Ecumenical Trends: Three Forms of Ecumenism within Christianity

This paper broadly discusses the concept of ecumenism based off of my personal experiences as a Christian and a series of interviews that were conducted. To understand ecumenism, I introduce ecumenism in relation to other concerns of a congregation and detail its historical and biblical groundings. I also introduce a framework by which to understand faith, and draw on this to make sense of the different ecumenical trends that I noticed within Christianity. These three trends are the governmental faith and order ecumenism, the service-oriented life and action ecumenism and the more exclusive biblical ecumenism. I conclude by speculating on how trends in larger society impact the forms of ecumenism that I have described and provide some thoughts on where ecumenism will go in the future

BEM VIVER [SUMAK KAWSAY]: NOTAS SOBRE A CONSIDERAÇÃO DO ESPORTE COMO UM RECURSO COMUM CULTURAL

In this paper, an examination of the traditional commons is followed by an explanation of the ways that people have resisted their enclosure – with particular reference to struggles to retain space for the purposes of recreation. I then consider recent research on the commons, and the growing identification of new commons. The final part of the paper explores the implications of considering sport as a cultural commons, and the paper concludes by arguing that the commons provide an exemplary theme for a public sociology of sport.En este artículo, un examen de los recursos comunes tradicionales antecede una explicación sobre cómo las personas han resistido a su cercamiento –con referencia específica a las luchas para mantener el espacio dedicado a la recreación. A continuación, examino la investigación reciente sobre los recursos comunes y la identificación cada vez mayor de otros recursos de ese tipo. En la parte final, el artículo explora las implicaciones de considerar el deporte como un recurso común cultural y concluye argumentando que los recursos comunes son un tema ejemplar para una sociología pública del deporte.Neste artigo, um exame dos recursos comuns tradicionais é seguido de uma explicação sobre como as pessoas têm resistido ao seu cercamento – com referência específica às lutas para preservar o espaço voltado à recreação. A seguir, examino a pesquisa recente sobre os recursos comuns e a identificação cada vez maior de outros recursos desse tipo. Na parte final, o artigo explora as implicações de se considerar o esporte como um recurso comum de caráter cultural e conclui argumentando que os recursos comuns são um tema exemplar para uma sociologia pública do esporte

Violence brief interventions: a rapid review

Provision of a Violence Brief Intervention (VBI) to young men undergoing treatment for a violent injury may represent a teachable moment for the prevention of future interpersonal violence in Scotland. Prior to intervention design, a rapid review of the research literature was necessary to examine existing programmes. After title and abstract screening, eight distinct VBIs were identified from full texts. Whilst none of the programmes were a perfect match for our intervention goals, they did demonstrate the potential effectiveness of brief interventions for violence prevention at both cognitive and behavioural levels. Key themes of successful interventions included brief motivational interviewing as an effective method of engaging with at-risk participants and encouraging change, the utility of social norms approaches for correcting peer norm misperceptions, the usefulness of working with victims of violence in medical settings (particularly oral and maxillofacial surgeries), the importance of addressing the role of alcohol after violent injury, the advantages of a computer-therapist hybrid model of delivery, and the need for adequate follow-up evaluation as part of a randomised control trial. This information has been used to design a VBI which is currently under evaluation

Interculturalism and Physical Cultural Diversity in the Greater Toronto Area

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is one of the most multicultural communities in the world. Frequently, this description is based on ethnic, linguistic, and culinary diversity. Physical cultural diversity, such as different sports, martial arts, forms of dance, exercise systems, and other physical games and activities, remains ignored and understudied. Based on a living database of the GTA’s physical cultural diversity, this study identifies the trajectories of the lifecycle of activities that have been introduced into the GTA’s physical culture by immigrants. These pathways differ based on whether the activity is offered in a separate setting, where individuals may be participating with other immigrants of the same ethnocultural group, or mixed settings, where people are participating with people from outside of their ethnocultural group. We argue that the diversity and the lifecycle trajectories of physical cultural forms in the GTA serve as evidence of interculturalism and the contribution by immigrants to the social and cultural life of Canada

DNA as Evidence: Viewing Science through the Prism of the Law

In this article, we analyze a problem related to DNA evidence that is likely to be of great and increasing significance in the near future. This is the problem of whether, and how, to present evidence that the suspect has been identified through a DNA database search. In our view, the two well-known reports on DNA evidence issued by the National Research Council (NRC) have been badly mistaken in their analysis of this problem. The mistakes are significant because the reports have carried great authority with American courts; moreover, the DNA Advisory Board of the FBI has endorsed the second report on this issue. We will also offer some reflections on the habits of mind, of both lawyers and statisticians, that may have led to this result

DNA Database Searches and the Legal Consumption of Scientific Evidence

DNA evidence has transformed the proof of identity in criminal litigation, but it has also introduced daunting problems of statistical analysis into the process. In this Article, we analyze a problem related to DNA evidence that is likely to be of great and increasing significance in the near future. This is the problem of whether, and how, to present evidence that the suspect has been identified through a DNA database search. In our view, the two well-known reports on DNA evidence issued by the National Research Council ( NRC ), each of which has carried great authority with the American courts on various issues, have been badly mistaken in their analysis of this problem. Similar errors affect the analyses of scholars who have supported the NRC reports. We will also offer some reflections on the habits of mind, of both lawyers and statisticians, that may have led to this result. Finally, we will suggest an approach that legal decision-makers might take in general with respect to scientific and statistically-based evidence to avoid this kind of difficulty. This approach is significantly different from that which pervades the Supreme Court\u27s decisions in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and its recent sequel, General Electric Co. v. Joiner, as well as their precursor, Frye v. United States. And the suggested approach sheds a helpful light on a case now pending before the Court, Carmichael v. Samyang Tire, Inc
