    Nonlinear Compton scattering in ultra-short laser pulses

    A detailed analysis of the photon emission spectra of an electron scattered by a laser pulse containing only very few cycles of the carrying electromagnetic field is presented. The analysis is performed in the framework of strong-field quantum electrodynamics, with the laser field taken into account exactly in the calculations. We consider different emission regimes depending on the laser intensity, placing special emphasis on the regime of one-cycle beams and of high laser intensities, where the emission spectra depend nonperturbatively on the laser intensity. In this regime we in particular present an accurate stationary phase analysis of the integrals that are shown to determine the computed emission spectra. The emission spectra show significant differences with respect to those in a long pulsed or monochromatic laser field: the emission lines obtained here are much broader and, more important, no dressing of the electron mass is observed.Comment: 31 pages, 15 figure

    Building Consensus. An introduction to a rhetorical approach

    The contemporary debate on democracy shows two points of view: the \u201cdeliberative\u201d one and the \u201cagonistic\u201d one. The first one is related to the classical tradition that considers Habermas as its reference point. It emphasizes the role of rational deliberation as a means to produce a legitimate and binding consensus. In contrast, the second one draws its inspiration from C. Schmitt, and considers conflict and disagreement as unavoidable conditions of democratic life. Despite their obvious differences, these two theoretical models have a conception of rhetoric in common that is subjected to, or at least excluded from, the full exercise of argumentative rationality. We propose an interpretation of rhetoric that includes the logical-argumentative dimension in the rhetorical domain is possible. In this way, the recovery of rhetoric, considered both as a practice and as a theory of persuasive speech, may shed light on the role of discursive processes in building consensus, and thus may allow a revision of the dialectical tension between the pairs of concepts that the debate tends to focus on: normative/descriptive, rational/irrational, agreement/conflict

    Quasiclassical representation of the Volkov propagator and the tadpole diagram in a plane wave

    The solution of the Dirac equation in the presence of an arbitrary plane wave, corresponding to the so-called Volkov states, has provided an enormous insight in strong-field QED. In [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{103}, 076011 (2021)] a new "fully quasiclassical" representation of the Volkov states has been found, which is equivalent to the one known in the literature but which more transparently shows the quasiclassical nature of the quantum dynamics of an electron in a plane-wave field. Here, we derive the corresponding expression of the propagator by constructing it using the fully quasiclassical form of the Volkov states. The found expression allows one, together with the fully quasiclassical expression of the Volkov states, to compute probabilities in strong-field QED in an intense plane wave by manipulating only 2-by-2 rather than 4-by-4 Dirac matrices as in the usual approach. Moreover, apart from the exponential functions featuring the classical action of an electron in a plane wave, the fully quasiclassical Volkov propagator only depends on the electron kinetic four-momentum in the plane wave, which is a gauge-invariant quantity. Finally, we also compute the tadpole diagram in a plane wave starting from the Volkov propagator and we show that, although it is divergent, its contribution can be always absorbed via a renormalization of the external field

    Determining the carrier-envelope phase of intense few-cycle laser pulses

    The electromagnetic radiation emitted by an ultra-relativistic accelerated electron is extremely sensitive to the precise shape of the field driving the electron. We show that the angular distribution of the photons emitted by an electron via multiphoton Compton scattering off an intense (I>10^{20}\;\text{W/cm^2}), few-cycle laser pulse provides a direct way of determining the carrier-envelope phase of the driving laser field. Our calculations take into account exactly the laser field, include relativistic and quantum effects and are in principle applicable to presently available and future foreseen ultra-strong laser facilities.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Low field magnetotransport in strained Si/SiGe cavities

    Low field magnetotransport revealing signatures of ballistic transport effects in strained Si/SiGe cavities is investigated. We fabricated strained Si/SiGe cavities by confining a high mobility Si/SiGe 2DEG in a bended nanowire geometry defined by electron-beam lithography and reactive ion etching. The main features observed in the low temperature magnetoresistance curves are the presence of a zero-field magnetoresistance peak and of an oscillatory structure at low fields. By adopting a simple geometrical model we explain the oscillatory structure in terms of electron magnetic focusing. A detailed examination of the zero-field peak lineshape clearly shows deviations from the predictions of ballistic weak localization theory.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review B, 25 pages, 7 figure

    Nonlinear double Compton scattering in the full quantum regime

    A detailed analysis of the process of two photon emission by an electron scattered from a high-intensity laser pulse is presented. The calculations are performed in the framework of strong-field QED and include exactly the presence of the laser field, described as a plane wave. We investigate the full quantum regime of interaction, where photon recoil plays an essential role in the emission process, and substantially alters the emitted photon spectra as compared to those in previously-studied regimes. We provide a semiclassical explanation for such differences, based on the possibility of assigning a trajectory to the electron in the laser field before and after each quantum photon emission. Our numerical results indicate the feasibility of investigating experimentally the full quantum regime of nonlinear double Compton scattering with already available plasma-based electron accelerator and laser technology.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Pre-test CFD simulations of the NACIE-UP BFPS test section

    The present paper is focused on the CFD pre-test analysis and design of the new experimental facility Blocked Fuel Pin bundle Simulator (BFPS) that will be installed into the NACIE-UP (NAtural CIrculation Experiment-UPgrade) facility located at the ENEA Brasimone Research Center (Italy). The BFPS test section will carry out suitable experiments to fully investigate different flow blockage regimes in a 19 fuel pin bundle providing experimental data in support of the development of the ALFRED (Advanced Lead-cooled Fast Reactor European Demonstrator) LFR DEMO. The geometrical domain of the fuel pin bundle simulator was designed to reproduce the geometrical features of ALFRED, e.g. the external wrapper in the active region and the spacer grids. Pre-tests calculations were carried out by applying accurate boundary conditions; the conjugate heat transfer in the clad is also considered. The blockages investigated are internal blockages of different extensions and in different locations: central sub-channel blockage, corner sub-channel blockage, edge sub-channel blockage, one sector blockage, and two-sector blockage. RANS simulations were carried out adopting the ANSYS CFX commercial code with the laminar sublayer resolved by the mesh resolution. The loci of the peak temperatures and their width as predicted by the CFD simulations are used for determining the location of the pin bundle instrumentation. The CFD pre-test analysis allowed also investigating the temperature distribution in the clad to operate the test section safely

    Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections and enteric protozoa among homosexual men in western Sicily (south Italy)

    Introduction. In recent years an increase in the number of sexu- ally transmitted infections (STIs) in men who have sex with men (MSM) has been reported in different industrialised countries. Because few epidemiological data on the STIs/MSM population in Sicily are available, a survey was conducted to assess the preva- lence of STIs/enteric protozoa and risky sexual behaviours among MSM in western Sicily. Methods. In 2010, 74 MSM with median age of 30 years old, were recruited via networks. All participants to the study were interviewed by anonymous self-administered questionnaire in order to collect social/demographic information, clinic data and STI-related risky sexual behaviours. After completing the ques- tionnaire, blood samples were collected to determine HIV, HCV, HHV8 and Treponema pallidum antibodies; presence of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium parvum was also investigated in faecal samples by immunofluorescence assay. Results. HIV, HHV8, T. pallidum and Giardia prevalence were 8.1%, 16.2%, 21.6% and 16.4% respectively; all patients were negative for HCV and Cryptosporidium infections. The median values of sexual anal intercourse and oral sex per week were 2 and 1, respectively. 7% of participants always had unprotected anal sex, 50.7% sometimes used condom during sexual anal inter- course and 42.3% always had protected anal sex. All MSM-HIV+ and 7 (43.7%) syphilis seropositives were unaware of their own infection. Discussion. MSM in western Sicily are a high risk group for important STIs. It seems necessary that continuous interventions for preventing HIV/AIDS and other STIs and for improving the level of knowledge of symptoms are needed
