    Employment Changes following Breast Cancer Diagnosis: The Effects of Race and Place

    The financial implications of breast cancer diagnosis may be greater among rural and black women. Women with incident breast cancer were recruited as part of the Carolina Breast Cancer Study. We compared unadjusted and adjusted prevalence of cancer-related job or income loss, and a composite measure of either outcome, by rural residence and stratified by race. We included 2435 women: 11.7% were rural; 48.5% were black; and 38.0% reported employment changes after diagnosis. Rural women more often reported employment effects, including reduced household income (43.6% vs 35.4%, two-sided ?2 test P =. 04). Rural white, rural black, and urban black women each more often reported income reduction (statistically significant vs. urban white women), although these groups did not meaningfully differ from each other. In multivariable regression, rural differences were mediated by socioeconomic factors, but racial differences remained. Programs and policies to reduce financial toxicity in vulnerable patients should address indirect costs of cancer, including lost wages and employment

    The γ rays following the 72s 150Ho 2- Gamow-Teller β decay have been investigated with the CLUSTER CUBE setup, an array of six EUROBALL CLUSTER Ge detectors in close cubic geometry, providing a γ ray detection sensitivity of 2×10-5 per β-parent decay for γ-ray energies up to 5 MeV. The fine structure of the Gamow-Teller resonance at 4.4-MeV excitation in 150Dy has been studied. The resolved levels are compared with Shell Model predictions

    High-spin states of the mass A=39A=39 mirror pair 39^{39}K and 39^{39}Ca were investigated via the fusion-evaporation reaction 28^{28}Si+16^{16}O at 125 MeV beam energy. The Gammasphere array in conjunction with the 4π4\pi charged-particle detector array Microball and neutron detectors was used to detect γ\gamma rays in coincidence with evaporated light particles. The results of the first high-spin study of the Tz=1/2T_z=-1/2 nucleus 39^{39}Ca are discussed in terms of mirror symmetry and compared to spherical shell-model calculations in the 1d3/21d_{3/2}1f7/21f_{7/2} configuration space

    Aspirin was first synthesised 100 years ago and its preparation and marketing is generally reckoned to have been the foundation of the pharmaceutical industry. For most of the time since then it has been used for the relief of pain and fever. The modern phase of aspirin use commenced with the reporting in 1974 of a randomised controlled trial in the secondary prevention of death by low-dose aspirin given to patients who had suffered a myocardial infarct. Reports of other trials followed and an overview of the first six trials was presented to the inaugural meeting of the Society for Clinical Trials in Philadelphia in 1980. There have been two further major overviews and the most recent, based on 145 trials, established that low-dose aspirin reduces vascular events by around one third. It has been estimated that, used appropriately, aspirin could prevent 100,000 premature deaths each year worldwide, at a cost of about 250 Pounds (400)perlifesaved,andabout80Pounds(400) per life saved, and about 80 Pounds (130) per cardiovascular event prevented. The evidence indicates that it is seriously underused at present.
