Observational manifestations of solar magneto-convection -- center-to-limb variation
We present the first center-to-limb G-band images synthesized from high
resolution simulations of solar magneto-convection. Towards the limb the
simulations show "hilly" granulation with dark bands on the far side, bright
granulation walls and striated faculae, similar to observations. At disk center
G-band bright points are flanked by dark lanes. The increased brightness in
magnetic elements is due to their lower density compared with the surrounding
intergranular medium. One thus sees deeper layers where the temperature is
higher. At a given geometric height, the magnetic elements are cooler than the
surrounding medium. In the G-band, the contrast is further increased by the
destruction of CH in the low density magnetic elements. The optical depth unity
surface is very corrugated. Bright granules have their continuum optical depth
unity 80 km above the mean surface, the magnetic elements 200-300 km below. The
horizontal temperature gradient is especially large next to flux
concentrations. When viewed at an angle, the deep magnetic elements optical
surface is hidden by the granules and the bright points are no longer visible,
except where the "magnetic valleys" are aligned with the line of sight. Towards
the limb, the low density in the strong magnetic elements causes unit
line-of-sight optical depth to occur deeper in the granule walls behind than
for rays not going through magnetic elements and variations in the field
strength produce a striated appearance in the bright granule walls.Comment: To appear in ApJL. 6 pages 4 figure
DISTRIBUTION AND MOVEMENTS OF BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS (TURSIOPS TRUNCATUS) ALONG THE NORTHERN SOUTH CAROLINA COAST: A RESEARCH PARTNERSHIP WITH ECOTOURISM
Assessments of bottlenose dolphin stocks rely on current information about the distribution and abundance of specific populations. We partnered with two ecotourism dolphin watch businesses to investigate bottlenose dolphins along the northern South Carolina coast. The temporal and spatial distribution of dolphins was examined by comparing dorsal fin images from research-based surveys with photo-identification efforts from commercial dolphin watch groups. Matches between survey locations and times revealed patterns of seasonal residency, potential migratory dispersal between seasons, and variable patterns for home range size. An enhanced understanding of the structure of local populations will contribute to the management of local fisheries, ecotour operations, and coastal ocean health
Fuming Method for Micropatterning Structures on Langmuir- Blodgett Films

To access the final edited and published work see http://doi.org/10.1021/la804104k.Lipid monolayers of L-α-dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) are used to pattern substrates using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. Lipid monolayers are deposited onto a freshly cleaved mica surface or glass capillary under conditions that lead to distinct patterns in the film. Exposure of the supported monolayer to ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate fumes leads to preferential polymerization in the more hydrated regions of the patterned monolayer. This method enables surfaces to be micropatterned where the lateral features are controlled by the structure present in the underlying LB film and the vertical feature size is controlled by the length of the fuming process. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements confirm that the original structure in the LB film is preserved following fuming and that the lateral and vertical feature sizes can be controlled from nanometers to microns. This method, therefore, provides a rapid and versatile approach for micropatterning both flat and curved surfaces on a variety of substrates
Measurements of Forbush decreases at Mars: both by MSL on ground and by MAVEN in orbit
The Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD), on board Mars Science Laboratory's
(MSL) Curiosity rover, has been measuring ground level particle fluxes along
with the radiation dose rate at the surface of Mars since August 2012. Similar
to neutron monitors at Earth, RAD sees many Forbush decreases (FDs) in the
galactic cosmic ray (GCR) induced surface fluxes and dose rates. These FDs are
associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and/or stream/corotating
interaction regions (SIRs/CIRs). Orbiting above the Martian atmosphere, the
Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft has also been
monitoring space weather conditions at Mars since September 2014. The
penetrating particle flux channels in the Solar Energetic Particle (SEP)
instrument onboard MAVEN can also be employed to detect FDs. For the first
time, we study the statistics and properties of a list of FDs observed in-situ
at Mars, seen both on the surface by MSL/RAD and in orbit detected by the
MAVEN/SEP instrument. Such a list of FDs can be used for studying
interplanetary CME (ICME) propagation and SIR evolution through the inner
heliosphere. The magnitudes of different FDs can be well-fitted by a power-law
distribution. The systematic difference between the magnitudes of the FDs
within and outside the Martian atmosphere may be mostly attributed to the
energy-dependent modulation of the GCR particles by both the pass-by ICMEs/SIRs
and the Martian atmosphere
Defining Young in the Context of Prostate Cancer
The experience of prostate cancer is for most men a major life stress with the psychological burden of this disease falling more heavily on those who are younger. Despite this, being young as it applies to prostate cancer is not yet clearly defined with varied chronological approaches applied. However, men’s responses to health crises are closely bound to life course and masculinities from which social roles emerge. This paper applied qualitative methodology (structured focus groups and semistructured interviews with expert informants) using interpretative phenomenological analysis to define what it means to be young and have prostate cancer. Structured focus groups were held with 26 consumer advisors (men diagnosed with prostate cancer who provide support to other men with prostate cancer or raise community awareness) and health professionals. As well, 15 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and in their 40s, 50s, or 60s participated in semi-structured interviews. Participants discussed the attributes that describe a young man with prostate cancer and the experience of being young and diagnosed with prostate cancer. Chronological definitions of a young man were absent or inconsistent. Masculine constructions of what it means to be a young man and life course characteristics appear more relevant to defining young as it applies to prostate cancer compared with chronological age. These findings have implications for better understanding the morbidities associated with this illness, and in designing interventions that are oriented to life course and helping young men reconstruct their identities after prostate cancer
Arthropods of the great indoorssuburban homes:characterizing diversity inside urban and suburban homes
Although humans and arthropods have been living and evolving together for all of our history, we know very little about the arthropods we share our homes with apart from major pest groups. Here we surveyed, for the first time, the complete arthropod fauna of the indoor biome in 50 houses (located in and around Raleigh, North Carolina, USA). We discovered high diversity, with a conservative estimate range of 32–211 morphospecies, and 24–128 distinct arthropod families per house. The majority of this indoor diversity (73%) was made up of true flies (Diptera), spiders (Araneae), beetles (Coleoptera), and wasps and kin (Hymenoptera, especially ants: Formicidae). Much of the arthropod diversity within houses did not consist of synanthropic species, but instead included arthropods that were filtered from the surrounding landscape. As such, common pest species were found less frequently than benign species. Some of the most frequently found arthropods in houses, such as gall midges (Cecidomyiidae) and book lice (Liposcelididae), are unfamiliar to the general public despite their ubiquity. These findings present a new understanding of the diversity, prevalence, and distribution of the arthropods in our daily lives. Considering their impact as household pests, disease vectors, generators of allergens, and facilitators of the indoor microbiome, advancing our knowledge of the ecology and evolution of arthropods in homes has major economic and human health implications
Aeroelastic Sizing for High-Speed Research (HSR) Longitudinal Control Alternatives Project (LCAP)
The Longitudinal Control Alternatives Project (LCAP) compared three high-speed civil transport configurations to determine potential advantages of the three associated longitudinal control concepts. The three aircraft configurations included a conventional configuration with a layout having a horizontal aft tail, a configuration with a forward canard in addition to a horizontal aft tail, and a configuration with only a forward canard. The three configurations were aeroelastically sized and were compared on the basis of operational empty weight (OEW) and longitudinal control characteristics. The sized structure consisted of composite honeycomb sandwich panels on both the wing and the fuselage. Design variables were the core depth of the sandwich and the thicknesses of the composite material which made up the face sheets of the sandwich. Each configuration was sized for minimum structural weight under linear and nonlinear aeroelastic loads subject to strain, buckling, ply-mixture, and subsonic and supersonic flutter constraints. This report describes the methods that were used and the results that were generated for the aeroelastic sizing of the three configurations
