Fine Structure in Energy Spectra of Ultrasmall Au Nanoparticles
We have studied tunneling into individual Au nanoparticles of estimated
diameters 2-5 nm, at dilution refrigerator temperatures. The I-V curves
indicate resonant tunneling via discrete energy levels of the particle. Unlike
previously studied normal metal particles of Au and Al, in these samples we
find that the lowest energy tunneling resonances are split into clusters of
2-10 subresonances. Such effects appear to be increasingly important in smaller
grains, as might be expected from the larger characteristic energies.Comment: 1 pdf fil
Transit confirmation and improved stellar and planet parameters for the super-Earth HD 97658 b and its host star
Super-Earths transiting nearby bright stars are key objects that
simultaneously allow for accurate measurements of both their mass and radius,
providing essential constraints on their internal composition. We present here
the confirmation, based on Spitzer transit observations, that the super-Earth
HD 97658 b transits its host star. HD 97658 is a low-mass
() K1 dwarf, as determined from the Hipparcos
parallax and stellar evolution modeling. To constrain the planet parameters, we
carry out Bayesian global analyses of Keck-HIRES radial velocities, and MOST
and Spitzer photometry. HD 97658 b is a massive () and large ( at 4.5
m) super-Earth. We investigate the possible internal compositions for HD
97658 b. Our results indicate a large rocky component, by at least 60% by mass,
and very little H-He components, at most 2% by mass. We also discuss how future
asteroseismic observations can improve the knowledge of the HD 97658 system, in
particular by constraining its age. Orbiting a bright host star, HD 97658 b
will be a key target for coming space missions TESS, CHEOPS, PLATO, and also
JWST, to characterize thoroughly its structure and atmosphere.Comment: 8 figures, accepted to Ap
Improved Orbital Parameters And Transit Monitoring For HD 156846b
HD 156846b is a Jovian planet in a highly eccentric orbit (e = 0.85) with a period of 359.55 days. The pericenter passage at a distance of 0.16 AU is nearly aligned to our line of sight, offering an enhanced transit probability of 5.4% and a potentially rich probe of the dynamics of a cool planetary atmosphere impulsively heated during close approach to a bright star (V = 6.5). We present new radial velocity (RV) and photometric measurements of this star as part of the Transit Ephemeris Refinement and Monitoring Survey. The RV measurements from the Keck-High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer reduce the predicted transit time uncertainty to 20 minutes, an order of magnitude improvement over the ephemeris from the discovery paper. We photometrically monitored a predicted transit window under relatively poor photometric conditions, from which our non-detection does not rule out a transiting geometry. We also present photometry that demonstrates stability at the millimagnitude level over its rotational timescale
Nonlinear Bloch-wave interaction and Bragg scattering in optically-induced lattices
We study, both theoretically and experimentally, the Bragg scattering of
light in optically-induced photonic lattices and reveal the key physical
mechanisms which govern nonlinear self-action of narrow beams under the
combined effects of Bragg scattering and wave diffraction, allowing for
selecting bands with different effective dispersion.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Observation of surface gap solitons in semi-infinite waveguide arrays
We report on the first observation of surface gap solitons, recently
predicted to exist at the interface between uniform and periodic dielectric
media with defocusing nonlinearity [Ya.V. Kartashov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.
96, 073901 (2006). We demonstrate strong self-trapping at the edge of a LiNbO_3
waveguide array and the formation of staggered surface solitons with
propagation constant inside the first photonic band gap. We study the crossover
between linear repulsion and nonlinear attraction at the surface, revealing the
mechanism of nonlinearity-mediated stabilization of the surface gap modes.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Controlled generation and steering of spatial gap solitons
We demonstrate the first fully controlled generation of immobile and slow
spatial gap solitons in nonlinear periodic systems with band-gap spectra, and
reveal the key features of gap solitons which distinguish them from
conventional counterparts, including a dynamical transformation of gap solitons
due to nonlinear inter-band coupling. We also predict theoretically and confirm
experimentally the effect of anomalous steering of gap solitons in
optically-induced photonic lattices.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Host Star Properties And Transit Exclusion For The HD 38529 Planetary System
The transit signature of exoplanets provides an avenue through which characterization of exoplanetary properties may be undertaken, such as studies of mean density, structure, and atmospheric composition. The Transit Ephemeris Refinement and Monitoring Survey is a program to expand the catalog of transiting planets around bright host stars by refining the orbits of known planets discovered with the radial velocity technique. Here we present results for the HD 38529 system. We determine fundamental properties of the host star through direct interferometric measurements of the radius and through spectroscopic analysis. We provide new radial velocity measurements that are used to improve the Keplerian solution for the two known planets, and we find no evidence for a previously postulated third planet. We also present 12 years of precision robotic photometry of HD 38529 that demonstrate the inner planet does not transit and the host star exhibits cyclic variations in seasonal mean brightness with a timescale of approximately six years
Microwave assisted electrolysis of alkaline water solution
The effect of microwaves (MW) on the electrolytic process of 6M KOH water solution is investigated in the temperature range from 291 K to 337 K. At lower temperatures, microwaves facilitate electrolytic process, whereas the effect is reversed at higher temperatures.Physical chemistry 2006 : 8th international conference on fundamental and applied aspects of physical chemistry; Belgrade (Serbia); 26-29 September 200
Observation of discrete vortex solitons in optically-induced photonic lattices
We report on the frst experimental observation of discrete vortex solitons in
two-dimensional optically-induced photonic lattices. We demonstrate strong
stabilization of an optical vortex by the lattice in a self-focusing nonlinear
medium and study the generation of the discrete vortices from a broad class of
singular beams.Comment: 4pages, 5 colour figures. to appear in PR
