A comparative study of four novel sleep apnoea episode prediction systems

    Get PDF
The prediction of sleep apnoea and hypopnoea episodes could allow treatment to be applied before the event be-comes detrimental to the patients sleep, and for a more spe-cific form of treatment. It is proposed that features extracted from breaths preceding an apnoea and hypopnoea could be used in neural networks for the prediction of these events. Four different predictive systems were created, processing the nasal airflow signal using epoching, the inspiratory peak and expiratory trough values, principal component analysis (PCA) and empirical mode decomposition (EMD). The neu-ral networks were validated with naïve data from six over-night polysomnographic records, resulting in 83.50% sensi-tivity and 90.50% specificity. Reliable prediction of apnoea and hypopnoea is possible using the epoched flow and EMD of breaths preceding the event

Dynamical Jahn-Teller Effect in Spin-Orbital Coupled System

Dynamical Jahn-Teller (DJT) effect in a spin-orbital coupled system on a honeycomb lattice is examined, motivated from recently observed spin-liquid behavior in Ba3_3CuSb2_2O9_9. An effective vibronic Hamiltonian, where the superexchange interaction and the DJT effect are taken into account, is derived. We find that the DJT effect induces a spin-orbital resonant state where local spin-singlet states and parallel orbital configurations are entangled with each other. This spin-orbital resonant state is realized in between an orbital ordered state, where spin-singlet pairs are localized, and an antiferromagnetic ordered state. Based on the theoretical results, a possible scenario for Ba3_3CuSb2_2O9_9 is proposed.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, to be published in PR

thesisThis was a cross-sectional descriptive investigation designed to describe the symptoms reported by women in the perimenopausal transition. Seventy-eight women completed a 2-part questionnaire concerning their experiences with menopause. The first part contained an open-ended question asking the women to list symptoms that they attributed to menopause. The second portion contained a checklist of menopausal symptoms adapted from the Blatt menopausal Index and was administered after the women had returned the open-ended section. Severity of symptoms was assessed on both portions of the questionnaire. Analysis of the open-ended questionnaires revealed 45 different symptoms. The most frequently reported systems on the open-ended questionnaire were found on the checklist portion, as well. A significantly larger number of symptoms were retorted on the checklist and women who used hormones or vasoactive drugs rated their symptoms as more serve. Demographic data and lifestyle characteristics were analyzed; however, it was found that lifestyle traits did not affect the women's perceptions of menopausal experiences

A computational approach to understanding material system : infrared coating of Ni-P on steel

    Get PDF
It is thought that Ni-P can be used as a binder for ceramics (WC, TiC, etc.) used in coating applications such as those for corrosion and wear resistance. It is the intent of this study to use existing, commercially available models, such as Thermo-Cale® and Dictra®, to predict what phases will be present, in what quantities, and where, with respect to the interface, these phases can be found for Ni-P coatings fused on steel using high-density infrared processing techniques. It is also the goal of this study to attempt to predict the amount of co-diffusion that will occur between the coating and substrate materials and what effect(s) this will have on the material properties. High-density infrared processing offers a method for close process control. Since it is a cold-wall technique, the specimen is heated directly and begins cooling immediately when the furnace is shut down. Using infrared processing also allows close control of time and temperature parameters providing the ideal environment for exploring diffusion controlled experiments

Llithostratigraphic investigation and components of a complete petroleum system within an Upper Devonian carbonate-evaporite sequence : the Birdbear Formation, Williston Basin, North Dakota

    Get PDF
The Birdbear Formation of the Williston Basin of southwestern North Dakota represents one carbonate-evaporite sequence of the Late Devonian. The formation was deposited during regression on a broad, shallow epeiric shelf and is composed principally of dolomite, limestone and anhydrite. The Birdbear Formation is conformable with the Duperow Formation below and the Three Forks Formation above. The designations of 17 lithofacies form the context for describing hydrocarbon generation, migration and accumulation. Rock-Eval 6 and total organic carbon of 42 samples were used to identify the quality of source rocks present in the formation. Good and excellent source rocks were identified in both the upper and lower members, at varying intervals, as organic rich limestones, microbialites and stromatolites. The vertical terminus of each interval is anhydrite, forming excellent seals to the present source rocks and providing conduits to three stratigraphic traps. The Birdbear Formation of the Williston Basin in southwestern North Dakota encapsulates the vital components for a complete petroleum system

Prediction Model for the Life of Nickel-cadmium Batteries in Geosynchronous Orbit Satellites

    Get PDF
A mathematical model is described which predicts the service life of nickel-cadmium batteries designed for geosynchronous orbit satellites. Regression analysis technique is used to analyze orbital data on second generation trickle charged batteries. The model gives average cell voltage as a function of design parameters, operating parameters and time. The voltage model has the properties of providing a good fit to the data, good predictive capability, and agreement with known battery performance characteristics. Average cell voltage can be predicted to within 0.02 volts for up to 8 years. This modeling shows that these batteries will operate reliably for 10 years. Third-generation batteries are expected to operate even longer
