Inclusion of People in Decision-Making: The New Challenges

    Get PDF
Reflecting on the May 2019 European Parliament elections, the EU democratic ‎institutions are in need of efficiently responding to the discrepancies between‎ public agendas and policy-making (as shown in the Macedonia naming‎ dispute), and the threatening dynamics of authoritarian populism, as well as‎ to unpredictable reactions from diverse groups and citizens, especially from ‎the neglected, excluded and marginal ones. These citizens cannot handle complexity‎ and react by voting for protest candidates/movements and supporting ‎radical, yet oversimplified and inadequate, solutions to complex problems.‎ Given the potentiality of crisis cascades and that an over-standardized “one‎ size fits all” approach does not work anymore, the EU policy-making experts ‎should arguably turn their analytic attention to existing drivers of political ‎destabilisation by adopting new knowledge bases and sources. This pertains‎ to a fresh theoretical understanding of nonlinear sociopolitical phenomena‎(from populist reactions of any kind to social media behaviours), that is, a‎ deeper, complexity-friendly approach drawn from new scientific advancements‎ and coupled with innovative policy designs, aimed to rebalance the‎ system and to defend the European project against further failures.

Greek Nationalism as a Case of Political Religion: Rituals and Sentimentality

In this paper, we will refer to the historical vicissitudes of the Greek national character since the 19th century signposting two main versions: an antinomic but no less unified national character characterized by internal contrasts vis-à-vis the alleged uni-dimensional canon of western rationality, on the one hand, and a clash of national habitus into two opposite national identities – two modal characters – on the other. Further on, we shall discuss the role of national symbols such as the flag and parades as emotional constituents of nationalism as political religion conferring fragile legitimacy to the state as long as their meaning is under negotiation

In this paper, we study a set of new indices, which are based on the answers of citizens to certain batteries of items included in a CSES module 5 pilot study conducted in Greece after the parliamentary election of September 2015. The first index is used to capture attitudes of citizens towards the political elites and is related to the increasing number of recent publications focusing on the study of populist attitudes. Likewise, the second index is based on items related to a demand for more power to the poor people. Another index developed here is built to measure attitudes towards out-groups. The use of this index is motivated by the increasing power of radical right-wing anti-immigrant parties, especially in Europe and due, to a certain extent, to the recent immigrant crisis. In addition to the aforementioned indices, we also identify the characteristics respondents think to be the most important for someone to be considered as a "Real Greek", i.e. we present what are the most important lines that according to Greek citizens separate the in-group from the out-groups

Back to black:values, ideologies, and the black box of political radicalization

This article focuses on the psychological drivers of anomic and violent behaviors described as ‘new radicalisms’ in the context of the Eurozone economic crisis. The authors make a conceptual and empirical distinction between the desire for change forward against the old (defined as radicalism) and the desire for change backward against the new (defined as reactionism). Using 2015 data from Greece, multinomial logit models test the role of core values that map on the desire for change against the new and the desire for change against the old as predictors of dormant and actualized anomic and violent behaviors. The findings support that desire for conservation triggered reactionist political engagement in Greece that spans across the left/right ideology spectrum

The present study aims to offer a comprehensive presentation of the empirical results of the third wave of the World Internet Project (WIP) nation-wide survey in Greece, which was conducted from the 12th of April to the 23th of May 2019. It involves the main findings of this research wave and explores the development of internet penetration among the Greek population by providing comparative data on several aspects of the respondents’ internetrelated behavior between all three WIP waves (2015, 2017, 2019). These aspects pertain to digital use, access and divides, online activities and social capital, internet reliability and fake news, online victimization and privacy, political efficacy and freedom of expression. Data were collected by 1,208 interviews over the phone on a structured questionnaire (based on WIP guidelines and included some additional national questions of theoretical interest) and manually transferred to an online platform using RM+ software and then to statistical analysis software. The paper also offers descriptive presentations of the results analyses as well as charts including mostly relative frequencies and, in some cases, variable means. The relative frequencies and means are included in the charts in order to allow the reader to have a clear overview of the exact percentages. The results depict Greece as a digitally vulnerable society, with strong internal antinomies, which are in tandem with internet’s radical ambivalence in general
