Seasonal Reservation Scheduling with Resource Costs: A Mathematical Modeling Approach

    No full text
In this study, a novel optimization problem for simultaneous capacity planning and scheduling in reservation scheduling environments is proposed. The problem is important for seasonal reservation systems such as hotel or seat reservations of travel agencies, or operation and treatment reservations in health tourism. The objective of the problem is to maximize the net profit gained from the processed reservations. To the best of our knowledge, the problem was not previously studied. An integer programming model is developed for exact solutions and extensive computational experimentation reveals model performance under different scenarios. The results are analyzed, and managerial implications are discussed

In this study, we present the implementation and experimental analysis of a modeling approach for analyzing tactical level land combat to generate information for weapon and ammunition planning. The discrete-time stochastic model (DSM), which can handle small and moderately large force levels, is based on single shot kill probabilities. Forces are assumed to be heterogeneous on both sides, and both directed and area fire types are modeled by means of combinatorial analysis. DSM considers overkills and can handle noncombat loss and engagement processes, discrete reinforcements, force combinations and divisions. In addition to experimenting with DSM, we estimate attrition rate coefficients used in Lanchester combat models, such that the two models will yield similar figures for force levels throughout the combat.M.S. - Master of Scienc

A DYNAMIC PACKING APPROACH FOR INTERNET-OF-THINGS AND LOGISTICS APPLICATIONS

    No full text
A novel dynamic rectangular packing model for a resource allocation problem, which has many applications in Logistics Internet-of-Things (L-IoT) is considered in this study. We use an optimization approach to deal with an IoT-based problem, whose objective is to maximize the profit obtained from packing the data demand over a sequence of time frames, while satisfying several quality of service constraints. We propose a nonlinear integer programming model for the problem that optimizes demand partitioning and rectangle packing simultaneously, for the first time in literature. By introducing effective upper and lower bounds for this practically important problem, a computational experimentation is designed for assessing the model and bound performances. An extensive discussion and recommendations for policy-making are included based on the computational results.</p

Sürdürülebilir Ağ Yönetimi için Performans Metrikleri ve İzleme Araçları

Network infrastructures comprise the backbone of our modern life, ranging in scale from relatively microlevel settings of offices or university campuses, to macro-level structures such as smart cities or national defense systems. Consequently, effective management of the quality and sustainability of provided services and network infrastructures has grown to be essential for modern service providers. Considering standard features like reliability, availability and maintainability, several questions are identified in this study for network performance management and investment levels of sustainable network infrastructures. We describe various stages of the performance management processes, along with corresponding software tools to measure network efficiency and sustainability for information and communications technologies. Fundamental key performance indicator categories and their definitions are also compiled according to their functions within the network management context. Depending on the importance of services provided on a network, it is necessary to develop different performance management systems for monitoring the infrastructure for different practitioners. The development of required management systems will be possible by integrating the comprehensive compilation of indicators and software tools presented in this study.Ağ altyapıları, görece mikro ölçekli ofis veya üniversite kampüslerinden makro ölçekli akıllı şehirler veya ulusal savunma sistemleri gibi yapılara kadar değişen büyüklükleri ile modern yaşamımızın omurgasını oluşturmaktadır.

A new era of seeking knowledge for #lymphedema on social media: A detailed Instagram hashtag analysis

    Get PDF
Instagram® is one of the most active social media platforms with over a billion users worldwide. Since the importance of education on lymphedema has been established due to the chronic nature of the disease, seeking knowledge attracts much attention not only clinically but also on social platforms such as Instagram ®. Our aim was to examine content by analyzing posts tagged with hashtags on Instagram ® related to lymphedema. Nine predefined hashtags related to lymphedema were used to search posts uploaded to Instagram® via the Apify tool. Retrieved public posts were classified and analyzed by four researchers for their content and post-type. We found that the vast majority of sharing on Instagram® in the context of lymphedema and its related aspects have relatively low scores for both relevancy and accuracy with a 77% irrelevancy rate. The best posts were those determined to be educational, which were found 57% relevant and correct. Medical professionals should consider that disseminating true guidance and therapy carries importance for patients with lymphedema and treatment success. The ability for patients to reach knowledge via social media might also be an important aspect in reliving suffering due to lymphedema. However, our results demonstrate that Instagram® might not be a good platform for patients to discover reliable information about lymphedema. Copyright by International Society of Lymphology

A Sequential Workforce Scheduling and Routing Problem for the Retail Industry: A Case Study

    No full text
This study investigated the operational workforce scheduling and routing problem of a leading international retail company. Currently, the company plans to launch a new product into the Turkish market, which will be used in all its retail stores across the country. For the best marketing outcome, branding of all retail stores needs to be renewed by an outsourced workforce with a minimum of cost and time. We framed this as a workforce scheduling and routing optimization problem. Therefore, a two-stage solution was proposed. The retail stores were partitioned into disjoint regions in the first stage, and the schedules were optimized in the second stage. We employed the k-means clustering algorithm for constructing these regions. Two different heuristic approaches were applied to solve regional scheduling in the second stage of the algorithm since the resulting scheduling problem is NP-hard. Finally, a computational analysis was performed with real data and the results are discussed

Minimization of Fuel Consumption in City Bus Transportation: A Case Study for Izmir

    Get PDF
In this study, we handle a real life optimization problem of a metropolitan city bus service. The problem\u27s focus is the fuel consumption due to dead mileage, given the bus requirements of all route schedules. We obtain the optimal route bus-garage allocations that minimize the total distance covered in all pull-out and pull-in trips, and reach significant improvement levels with respect to the current situation. We consider the midday demand fluctuations on each route, so that some of the buses have to make extra pull-in and pull-out trips before parking at their night garages after ending their last service trips. Moreover, we develop a multicriteria model which takes into account the fuzzy levels of passenger satisfaction and parking safety combined with the previous minimization objective
