    Age-Related Needs of Community College Students

    The literature of adult education commonly suggests that older learners have a distinct set of needs and a unique mode of learning that ought to be honoured by educational institutions; other observers note that education is a process whose generic elements are not age-related. Capilano College, with a strong com- mitment to mature learners as part of its community orientation, surveyed its student population by age grouping to determine the extent to which significant, substantive differences in the self-perceived needs of different age groupings were evident. The survey revealed that, although there were several distinguishing characteristics between students below and above age 25, younger and older students share a large common set of needs; older students seem to have a greater number of needs and appear to feel them more acutely.Généralement, la documentation sur l'éducation permanente semble indiquer que les étudiants adultes éprouvent des besoins distincts et possèdent un mode d'apprentissage qui leur est particulier et dont les institutions d'enseignement devraient tenir compte. D'autres observateurs remarquent que l'instruction est un processus dont les éléments génériques n'ont rien à voir avec le facteur-âge. Le Collège Capilano dans la poursuite de son engagement envers les étudiants adultes et envers la communauté qu'il dessert a fait une étude de sa population étudiante par groupe d'âge afin de déterminer dans quelle mesure il y avait évidence de différences significatives dans les besoins perçus par les différents groupes d'âges.     Blood lactate clearance after maximal exercise depends on active recovery intensity

    AIM: High-intensity exercise is time-limited by onset of fatigue, marked by accumulation of blood lactate. This is accentuated at maximal, all-out exercise that rapidly accumulates high blood lactate. The optimal active recovery intensity for clearing lactate after such maximal, all-out exercise remains unknown. Thus, we studied the intensity-dependence of lactate clearance during active recovery after maximal exercise.<p></p> METHODS: We constructed a standardized maximal, all-out treadmill exercise protocol that predictably lead to voluntary exhaustion and blood lactate concentration >10 mM. Next, subjects ran series of all-out bouts that increased blood lactate concentration to 11.5±0.2 mM, followed by recovery exercises ranging 0% (passive)-100% of the lactate threshold.<p></p> RESULTS: Repeated measurements showed faster lactate clearance during active versus passive recovery (P<0.01), and that active recovery at 60-100% of lactate threshold was more efficient for lactate clearance than lower intensity recovery (P<0.05). Active recovery at 80% of lactate threshold had the highest rate of and shortest time constant for lactate clearance (P<0.05), whereas the response during the other intensities was graded (100%=60%>40%>passive recovery, P<0.05).<p></p> CONCLUSION: Active recovery after maximal all-out exercise clears accumulated blood lactate faster than passive recovery in an intensity-dependent manner, with maximum clearance occurring at active recovery of 80% of lactate threshold

    Impressions of Psychotherapists’ Offices: Do Therapists and Clients Agree?

    Do therapists and potential clients similarly evaluate offices of practicing clinicians?Furnishings in a therapist\u27s office can create a welcoming environment, yet little research examines perceptions of such furnishings, leading to the focus of this research. In a previous study with 30 color photographs of psychotherapists\u27 offices, students favored clinical settings that were soft, personalized, and orderly (Nasar & Devlin, 2011). Using the same 30 photographs, the present studies had 32 licensed psychotherapists evaluate the quality of care, comfort in the setting, and therapist qualities they expected clients to experience in each office. The judgments that therapists thought clients would make had high correlations withthe earlier judgments of students; each group\u27s composite evaluation improved significantly as the office became softer and more orderly.     Secular Changes in the Postcranial Skeleton of American Whites

    Secular change in height has been extensively investigated, but size and shape of the postcranial skeleton much less so. The availability of large, documented collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century skeletons makes it possible to examine changes in skeletal structure over the past 150 years. We examined secular changes in long bone lengths and proportions, their allometric relationship to stature, and cross- sectional properties of long bone shafts. Bone measurements and stature were organized into 10-year birth cohorts, ranging from 1840 to 1989. Variation among cohorts was tested by one-way ANOVA, and secular trend was examined visually by plotting mean measurements by birth decade. Allometry was examined by regressing log bone lengths onto log stature, using least squares regression. Allometry was also examined using the geometric mean of log bone lengths as the size variable. All bone lengths and stature showed positive secular change. Stature and the distal long bones showed the most pronounced changes. Proportions also changed, as revealed by the brachial and crural indices. Both indices increased, but the brachial index change was the most pronounced. Allometric relationships suggest that brachial index changes result from positive allometry of the radius and negative allometry of the humerus. Similar but less marked allometric relationships were found in the tibia and femur. Long bone shaft properties changed in the following ways: femur midshafts and tibia shafts at the nutrient foramen became more mediolaterally narrowed, and the femur became more mediolaterally thickened at the subtrochanteric level, approaching platymeria. All major long bones became more gracile. These remarkable changes in the postcranial skeleton are a response to the unparalleled changes in the environment in which modern Americans now live.     K-State Libraries Usability Team report: self-checkout machine mini test

    K-State Libraries employs a patron-centered approach to information finding and resource sharing that makes our online and physical presence easy to navigate, sought out by patrons, valid in content, and reliable in currency of information. The primary outcome of this usability test was to determine the optimal placement of two self-checkout machines on the main floor of Hale Library, the campus’ largest library. This test was conducted during the summer of 2014 and, again at mid-fall of the same year when checkout totals were the greatest. We found that the majority of patrons who participated in the test had used the self-checkout machines before, or were at least aware of their availability in Hale Library. Heat maps were created from survey feedback to identify the preferred locations for the two self-check machines

    Kinetics of membrane micellization by the hydrophobic polyelectrolyte poly( 2-ethylacrylic acid)

    Rates of pH-dependent micellization of multilamellar vesicles by the hydrophobic polyelectrolyte poly(2-ethylacrylic acid) (PEAA) have been measured turbidometrically. This polymer shows a strong pH-dependence in its affinity for phospholipid membranes, binding in increasing amounts as pH is lowered and ultimately solubilizing membranes to form mixed micelles (Tirrell, Takigawa and Seki (1985) Ann. N.Y. Acad. Sci. 446, 237). The rate of solubilization of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) vesicle suspensions by PEAA increases approximately linearly with reductions in pH below a threshold at pH 6.55. Interestingly, negatively-charged dipalmitoylphosphatidylglycerol membranes showed qualitatively similar behavior in the presence of PEAA, and incorporation of 10% or 20% dipalmitoylphosphatidic acid in DPPC membranes did not affect solubilization rates, demonstrating that membrane charge is not an important factor in determining micellization kinetics. Micellization of DPPC and dimyrstoylphosphatidylcholine membranes occurs most rapidly at their respective gel-liquid crystalline transition temperatures (Tm); the rate enhancement is correlated with a peak in the temperature-dependent binding of a fluorescently-modified PEAA in slightly alkaline solutions in which no micellization is observed. The lateral compressibility of the membrane, which has a similar peak at T_m, is proposed to be an important determinant of the rate and extent of polymer adsorption, and consequently of the rate of micellization

    Breakfast and exercise contingently affect postprandial metabolism and energy balance in physically active males

    The present study examined the impact of breakfast and exercise on postprandial metabolism, appetite and macronutrient balance. A sample of twelve (blood variables n 11) physically active males completed four trials in a randomised, crossover design comprising a continued overnight fast followed by: (1) rest without breakfast (FR); (2) exercise without breakfast (FE); (3) breakfast consumption(1859 kJ) followed by rest (BR); (4) breakfast consumption followed by exercise (BE). Exercise was continuous, moderate-intensity running (expending approximately 2·9MJ of energy). The equivalent time was spent sitting during resting trials. A test drink (1500 kJ) was ingested on all trials followed 90 min later by an ad libitum lunch. The difference between the BR and FR trials in blood glucose time-averaged AUC following test drink consumption approached significance (BR: 4·33 (SEM 0·14) v. FR: 4·75 (SEM 0·16) mmol/l; P¼0·08); but it was not different between FR and FE (FE: 4·77 (SEM 0·14) mmol/l; P¼0·65); and was greater in BE (BE: 4·97 (SEM 0·13) mmol/l) v. BR(P¼0·012). Appetite following the test drink was reduced in BR v. FR (P¼0·006) and in BE v. FE (P¼0·029). Following lunch, the most positive energy balance was observed in BR and least positive in FE. Regardless of breakfast, acute exercise produced a less positive energy balance following ad libitum lunch consumption. Energy and fat balance is further reduced with breakfast omission. Breakfast improved the overall appetite responses to foods consumed later in the day, but abrogated the appetite suppressive effect of exercise
