    On the measurement of the proton-air cross section using longitudinal shower profiles

    In this paper, we will discuss the prospects of deducing the proton-air cross section from fluorescence telescope measurements of extensive air showers. As it is not possible to observe the point of first interaction X1X_{\rm 1} directly, other observables closely linked to X1X_{\rm 1} must be inferred from the longitudinal profiles. This introduces a dependence on the models used to describe the shower development. The most straightforward candidate for a good correlation to X1X_{\rm 1} is the depth of shower maximum XmaxX_{\rm max}. We will discuss the sensitivity of an XmaxX_{\rm max}-based analysis on σpair\sigma_{\rm p-air} and quantify the systematic uncertainties arising from the model dependence, parameters of the reconstruction method itself and a possible non-proton contamination of the selected shower sample.Comment: 4 pages, Proceedings for ISVHECRI Weihei 200

    Optical injection and terahertz detection of the macroscopic Berry curvature

    We propose an experimental scheme to probe the Berry curvature of solids. Our method is sensitive to arbitrary regions of the Brillouin zone, and employs only basic optical and terahertz techniques to yield a background free signal. Using semiconductor quantum wells as a prototypical system, we discuss how to inject Berry curvature macroscopically, and probe it in a way that provides information about the underlying microscopic Berry curvature.Comment: 4 pages, accepted in Physical Review Letter

    Detection of Exotic Massive Hadrons in Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Telescopes

    We investigate the detection of exotic massive strongly interacting hadrons (uhecrons) in ultra high energy cosmic ray telescopes. The conclusion is that experiments such as the Pierre Auger Observatory have the potential to detect these particles. It is shown that uhecron showers have clear distinctive features when compared to proton and nuclear showers. The simulation of uhecron air showers, and its detection and reconstruction by fluorescence telescopes is described. We determine basic cuts in observables that will separate uhecrons from the cosmic ray bulk, assuming this is composed by protons. If these are composed by heavier nucleus the separation will be much improved. We also discuss photon induced showers. The complementarity between uhecron detection in accelerator experiments is discussed.Comment: 9 page 9 figure

    Storage of correlated patterns in a perceptron

    We calculate the storage capacity of a perceptron for correlated gaussian patterns. We find that the storage capacity αc\alpha_c can be less than 2 if similar patterns are mapped onto different outputs and vice versa. As long as the patterns are in general position we obtain, in contrast to previous works, that αc1\alpha_c \geq 1 in agreement with Cover's theorem.     Spin magnetotransport in two-dimensional hole systems

    Spin current of two-dimensional holes occupying the ground-state subband in an asymmetric quantum well and interacting with static disorder potential is calculated in the presence of a weak magnetic field H perpendicular to the well plane. Both spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman coupling are taken into account. It is shown that the applied electric field excites both the transverse (spin-Hall) and diagonal spin currents, the latter changes its sign at a finite H and becomes greater than the spin-Hall current as H increases. The effective spin-Hall conductivity introduced to describe the spin response in Hall bars is considerably enhanced by the magnetic field in the case of weak disorder and demonstrates a non-monotonic dependence on H.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, published in Phys.
