The Epiphany of Yvaral’s St. Vincent Portrait
Mark Elder describes the history and technique of Yvaral’s Portrait of Saint Vincent de Paul. The only things Yvaral used to produce the portrait were aluminum fins and light. The technique inspired Elder to create his own work of public art in Chicago, The Mandatum. He explains how it was made
An exploration of moral leadership: What are the personal attributes, dispositions and capacities of principals who lead with moral purpose within their school community?
Brundrett, Fitzgerald and Sommerfeldt (2006) argue that the role of a principal has been burdened by site based administrivia, and increasing accountability centred on teacher performance and student attainment. However, Notman (2012) has identified school principals who develop certain types of personal attributes, dispositions, and capacities to lead in a moral way. They also appear to have a broader view of education and society. This leads towards the notion of exploring principals’ who lead with moral purpose in the context of their school community.
Literature suggests the best way to explore principals who lead with moral purpose is through the social constructivist paradigm and qualitative methodology (Bear-Lehman, 2002). As a result, six New Zealand principals were identified and interviewed using a semi-structured interview process. The data from these interviews was then analysed using an interpretivist approach.
Findings from the research illustrated how principals who lead with moral purpose have a deep conviction towards valuing human relationships within their school community. Moral purpose influences a principal to be driven by a social justice belief that every person in a community is entitled to a meaningful education and reasonable life. This understanding is further shaped by an ethical belief that the moral purpose of education is to ensure that the rights and aspirations of every community member, starting with their students, is protected and enhanced.
This research has shown that principals who lead with moral purpose are more likely to be moral leaders, where their focus is on leading others in a moral way. They model and communicate ethical beliefs through their moral actions, which imbue a culture of high trust, collective responsibility and shared moral purpose. This has led to an authentic view of moral leadership which includes a moral leaders personal self-construct. Authentic moral principals have the capacity to critically self-reflect due to their developing ethical and moral intelligences
The Story of the Eel
This story and the other oral traditions from the island of Uripiv
that are featured in this issue of The Contemporary Pacific were recorded in the
vernacular by Ross McKerras, transcribed by Numa Longga and Sanita Kenneth,
and translated into English by Sethy and Ralph Regenvanu. The stories were first
printed in The Story of the Eel and Other Stories from Uripiv Island, Vanuatu,
published in 2004 by the Vanuatu Cultural Centre, Port Vila, and are reproduced
here, in slightly edited form, with the permission of the Vanuatu National Cultural
Council

On groups and counter automata
We study finitely generated groups whose word problems are accepted by
counter automata. We show that a group has word problem accepted by a blind
n-counter automaton in the sense of Greibach if and only if it is virtually
free abelian of rank n; this result, which answers a question of Gilman, is in
a very precise sense an abelian analogue of the Muller-Schupp theorem. More
generally, if G is a virtually abelian group then every group with word problem
recognised by a G-automaton is virtually abelian with growth class bounded
above by the growth class of G. We consider also other types of counter
automata.Comment: 18 page
Detecting Dark Domain Walls
Light scalar fields, with double well potentials and direct matter couplings,
undergo density driven phase transitions, leading to the formation of domain
walls. Such theories could explain dark energy, dark matter or source the
nanoHz gravitational-wave background. We describe an experiment that could be
used to detect such domain walls in a laboratory experiment, solving for the
scalar field profile, and showing how the domain wall affects the motion of a
test particle. We find that, in currently unconstrained regions of parameter
space, the domain walls leave detectable signatures.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

The Extravehicular Maneuvering Unit's New Long Life Battery and Lithium Ion Battery Charger
The Long Life (Lithium Ion) Battery is designed to replace the current Extravehicular Mobility Unit Silver/Zinc Increased Capacity Battery, which is used to provide power to the Primary Life Support Subsystem during Extravehicular Activities. The Charger is designed to charge, discharge, and condition the battery either in a charger-strapped configuration or in a suit-mounted configuration. This paper will provide an overview of the capabilities and systems engineering development approach for both the battery and the charge
The AMCIS 2003 Panels on IS Education-I: Let Us Not Throw Out the Baby with the Bath Water: Information, Technology, and Systems All Matter in the Core IS Course
Recent discussion about MIS centers on its role as an academic discipline and the utility of the core IS course in undergraduate business programs. This article presents a summary of a panel discussion at the AMCIS 2003 meeting about these issues. In includes the results of a survey on what elements of the IS 2002.1 Introduction to MIS course are being used that was presented. It also presents the discussions among panel participants and the audience and the panelists emerging perspective on the topic. Some advocate a reduction in the focus on systems and technology in the core IS course. However, we believe that this view is an over-reaction to concerns about the course, and suggest (as did many before us) that systems theory is a central organizing them of the core IS course. We believe that the response by the field should not be to water down our core course, but to identify our contribution and highlight it. To this end, we offer a concise statement of what we believe is the heart of the core IS course
