    Decomposition of paper de-inking sludge in a sandpit minesoil during its revegetation

    Paper de-inking sludge was used as an organic amendment for revegetating an abandoned sandpit in Québec, Canada. In situ patterns of sludge decomposition and of total nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics were characterized in a litter bag study. In a one-time operation, sludge was applied at a rate of 0 or 105 Mg dry matter ha−1, along with N at 3, 6 or 9 kg Mg−1 sludge and P at 0.5 or 1.0 kg Mg−1 sludge. Sludge and fertilizers were incorporated into the top 0.21 m of the minesoil and tall wheatgrass (Agropyron elongatum (Host) Beauv.) was seeded. Mass loss was well described by a double exponential model when cumulative degree-days (sum of daily temperature above 0°C) were used as the independent variable. Fifty-one percent of the initial material decomposed with a half life of 0.4 yr, whereas the remaining material had a much slower rate of decay with a half life of 13 yr. The large size and slow decomposition rate of the recalcitrant pool of this material were attributed to the high lignin content and the presence of clay in the sludge. Both N and P in decomposing sludge presented a short accumulation phase followed by a long release phase which likely contributed to the successful revegetation of this disturbed sandpit site

    Sensitivity analysis for models with dynamic inputs: a case study to control the heat consumption of a real passive house

    International audienceIn this communication, we perform the sensitivity analysis of a building energy model. The aim is to assess the impact of the weather data on the performance of a model of a passive house, in order to better control it. The weather data are uncertain dynamic inputs to the model. To evaluate their impact, the problem of generating coherent weather data arises. To solve it, we carry out the Karhunen-Loève decomposition of the uncertain dynamic inputs. We then propose an approach for the sensitivity analysis of this kind of models. The originality for sensitivity analysis purpose is to separate the random variable of the dynamic inputs, propagated to the model response, from the deterministic spatio/temporal function. This analysis highlights the role of the solar gain on a high-insulated passive building, during winter time

    Sensitivity analysis of complex models: coping with dynamic and static inputs

    International audienceIn this paper, we address the issue of performing sensitivity analysis of complex models presenting uncertain static and dynamic inputs. The dynamic inputs are viewed as random processes which can be represented by a linear combination of the deterministic functions depending on time whose coefficients are uncorrelated random variables. To achieve this, the Karhunen-Loève decomposition of the dynamic inputs is performed. For sensitivity analysis purposes, the influence of the dynamic inputs onto the model response is then given by the one of the uncorrelated random coefficients of the Karhunen-Loève decomposition, which is the originality here. The approach is applied to a building energy model, in order to assess the impact of the uncertainties of the material properties and the weather data on the energy performance of a real low energy consumption house

    National audienceCet article présente la réalisation d'ANCOR, qui constitue par son envergure (453 000 mots) le premier corpus francophone annoté en anaphores et coréférences permettant le développement d'approches centrées sur les données pour la résolution des anaphores et autres traitements de la coréférence. L'annotation a été réalisée sur trois corpus de parole conversationnelle (Accueil_UBS, OTG et ESLO) qui le destinent plus particulièrement au traitement du langage parlé. En l'absence d'équivalent pour le langage écrit, il est toutefois susceptible d'intéresser l'ensemble de la communauté TAL. Par ailleurs, le schéma d'annotation retenu est suffisamment riche pour permettre des études en linguistique de corpus. Le corpus sera diffusé librement à la mi-2013 sous licence Creative Commons BY-NC-SA. Cet article se concentre sur sa mise en œuvre et décrit brièvement quelques résultats obtenus sur la partie déjà annotée de la ressource

    ANCOR_Centre, a Large Free Spoken French Coreference Corpus: description of the Resource and Reliability Measures

    International audienceThis article presents ANCOR_Centre, a French coreference corpus, available under the Creative Commons Licence. With a size of around 500,000 words, the corpus is large enough to serve the needs of data-driven approaches in NLP and represents one of the largest coreference resources currently available. The corpus focuses exclusively on spoken language, it aims at representing a certain variety of spoken genders. ANCOR_Centre includes anaphora as well as coreference relations which involve nominal and pronominal mentions. The paper describes into details the annotation scheme and the reliability measures computed on the resource

    The Effect of Spirulina platensis versus Soybean on Insulin Resistance in HIV-Infected Patients: A Randomized Pilot Study

    HIV-infected patients develop abnormalities of glucose metabolism due to the virus and antiretroviral drugs. Spirulina and soybean are nutritional supplements that are cheap, accessible in our community and affect glucose metabolism. We carried out a randomized study to assess the effect of Spirulina platensis versus soybean as a food supplement on HIV/HAART-associated insulin resistance (IR) in 33 insulin-resistant HIV-infected patients. The study lasted for two months at the National Obesity Centre of Cameroon. Insulin resistance was measured using the short insulin tolerance test. Physical activity and diet did not change over the study duration. On-treatment analysis was used to analyze data. The Mann-Whitney U test, the Students T test and the Chi square test were used as appropriate. Curve gradients were analyzed using ANCOVA. Seventeen subjects were randomized to spirulina and 16 to soybean. Each received 19 g of supplement daily. The follow up rate was 65% vs. 100% for spirulina and soybean groups, respectively, and both groups were comparable at baseline. After eight weeks, insulin sensitivity (IS) increased by 224.7% vs. 60% in the spirulina and soybean groups respectively (p < 0.001). One hundred per cent vs. 69% of subjects on spirulina versus soybean, respectively, improved their IS (p = 0.049) with a 1.45 (1.05–2.02) chance of improving insulin sensitivity on spirulina. This pilot study suggests that insulin sensitivity in HIV patients improves more when spirulina rather than soybean is used as a nutritional supplement.
