Context of STEM Integration in Schools: Views from In-service Science Teachers
This is the final version of the article. Available from ISER publications via the DOI in this record. This study explores science teachers' views regarding Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pedagogy and its interdisciplinary nature. It also seeks to identify teachers' views on the contextual factors that facilitate and hinder such pedagogy in their schools. Qualitative methodologies were used through focus group discussions and an interview protocol. From the specific contextual issues that were highlighted in the findings, was teacher self-efficacy, pedagogical-knowledge, issues related to establishing a collaborative school culture and familiarity to STEM education among school administrators, students and parents. Findings expressed teachers' concerns of their under-
preparedness to enact STEM practices and illustrated that engineering is the least mentioned discipline to be integrated with science. The study ends with recommendations that could lead to develop a professional development model to enact STEM education in schools based on valuing partnership with universities and industries as a necessary step for enacting a STEM integrated model. This research was conducted as part of the professional development for in-service Science and mathematics teachers Research group with support of the Excellence Research Centre of Science and Mathematics Education - King Saudi University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Perspectives of an Enterprise Integration Plug-in System Architecture for Networked Manufacturing Systems
This paper is a part of a research project funded by the Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF), to create a product serving the digital transformation of Egyptian manufacturing companies. It allows a manufacturing company to be a member of a distributed manufacturing network. The resulting system can be plugged into any ERP system. In this work, the limitation of a centralized integration entity to satisfy loosely coupling of distributed systems is overcome. The SOA framework and the remote method invocation (RMI) are applied using SOAP-XML technology. Enterprise integration patterns (EIP) were used in the architecture design
Revisit Sparse Polynomial Interpolation based on Randomized Kronecker Substitution
In this paper, a new reduction based interpolation algorithm for black-box
multivariate polynomials over finite fields is given. The method is based on
two main ingredients. A new Monte Carlo method is given to reduce black-box
multivariate polynomial interpolation to black-box univariate polynomial
interpolation over any ring. The reduction algorithm leads to multivariate
interpolation algorithms with better or the same complexities most cases when
combining with various univariate interpolation algorithms. We also propose a
modified univariate Ben-or and Tiwarri algorithm over the finite field, which
has better total complexity than the Lagrange interpolation algorithm.
Combining our reduction method and the modified univariate Ben-or and Tiwarri
algorithm, we give a Monte Carlo multivariate interpolation algorithm, which
has better total complexity in most cases for sparse interpolation of black-box
polynomial over finite fields
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes in Egyptian pediatric cancer patients with acute and chronic active HBV infection

Abstract

Background

There are eight genotypes of hepatitis B virus (A-H) and subgenotypes are recognized. Genotyping can be accomplished based on a partial sequence of HBV genome such as the pre-S or S gene. Several methods have been developed and used for HBV genotyping. This study was undertaken to determine the HBV genotypes in Egyptian pediatric cancer patients with acute and chronic liver disease.

Methods

HBV genotypes were determined in 22 patients who had acute forms of liver disease (AH) and in 48 patients with chronic active hepatitis (CAH). A type-specific primer based the nested-PCR method was employed in the HBV genotyping.

Results

This study showed that HBV infections in pediatric cancer patients are attributed predominantly to viral genotypes D and B that constituted 37.1% and 25.7%, respectively of the total infections. In addition, there was a relatively high prevalence of mixed infections of 15.7% among the studied group especially mixed A/D genotype infections. Genotype D was found significantly more often in patients with CAH than in patients with AH [23/48(47.9%) <it>v </it>3/22 (13.6%)].

Conclusion

These findings show the distribution of HBV A-D genotypes in pediatric cancer Egyptian patients. Furthermore, our results indicate a markedly high prevalence of mixed A/D genotype infections in subjects with CAH and a possible association of mixed infections with the severity of liver diseases.</p
Chemical Composition, Antioxidant Potentials, and Calcium Oxalate Anticrystallization Activity of Polyphenol and Saponin Fractions from Argania spinosa L. Press Cake
A wide range of biological properties and a potent therapeutic and prophylactic effect on chronic diseases are all present in Argania spinosa L. press cake. The aim of this research is to valorize the anticrystallization properties against calcium oxalate crystals of Argania spinosa L. press cake fractions and identify its bioactive components. Chemical species identification was performed using GC–MS analysis. The turbidimetric model was used to investigate crystallization inhibition in vitro. Infrared spectroscopy technique was used to characterize the synthesized crystals. Furthermore, both DPPH and FRAP methods were used to assess antioxidant activity. The results show that the fractions are equally important in crystallization inhibition percentages of calcium oxalate crystals. For saponin and polyphenol fractions, the inhibition percentages are in the orders of 83.49% and 82.83%, respectively. The results of the antioxidant activity by DPPH method show that the two fractions are equally important in the elimination of free radicals; the inhibition percentages were 77.87 ± 4.21 and 89.92 ± 1.39 for both polyphenols and saponins, respectively. FRAP method showed that the absorbance increases proportionally with concentration, and the absorbance are almost similar for both fractions and reach maximum values in the orders of 0.52 ± 0.07 and 0.42 ± 0.03, respectively, for saponins and polyphenols. These findings demonstrate that both fractions are rich in bioactive chemicals and have an anticrystallization capacity, allowing them to be employed for the curative and prophylactic effects against urolithiasis

Br, 18O and the origin of salinzation in the MartÃl-Alila and Smir aquifers (Tetouan Morroco)
The analysis of the occurrence of isotope (O18) in relation to other ions (Cl and Br) in the groundwater of
the Martil-Alila and Smir aquifers revels that the process of salinization is caused by intruding seawater and
polluted waters, coming from river Martil and M’diq cit
Safety and efficacy of implantable phakic contact lens versus implantable collamer lens in myopia correction
Background: Phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) have proven to be excellent substitutes for excimer laser keratorefractive surgery in certain situations. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of two pIOLs, the implantable collamer lens (ICL V4c) versus the implantable phakic contact lens (IPCL V2), for myopic correction.
Methods: In this prospective randomized clinical trial, we allocated eligible eyes with myopia > - 6 diopters into IPCL or ICL implantation groups, each including 100 eyes of 100 individuals. Preoperative and postoperative assessments at 3, 6, and 12 months included measurements of the spherical equivalent (SE), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA), best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), maximum keratometry (K1), minimum keratometry (K2), mean keratometry (Kmean), anterior chamber depth (ACD), anterior chamber angle (ACA), and endothelial cell density (ECD).
Results: The groups had comparable demographic characteristics and baseline visual and anatomical values (all P > 0.05). The UCDVA, BCDVA, and SE of the two groups were comparable at baseline and at all postoperative follow-up examinations (all P > 0.05). Both groups experienced significant improvements in UCDVA, BCDVA, and SE at three months postoperatively (all P = 0.001), and measurements remained stable for up to 12 months. Keratometry readings were comparable between the groups over the follow-up period and remained unchanged at all visits (all P > 0.05). The ACA in the ICL group was significantly decreased at three months postoperatively (P = 0.001) and then widened significantly at 6 and 12 months (both P = 0.001). In the IPCL group, the postoperative ACA was significantly decreased at three months (P = 0.001) and was comparable to that in the ICL group (P > 0.01). However, at the 6- and 12-month postoperative visits, the ACA was significantly narrower in the IPCL group than in the ICL group (both P = 0.001). The ACD in both groups was decreased at three months postoperatively (both P = 0.001) and remained stable until the end of the study. The ECD remained comparable between the groups at all postoperative visits (all P > 0.05). We did not observe a significant ECD reduction in either group at any postoperative follow-up visit (all P > 0.05). We encountered no serious complications in either group.
Conclusions: ICL and IPCL had comparable safety and efficacy outcomes in terms of anterior chamber morphometrics, visual and refractive results, and corneal parameters. Further multicenter randomized clinical trials with longer follow-up periods, larger sample sizes, and measurement of additional anterior chamber and corneal morphometrics, vault, and other vision parameters are needed to verify these findings
Symptomatic Acute Hepatitis C in Egypt: Diagnosis, Spontaneous Viral Clearance, and Delayed Treatment with 12 Weeks of Pegylated Interferon Alfa-2a
The aim of this study was to estimate the proportion of spontaneous viral clearance (SVC) after symptomatic acute hepatitis C and to evaluate the efficacy of 12 weeks of pegylated interferon alfa-2a in patients who did not clear the virus spontaneously.Patients with symptomatic acute hepatitis C were recruited from two "fever hospitals" in Cairo, Egypt. Patients still viremic three months after the onset of symptoms were considered for treatment with 12 weeks of pegylated interferon alfa-2a (180 microg/week).Between May 2002 and February 2006, 2243 adult patients with acute hepatitis were enrolled in the study. The SVC rate among 117 patients with acute hepatitis C was 33.8% (95%CI [25.9%-43.2%]) at three months and 41.5% (95%CI [33.0%-51.2%]) at six months. The sustained virological response (SVR) rate among the 17 patients who started treatment 4-6 months after onset of symptoms was 15/17 = 88.2% (95%CI [63.6%-98.5%]).Spontaneous viral clearance was high (41.5% six months after the onset of symptoms) in this population with symptomatic acute hepatitis C. Allowing time for spontaneous clearance should be considered before treatment is initiated for symptomatic acute hepatitis C
