Deoxytrifluoromethylthiolation and Selenylation of Alcohols by Using Benzothiazolium Reagents

    Get PDF
Aliphatic compounds substituted with medicinally important trifluoromethylthio (SCF3) and trifluoromethylselenyl (SeCF3) groups were synthesized directly from alcohols by using the new benzothiazolium salts BT-SCF3 and BT-SeCF3. These bench-stable fluorine-containing reagents are facile to use and can be prepared in two steps from non-fluorinated heteroaromatic starting materials. The metal-free deoxytrifluoromethylthiolation process using BT-SCF3 proceeds under mild conditions and the similarly efficient trifluoromethylselenylation reactions using BT-SeCF3 are, to the best of our knowledge, the first reported examples of this transformation

Strain analysis of multiferroic BiFeO3-CoFe2O4 nanostructures by Raman scattering

We report a Raman scattering investigation of columnar BiFeO3-CoFe2O4 (BFO-CFO) epitaxial thin film nanostructures, where BFO pillars are embedded in a CFO matrix. The feasibility of a strain analysis is illustrated through an investigation of two nanostructures with different BFO-CFO ratios. We show that the CFO matrix presents the same strain state in both nanostructures, while the strain state of the BFO pillars depends on the BFO/CFO ratio with an increasing tensile strain along the out-of-plane direction with decreasing BFO content. Our results demonstrate that Raman scattering allows monitoring strain states in complex 3D multiferroic pillar/matrix composites.Comment: revised version submitted to Appl. Phys. Let

Oscillatory and asymptotic behaviour of a neutral differential equation with oscillating coefficients

    Get PDF
In this paper, we obtain sufficient conditions so that every solution of (y(t)i=1npi(t)y(δi(t)))+i=1mqi(t)y(σi(t))=f(t) \big(y(t)- \sum_{i=1}^n p_i(t) y(\delta_i(t))\big)'+\sum_{i=1}^m q_i(t) y(\sigma_i(t)) = f(t) oscillates or tends to zero as tt \to \infty. Here the coefficients pi(t),qi(t)p_i(t), q_i(t) and the forcing term f(t)f(t) are allowed to oscillate; such oscillation condition in all coefficients is very rare in the literature. Furthermore, this paper provides an answer to the open problem 2.8.3 in [7, p. 57]. Suitable examples are included to illustrate our results

    Hypospadias

Objective. The great possibility of variations in the clinical presentation of hypospadia, makes its therapy challenging. This has led to the development of a number of techniques for hypospadia repair. This article assesses past and present concepts and operative techniques with the aim of broadening our understanding of this malformation. Materials and Methods. The article not only reviews hypospadia in general with its development and clinical presentation as well as historical and current concepts in hypospadiologie on the basis of available literature, but it is also based on our own clinical experience in the repair of this malformation. Results and Conclusion. The fact that there are great variations in the presentation and extent of malformations existent makes every hypospadia individual and a proposal of a universal comprehensive algorithm for hypospadia repair difficult. The Snodgrass technique has found wide popularity for the repair of distal hypospadias. As far as proximal hypospadias are concerned, their repair is more challenging because it not only involves urethroplasty, but can also, in some cases, fulfil the dimensions of a complex genital reconstruction. Due to the development of modern operating materials and an improvement in current surgical techniques, there has been a significant decrease in the complication rates. Nonetheless, there still is room and, therefore, need for further improvement in this field

Fault and magmatic interaction within Iceland's western rift over the last 9kyr

    Get PDF
We present high-resolution 'Chirp' sub-bottom profiler data from Thingvallavatn, a lake in Iceland's western rift zone. These data are combined with stratigraphic constraints from sediment cores to show that movement on normal faults since 9 ka are temporally correlated with magmatic events, indicating that movements were controlled by episodic dyke intrusion. Sediment depo-centres and the focus of subsidence migrated westwards over 3-4 kyr towards the locus of subsequent brittle failure. We interpret this subsidence as related to dyke intrusion a few km along strike, originating from the Hengill volcanic system, which occurred prior to major dyking, faulting and subsidence within the lake at 1.9 ka

Benzothiazolium salts as reagents for the deoxygenative perfluoroalkylthiolation of alcohols

    Get PDF
A series of 2-(perfluoroalkylthio)benzothiazolium (BT-SRF) salts have been synthesized that serve as convenient sources of hitherto underexplored perfluoroalkylthiolate anions. An investigation of their reactivity in a deoxygenative nucleophilic substitution reaction led to the development of an unprecedented process that provides pentafluoroethyl and heptafluoropropyl thioethers directly from readily available alcohols

A 500 year sediment lake record of anthropogenic and natural inputs to Windermere (English Lake District) using double-spike lead isotopes, radiochronology, and sediment microanalysis

    Get PDF
A high-resolution record of pollution is preserved in recent sediments from Windermere, the largest lake in the English Lake District. Data derived from X-ray core scanning (validated against wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence), radiochronological techniques (210Pb and 137Cs) and ultrahigh precision, double-spike mass spectrometry for lead isotopes are combined to decipher the anthropogenic inputs to the lake. The sediment record suggests that while most element concentrations have been stable, there has been a significant increase in lead, zinc, and copper concentrations since the 1930s. Lead isotope down-core variations identify three major contributory sources of anthropogenic (industrial) lead, comprising gasoline lead, coal combustion lead (most likely source is coal-fired steam ships), and lead derived from Carboniferous Pb–Zn mineralization (mining activities). Periods of metal workings do not correlate with peaks in heavy metals due to the trapping efficiency of up-system lakes in the catchment. Heavy metal increases could be due to flood-induced metal inwash after the cessation of mining and the weathering of bedrock in the catchment. The combination of sediment analysis techniques used provides new insights into the pollutant depositional history of Windermere and could be similarly applied to other lake systems to determine the timing and scale of anthropogenic inputs

Yttria-stabilized zirconia/SrTiO_(3) oxide heteroepitaxial interface with symmetry discontinuity

    Get PDF
We show that yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) films deposited on structurally dissimilar SrTiO_(3)(110) substrates exhibit two-dimensional layer-by-layer growth. We observed that, up to a thickness of about 15 nm, the square (001) basal plane of the cubic YSZ grows epitaxially on the rectangular (110) crystallographic plane of SrTiO3 substrates, with [110]YSZ(001)//[001]SrTiO_(3)(110) epitaxial relationship. Thus, the heterointerface presents symmetry discontinuity between the YSZ(001) film and the lower surface symmetry SrTiO_(3)(110) substrate. Beyond this specific case, we envisage similar approaches to develop other innovative oxide interfaces showing similar crystal symmetry discontinuities
