New species of \u3ci\u3eHydrellia \u3c/i\u3e(Diptera: Ephydridae) from the southern United States
Five new species of Hydrellia Robineau-Desvoidy are described from localities in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. H. alabamae, n. sp. was first collected on water primrose in northern Alabama and later in northern Florida on Nuphar and Nymphoides. At present, there is no indication about potential host plant species. H. naiadis, n. sp. was reared from Najas guadalupensis (Spreng) Morong in northern Florida and later collected throughout the state and also in southeastern Texas. H. apalachee, n. sp., first collected in northern Florida and later in northern Alabama, is unique among described Hydrellia in having a bivittate mesonotum. Thus far, no host-plant species is known for this species. H. lirnnobii, n. sp. was first reared from Limnobium spongia (Bosc) Richard (frogbit) in 1986 at the Florida Biological Control Laboratory and has since been collected throughout the state as well as in southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas. The last species, H. pontederiae, n. sp., with males 4.00 mm and females 4.80 mm long, is the largest species in the genus as known by me; it has been reared from Pontederia cordata Linnaeus, but only one specimen (a female) has been collected in the field

A critical taxonomic analysis of the Hydrellia pakistanae species group (Diptera: Ephydrida)
Critical taxonomic analysis of the Hydrellia pakistanae species group yielded H. pakistanae Deonier, H. sarahae, n.sp. (composed of H. sarahae sarahae, n.ssp. in China and H. sarahae laticapsula, n.ssp. in India and Pakistan), H. balciunasi Bock known only from Australia, and a related species, H. bogorae, n.sp. from Java, Indonesia. These species all have the same primary host-plant species, i.e., Hydrilla verticillata, a fact making them all potential biocontrol agents for this aquatic plant pest in North America and other areas where it has pest status. Morphology is summarized as well as perceived synapomorphies of this species group
Cavatorella spirodelae Deonier (Diptera: Ephydridae), a new genus and new species from Spirodela (giant duckweed) in China and Japan
Diagnostic characters of Glaresis mendica Horn are discussed, and an undescribed species, confused with G. mendica by authors subsequent to Horn, is described as Glaresis gordoni new species. A second new species, Glaresis zvirgzdinsi, is described from two isolated sand dunes in Yuma County, Arizona, USA. Diagnostic characters of the new species, as well as those of G. mendica, are illustrated
Hydrellia bicarina, n. sp. (Diptera: Ephydridae), a leafminer in southern watergrass
The species Hydrellia bicarina, n.sp. originally misidentified and described as Hydrellia spinicornis Cresson by Deonier (1971) is redescribed and illustrated. This species was first collectedon and reared from Southern Water Grass Luziola fluitans (Michaux) growing in shallow baytree swamps of southern Mississippi by Deonier (197 1). Based on the male and female genitalia and its natural history, this species is a member of the Hydrellia griseola species group
North American members of the Hydrellia crassipes species group (Diptera: Ephydridae)
The known members of the Hydrellia crassipes species group in North America are described or redescribed, including H. crassipes Cresson, H. procteri Cresson, H. saltator Deonier, H. amplecta n.sp., H. bryani n.sp., H. ocalae n.sp., and H. tibiospica n.sp. Adults of these species exhibit the following synapomorphies: dilated male metafemur and expanded (and flange din some) male metatibia and striate (fibrillate) distiphallus. Only a single species (H. tibiospica n.sp.) was reared from its host-plant species, Juncus debilis Gray, but there are associated habitat data to indicate that the entire species group may have sedges andrushes as host plants
