Multiboson effects in multiparticle production
The influence of multiboson effects on pion multiplicities, single-pion
spectra and two-pion correlation functions is discussed in terms of an
analytically solvable model. The applicability of its basic factorization
assumption is clarified. An approximate scaling of the basic observables with
the phase space density is demonstrated in the low density (gas) limit. This
scaling and also its violation at high densities due to the condensate
formation is described by approximate analytical formulae which allow, in
principle, for the identification of the multiboson effects among others. For
moderate densities indicated by the experimental data, a fast saturation of
multiboson effects with the number of contributing cumulants is obtained,
allowing for the account of these effects in realistic transport code
simulations. At high densities, the spectra are mainly determined by the
universal condensate term and the initially narrow Poisson multiplicity
distribution approaches a wide Bose-Einstein one. As a result, the intercepts
of the inclusive and fixed- correlation functions (properly normalized to 1
at large relative momenta) approach 2 and 1, respectively and their widths
logarithmically increase with the increasing phase space density. It is shown
that the neglect of energy-momentum constraints in the model is justified
except near a multipion threshold, where these constraints practically exclude
the possibility of a very cold condensate production. It is argued that
spectacular multiboson effects are likely to be observed only in the rare
events containing sufficiently high density (speckle) fluctuations.Comment: 30 pages including 10 figures, LaTex, a revised version of SUBATECH

Coulomb Corrections for Interferometry Analysis of Expanding Hadron Systems
The problem of the Coulomb corrections to the two-boson correlation functions for the systems formed in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions is considered for large effective system volumes. The modification of the standard zero-distance correction (so called Gamow or Coulomb factor) has been proposed for such a kind of systems. For the 1r+1r+ and [(+[(+ correlation functions the analytical calculations of the Coulomb correction are compared with the exact numerical results
Particle Correlations with Heavy Ions at LHC Energies
The ALICE detector will offer very good conditions to study the space-time characteristics of particle production in heavy-ion collisions at LHC from measurements of the correlation function of identical and non-identical particles at small relative velocities. The correlations - induced by Coulomb and nuclear final-state interactions - of non-identical particles appear to be directly sensitive to the space-time asymmetries of particle production allowing, in particular, a measurement of the mean relative delays in particle emission at time scales as small as few fm/c. The problem of Coulomb interaction of the correlated particles is particularly important in the case of the large effective volumes formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion reactions
Effect of the source charge on charged-beam interferometry
We investigate quantal perturbations of the interferometric correlations of
charged bosons by the Coulomb field of an instantaneous, charged source. The
source charge increases the apparent source size by weakening the correlation
at non-zero relative momenta. The effect is strongest for pairs with a small
total momentum and is stronger for kaons than for pions of the same momenta.
The experimental data currently available are well described by this effect
without invoking Pratt's exploding source model. A simple expression is
proposed to account for the effect.Comment: 9 pages TEX, 3 Postscript figures available at

The STAR Silicon Strip Detector (SSD)
The STAR Silicon Strip Detector (SSD) completes the three layers of the
Silicon Vertex Tracker (SVT) to make an inner tracking system located inside
the Time Projection Chamber (TPC). This additional fourth layer provides two
dimensional hit position and energy loss measurements for charged particles,
improving the extrapolation of TPC tracks through SVT hits. To match the high
multiplicity of central Au+Au collisions at RHIC the double sided silicon strip
technology was chosen which makes the SSD a half million channels detector.
Dedicated electronics have been designed for both readout and control. Also a
novel technique of bonding, the Tape Automated Bonding (TAB), was used to
fullfill the large number of bounds to be done. All aspects of the SSD are
shortly described here and test performances of produced detection modules as
well as simulated results on hit reconstruction are given.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl
Lambda-proton correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions
The prospect of using lambda-proton correlations to extract source sizes in
relativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated. It is found that the strong
interaction induces a large peak in the correlation function that provides more
sensitive source size measurements than two-proton correlations under some
circumstances. The prospect of using lambda-proton correlations to measure the
time lag between lambda and proton emissions is also studied.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure, revtex style. Two short paragraphs are added at

Two-Proton Correlations near Midrapidity in p+Pb and S+Pb Collisions at the CERN SPS
Correlations of two protons emitted near midrapidity in p+Pb collisions at
450 GeV/c and S+Pb collisions at 200A GeV/c are presented, as measured by the
NA44 Experiment. The correlation effect, which arises as a result of final
state interactions and Fermi-Dirac statistics, is related to the space-time
characteristics of proton emission. The measured source sizes are smaller than
the size of the target lead nucleus but larger than the sizes of the
projectiles. A dependence on the collision centrality is observed; the source
size increases with decreasing impact parameter. Proton source sizes near
midrapidity appear to be smaller than those of pions in the same interactions.
Quantitative agreement with the results of RQMD (v1.08) simulations is found
for p+Pb collisions. For S+Pb collisions the measured correlation effect is
somewhat weaker than that predicted by the model simulations, implying either a
larger source size or larger contribution of protons from long-lived particle
decays.Comment: 10 pages (LaTeX) text, 4 (EPS) figures; accepted for publication in

Strange Meson Enhancement in PbPb Collisions
The NA44 Collaboration has measured yields and differential distributions of
K+, K-, pi+, pi- in transverse kinetic energy and rapidity, around the
center-of-mass rapidity in 158 A GeV/c Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. A
considerable enhancement of K+ production per pi is observed, as compared to
p+p collisions at this energy. To illustrate the importance of secondary hadron
rescattering as an enhancement mechanism, we compare strangeness production at
the SPS and AGS with predictions of the transport model RQMD.Comment: 11 pages, including 4 figures, LATE
Two-kaon correlations in central Pb + Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c
Two-particle interferometry of positive kaons is studied in Pb + Pb
collisions at mean transverse momenta and 0.91 GeV/c. A
three-dimensional analysis was applied to the lower data, while a
two-dimensional analysis was used for the higher data. We find that the
source size parameters are consistent with the scaling curve observed in
pion correlation measurements in the same collisions, and that the duration
time of kaon emission is consistent with zero within the experimental
sensitivity.Comment: 4 pages incl. 1 table and 3 fig's; RevTeX; accepted for publication
