissent. For articulated dissent, the Peacemaker” and “the Helper” both have a negative effect whereas “the Adventurer” type has a high positive effect. Lastly “the Observer” and “the Skeptic” have a positive effect on latent dissent. Considering these results, it can be said that extraverted and fearless employees use articulated dissent more. In addition, latent dissent is used more by employees who have
commitment to the job and who like to keep quiet and focus on the task at hand rather than to create an unexpected result. Overall, the results support the association between certain Enneagram personality types and employee dissent. Organisations might use the findings to create a more open and democratic organisational climate that supports the expression of different ideas and thoughts in order to achieve greater success in the employees’ personal targets and organisational targets. Organisational leaders may apply the study outcomes regarding the role of employee personality to create an objective employee selection process in order to find and assign the right person to the right job
Perforated mixed carcinoid-adenocarcinoma in transverse colon and at gastroenterostomy site: case report
Goblet cell carcinoid of the large intestine is a rare neoplasm, usually located in ascending colon and rectum. A 60-year-old male patient underwent surgery after the diagnosis of acute abdomen. Exploratory laparotomy revealed perforation with a diameter of 1 cm at the site of the previously performed gastroenterostomy and dilatation of the right colic flexure, secondary to a solid obstructive mass located in the mid-portion of transverse colon. Histopathological investigation of the biopsies, taken from the gastroenterostomy site and the tumor, revealed mixed carcinoid-adenocarcinoma with carcinoid component, predominantly composed of goblet cells. Three cycles of FOLFOX-4 protocol was administered. Following respiratory distress secondary to pulmonary metastasis, the patient's condition deteriorated and subsequently died in the fourth postoperative month. Our aim with this paper is to point out that more cases should be reported for more effective diagnosis, histopathological study, clinical investigation, treatment and prognosis of this specific neoplasm
Study of Afşin-Elbistan lignite mines drainage water and water quality of coal basin
AEL İşletme Müdürlüğü işletme sahasında yaklaşık 350 kuyu ile drenaj yapılmakta ve ayda ortalama 4.4 milyon m3 su drene edilmektedir. Bu suların %96'sı AEL'nin sadece GD'sunu kapsayan ve karstik Köseyahya Napı'nın kireçtaşlarından, diğer kısmı Ahmetçik formasyonu olarak adlandırılan sedimanter araziden kaynaklanmaktadır. Drenajı yapılan sular 16 km uzunluğundaki üstü açık drenaj kanalı ile Hurman Çayı'na boşaltılmaktadır. Bu suların bir kısmı Hurman Çayı'na ulaşmadan alınarak tarımsal sulamada kullanılmaktadır. Karstik sahadaki bazı kuyular İl Özel İdare'ye ve çevre belediyelere tahsis edilerek içme suyu olarak kullandırılmaktadır. Ayrıca, AEL'nin ihtiyacı olan içme ve kullanım suyu karstik arazideki su kuyularından sağlanmaktadır. Bu çalışma kapsamında öncelikle drene edilen suların içme suyu açısından TSE-266'ya sulama suyu açısından Su Kirliliği Kontrolü Yönetmeliği Teknik Usuller Tebliği Sulama Suyu Kriterlerine uygunluğu değerlendirilmiştir. Bunun için sedimanter, karstik su kuyularından ve yüzey drenaj sularından örnekler alınmış, su kimyası analizleri yaptırılmıştır. Ayrıca Afşin-Elbistan Kömür Havzasının su kalitesini incelemek ve İşletmenin etkilerini görebilmek için yüzey ve yeraltı olmak üzere havza giriş ve çıkışından örnekler alınmıştır. Su kalitesini belirlemek için alınan örnekler farklı diyagramlar yardımıyla değerlendirilmiştir. Sonuç olarak; AEL'nin yeraltı sularına ve Hurman Çayına olumsuz bir etkisine rastlanmamıştır. Yeraltı drenaj suları sulama suyu olarak kullanılmaya, karstik sahadaki sular ise içme suyu olarak değerlendirilmeye uygundur. Yüzey drenaj sularının ise bir kısmı kullanmaya uygun bulunmuş, bir kısmı ise uygun bulunmamıştır.Drainage is done with approximately 350 wells and approximately 4.4 millions m3 of water is drained per month from Afşin-Elbistan Lignite Mine 96 % of the water is due to Köseyahya Nap limestone, covering only South-West of the mine and with karstic structure, other portion is due to sedimentary land called as Ahmetçik Formation. The drained water is discharged to Hurman stream through 16 km long open drainage channel. Some of the water is taken and used for irrigation of agricultural fields before it reaches Hurman stream. Some wells in karstic land are allocated to the State Provincial Administration and to surrounding municipalities for utilization as drinking water. Additionally, water needed by the mine is being provided from the drained karstic land. In this study, compliance of the drained water as drinking water with TSE 266, and also compliance of the drained water as irrigation water with Water Pollution Control Regulation Technical Procedures Report Irrigation Water Criteria has been evaluated. Therefore, water chemistry analyses have been done by taking samples from sedimentary land, karstic land and surface drainage. In addition, samples have been obtained from each of entry and exit of the basin, surface and groundwater, in order to investigate water quality and observe the effects of the operation in Afşin-Elbistan Basin. Samples have been evaluted by help of different diagrams to determine water quality. As a result, AEL lignite mine has been found to have no negative effect on groundwater and Hurman stream in terms of water quality. All of the drained water has been found appropriate for being used as irrigation water and the water in karstic land has been found appropriate for being used as drinking water. In the basin outlet waters, no sign of contamination has been observed for surface water and groundwater. Some draigned surface water has been found appropriate for irrigation but same has been not
