AnĂĄlisis de las caracterĂsticas especĂficas del Licor de Pitaya
This Masters' Thesis Defense is an experimental study for the determination of volatile
compounds in Pitaya liquors, and serves as a continuation of a previous experimental study, in
which the liquorsâ elaboration methodology was determined using the different Pitaya varieties.
The samples of the liquors obtained in that study will be analyzed in the present study.
The Legislation applicable to liquors has been studied and there are no specific requirements
regarding the volatile compounds content. It is expected that the results obtained in the liquors
will be similar to cane distillate used in its elaboration. However, it is estimated that formation of
these compounds may occur during the liquorsâ maturation period, due to alterations and side
reactions which have resulted in the liquorsâ oxidation.
The main goal is to determine the volatile compounds in the available liquorsâ samples, as well
as the analysis of the obtained results and the comparison with those obtained in the cane distillate
used in the maceration. Volatile compounds were determined by gas chromatography. The
alcohol content/alcoholic grade/degree of the liquors was also determined using the same
technique. Finally, a statistical analysis of the results was carried out in order to study the behavior
of the variables and their relation with the characteristics of liquorsâ elaboration method

Contemporary use of cefazolin for MSSA infective endocarditis: analysis of a national prospective cohort
Objectives: This study aimed to assess the real use of cefazolin for methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) infective endocarditis (IE) in the Spanish National Endocarditis Database (GAMES) and to compare it with antistaphylococcal penicillin (ASP). Methods: Prospective cohort study with retrospective analysis of a cohort of MSSA IE treated with cloxacillin and/or cefazolin. Outcomes assessed were relapse; intra-hospital, overall, and endocarditis-related mortality; and adverse events. Risk of renal toxicity with each treatment was evaluated separately. Results: We included 631 IE episodes caused by MSSA treated with cloxacillin and/or cefazolin. Antibiotic treatment was cloxacillin, cefazolin, or both in 537 (85%), 57 (9%), and 37 (6%) episodes, respectively. Patients treated with cefazolin had significantly higher rates of comorbidities (median Charlson Index 7, P <0.01) and previous renal failure (57.9%, P <0.01). Patients treated with cloxacillin presented higher rates of septic shock (25%, PÂ =Â 0.033) and new-onset or worsening renal failure (47.3%, PÂ =Â 0.024) with significantly higher rates of in-hospital mortality (38.5%, PÂ =Â 0.017). One-year IE-related mortality and rate of relapses were similar between treatment groups. None of the treatments were identified as risk or protective factors. Conclusion: Our results suggest that cefazolin is a valuable option for the treatment of MSSA IE, without differences in 1-year mortality or relapses compared with cloxacillin, and might be considered equally effective
Coherent J/Ï photoproduction in ultra-peripheral PbâPb collisions at âsNN=2.76Â TeV
The ALICE Collaboration has made the first measurement at the LHC of J/Ï photoproduction in ultra-peripheral PbâPb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV. The J/Ï is identified via its dimuon decay in the forward rapidity region with the muon spectrometer for events where the hadronic activity is required to be minimal. The analysis is based on an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 55 ÎŒbâ1. The cross section for coherent J/Ï production in the rapidity interval â3.6<y<â2.6 is measured to be dÏJ/Ïcoh/dy=1.00±0.18(stat)â0.26+0.24(syst) mb. The result is compared to theoretical models for coherent J/Ï production and found to be in good agreement with those models which include nuclear gluon shadowing
Evolution over Time of Ventilatory Management and Outcome of Patients with Neurologic Diseaseâ
OBJECTIVES: To describe the changes in ventilator management over time in patients with neurologic disease at ICU admission and to estimate factors associated with 28-day hospital mortality. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of three prospective, observational, multicenter studies. SETTING: Cohort studies conducted in 2004, 2010, and 2016. PATIENTS: Adult patients who received mechanical ventilation for more than 12 hours. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Among the 20,929 patients enrolled, we included 4,152 (20%) mechanically ventilated patients due to different neurologic diseases. Hemorrhagic stroke and brain trauma were the most common pathologies associated with the need for mechanical ventilation. Although volume-cycled ventilation remained the preferred ventilation mode, there was a significant (p < 0.001) increment in the use of pressure support ventilation. The proportion of patients receiving a protective lung ventilation strategy was increased over time: 47% in 2004, 63% in 2010, and 65% in 2016 (p < 0.001), as well as the duration of protective ventilation strategies: 406 days per 1,000 mechanical ventilation days in 2004, 523 days per 1,000 mechanical ventilation days in 2010, and 585 days per 1,000 mechanical ventilation days in 2016 (p < 0.001). There were no differences in the length of stay in the ICU, mortality in the ICU, and mortality in hospital from 2004 to 2016. Independent risk factors for 28-day mortality were age greater than 75 years, Simplified Acute Physiology Score II greater than 50, the occurrence of organ dysfunction within first 48 hours after brain injury, and specific neurologic diseases such as hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke, and brain trauma. CONCLUSIONS: More lung-protective ventilatory strategies have been implemented over years in neurologic patients with no effect on pulmonary complications or on survival. We found several prognostic factors on mortality such as advanced age, the severity of the disease, organ dysfunctions, and the etiology of neurologic disease
Ds+ meson production at central rapidity in protonâproton collisions at âs=7 TeV
The pT-differential inclusive production cross section of the prompt charm-strange meson Ds+ in the rapidity range |y|<0.5 was measured in protonâproton collisions at s=7 TeV at the LHC using the ALICE detector. The analysis was performed on a data sample of 2.98Ă108 events collected with a minimum-bias trigger. The corresponding integrated luminosity is Lint=4.8 nbâ1. Reconstructing the decay Ds+âÏÏ+, with ÏâKâK+, and its charge conjugate, about 480 Ds± mesons were counted, after selection cuts, in the transverse momentum range 2<pT<12 GeV/c. The results are compared with predictions from models based on perturbative QCD. The ratios of the cross sections of four D meson species (namely D0, D+, Dâ+ and Ds+) were determined both as a function of pT and integrated over pT after extrapolating to full pT range, together with the strangeness suppression factor in charm fragmentation. The obtained values are found to be compatible within uncertainties with those measured by other experiments in e+eâ, ep and pp interactions at various centre-of-mass energies
Heavy flavour decay muon production at forward rapidity in protonâproton collisions at âs=7 TeV
The production of muons from heavy flavour decays is measured at forward rapidity in protonâproton collisions at âs=7 TeV collected with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The analysis is carried out on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity Lint=16.5 nbâ1. The transverse momentum and rapidity differential production cross sections of muons from heavy flavour decays are measured in the rapidity range 2.5<y<4, over the transverse momentum range 2<pt<12 GeV/c. The results are compared to predictions based on perturbative QCD calculations
Suppression of charged particle production at large transverse momentum in central PbâPb collisions at âsNN=2.76 TeV
Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of primary charged particles in PbâPb collisions at âsNN=2.76 TeV have been measured by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. The data are presented for central and peripheral collisions, corresponding to 0â5% and 70â80% of the hadronic PbâPb cross section. The measured charged particle spectra in |η|<0.8 and 0.3<pT<20 GeV/c are compared to the expectation in pp collisions at the same sNN, scaled by the number of underlying nucleonânucleon collisions. The comparison is expressed in terms of the nuclear modification factor RAA. The result indicates only weak medium effects (RAAâ0.7) in peripheral collisions. In central collisions, RAA reaches a minimum of about 0.14 at pT=6â7 GeV/c and increases significantly at larger pT. The measured suppression of high-pT particles is stronger than that observed at lower collision energies, indicating that a very dense medium is formed in central PbâPb collisions at the LHC
