    Factors Relating to Managerial Stereotypes: The Role of Gender of the Employee and the Manager and Management Gender Ratio

    Several studies have shown that the traditional stereotype of a "good" manager being masculine and male still exists. The recent changes in the proportion of women and female managers in organizations could affect these two managerial stereotypes, leading to a stronger preference for feminine characteristics and female leaders. This study examines if the gender of an employee, the gender of the manager, and the management gender ratio in an organization are related to employees' managerial stereotypes. 3229 respondents working in various organizations completed an electronic questionnaire. The results confirm our hypotheses that, although the general stereotype of a manager is masculine and although most prefer a man as a manager, female employees, employees with a female manager, and employees working in an organization with a high percentage of female managers, have a stronger preference for feminine characteristics of managers and for female managers. Moreover, we find that proximal variables are much stronger predictors of these preferences than more distal variables. Our study suggests that managerial stereotypes could change as a result of personal experiences and changes in the organizational context. The results imply that increasing the proportion of female managers is an effective way to overcome managerial stereotyping.     Secondary students' values and perceptions of science-related careers: responses to vignette-based scenarios

    There has been concern about the attractiveness of science-based careers to many adolescent learners, and it has been suggested that school science may not always recognise or engage personal values that are important to young people in making life choices. The present study discusses interview comments made by upper secondary level students in England when 15 young people were asked to give their personal responses to brief vignettes describing scientific careers. Using an interview-about-scenarios approach, the students were asked about whether they would feel comfortable working in the scientific careers represented. The career areas were purposefully selected because they might be considered to potentially raise issues in relation to personal values or commitments that some students might hold. A range of student perceptions relating to the mooted careers were elicited (positive, negative and indifferent), but all of the participants raised issues that impacted on the acceptability or attractiveness of at least one of the mooted scientific careers, in terms of aspects of their own personal beliefs and values systems. It is recommended that teachers and career advisors should be aware of the range of value-related considerations that influence student views of science-related careers and should consider exploring aspects of science-based careers that link to values commonly shared by young people. This exploratory study also offers indications for directions for further research exploring how learners' value systems impact upon their perceptions of science and scientific work

    Identification of calcium-binding proteins associated with the human sperm plasma membrane

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The precise composition of the human sperm plasma membrane, the molecular interactions that define domain specific functions, and the regulation of membrane associated proteins during the capacitation process, still remain to be fully understood. Here, we investigated the repertoire of calcium-regulated proteins associated with the human sperm plasma membrane.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Surface specific radioiodination was combined with two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, a 45Ca-overlay assay, computer assisted image analysis and mass spectrometry to identify calcium-binding proteins exposed on the human sperm surface.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Nine acidic 45Ca-binding sperm proteins were excised from stained preparative 2D gels and identified by mass spectrometry. Five of the calcium binding proteins; HSPA2 (HSP70-1), HSPA5 (Bip), HYOU1 (ORP150), serum amyloid P-component (SAP) and protein kinase C substrate 80K-H (80K-H) were found to be accessible to Iodo-Bead catalyzed 125I-labelling on the surface of intact human sperm. Agglutination and immunofluorescence analysis confirmed that SAP is situated on the plasma membrane of intact, motile sperm as well as permeabilized cells. Western blot analysis showed increased phosphorylation of human sperm 80K-H protein following in vitro capacitation. This is the first demonstration of the 80K-H protein in a mammalian sperm.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The presence of SAP on the surface of mature sperm implies that SAP has a physiological role in reproduction, which is thought to be in the removal of spermatozoa from the female genital tract via phagocytosis. Since 80K-H is a Ca2+-sensor recently implicated in the regulation of both inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor and transient receptor potential (TRP) cation channel activities, its detection in sperm represents the first direct signaling link between PKC and store-operated calcium channels identified in human sperm.</p

    Gender gap in parental leave intentions: Evidence from 37 countries

    This is the final version. Available from Wiley via the DOI in this record. Despite global commitments and efforts, a gender-based division of paid and unpaid work persists. To identify how psychological factors, national policies, and the broader sociocultural context contribute to this inequality, we assessed parental-leave intentions in young adults (18–30years old) planning to have children (N = 13,942; 8,880 identified as women; 5,062 identified as men) across 37 countries that varied in parental-leave policies and societal gender equality. In all countries, women intended to take longer leave than men. National parental-leave policies and women’s political representation partially explained cross-national variations in the gender gap. Gender gaps in leave intentions were paradoxically larger in countries with more gender-egalitarian parental-leave policies (i.e., longer leave available to both fathers and mothers). Interestingly, this cross-national variation in the gender gap was driven by cross-national variations in women’s (rather than men’s) leave intentions. Financially generous leave and gender-egalitarian policies (linked to men’s higher uptake in prior research) were not associated with leave intentions in men. Rather, men’s leave intentions were related to their individual gender attitudes. Leave intentions were inversely related to career ambitions.     Analysis of a human sperm CD52 glycoform in primates: Identification of an animal model for immunocontraceptive vaccine development

    Sperm agglutination antigen-1 (SAGA-1) is a human male reproductive tract glycoform of CD52. Unique modification of CD52 N-linked oligosaccharide chains in the epididymis and vas deferens results in the appearance of a carbohydrate epitope that is localized over the entire surface of human spermatozoa. SAGA-1 was characterized by the sperm-inhibitory murine monoclonal antibody (mAb) S19, and it is the target antigen of a human mAb (H6-3C4) associated with antibody-mediated infertility. Collectively, sperm surface localization, antibody inhibition of sperm function, and potential reproductive-tissue specificity identify SAGA-1 as an attractive candidate contraceptive immunogen. To establish an animal model for the study of SAGA-1 in immunologic infertility and immunocontraceptive development, we investigated the appearance of the S19 carbohydrate epitope in nonhuman primates. The S19 mAb demonstrated little to no immunoreactivity by Western blot analysis with protein extracts of spermatozoa from the baboon, marmoset, bonnet, cynomolgus, and pigtailed macaques. Immunohistochemical analysis identified CD52 in the bonnet monkey epididymis; however, the N-linked carbohydrate moiety recognized by the S19 mAb, and unique to SAGA-1, was absent. In contrast, the S19 carbohydrate epitope was identified in chimpanzee sperm extracts by Western blot analysis and in chimpanzee epididymal tissue sections by immunohistochemical analysis, indicating that it is conserved in this close relative of the human. Chimpanzee testis, seminal vesicle, and prostate do not express the S19 epitope. Although anti-CD52 immunoreactivity was identified in the spleen, the carbohydrate moiety recognized by the S19 mAb was absent, corroborating data in the human that demonstrated tissue-specific glycosylation of sperm CD52. Immunofluorescent analysis indicated that the chimpanzee homologue of sperm CD52 was present over the entire spermatozoon. In addition, the S19 mAb agglutinated chimpanzee spermatozoa in a manner similar to the effect observed on human spermatozoa. These data indicate that the distinctive carbohydrate moiety of human sperm CD52 is present in the chimpanzee, and they identify the chimpanzee as the most appropriate primate model to study the potential of this unique CD52 glycoform as a contraceptive immunogen
