    Synthesis and Antioxidant Activity of 3,3’-Diselanediylbis (N,N-Disubstituted Indolizine-1-carboxamide) and Derivatives

    Aseries of novel diselenides 5a–e were synthesized from-haloketones, α-picoline alkenes and various secondary amines under a dry nitrogen atmosphere. The structures of these compounds were established by means of their spectral data and they were screened for scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH.). The results of this research showed that two of these compounds (5e and 5d) exhibited reasonable antioxidant activity. The intermediate, methyl 5-methylindolizine-1- carboxylate was prepared by condensation of methyl acrylate with 1-(carboxymethyl)-2-methylpyridinium halide, which was prepared from α-picoline and chloroacetic acid by using the Tschischibabin reaction.Keywords: Antioxidants, diselenides, indolizine, free radical scavenger, 1,1-DPPH

    Undergraduate Medical Education Sex- and Gender-based Education: An Institutional Audit and Integration Project

    Background: While evidence-based medicine (EBM) supports the incorporation of Sex- and Gender-based Medicine (SGBM) into patient care, a significant gap exists in its translation to current undergraduate medical education (UME). Several studies assessing medical student and resident physician knowledge regarding SGBM demonstrate suboptimal awareness, knowledge base, and clinical incorporation. There is urgent need to evaluate UME under a SGBM-focused lens, to emphasize the existing SGBM content, and to identify additional opportunities for inclusion. Method: Lectures from two pre-clinical UME modules, ‘Cardiovascular’ (CV) and ‘Musculoskeletal/ Dermatology’ (MSK/Derm), at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine were subjected to a SGBM taskforce audit. Taskforce auditors were tasked with 1) assessing for pre-existing inclusion of SGBM as well as 2) opportunities for SGBM incorporation. Opportunities for inclusion were identified by a taskforce SGBM expert. Evidence-based SGBM material (e.g. slides) to fill the opportune gaps were subsequently created for module director consideration and ready incorporation. Post-audit follow-up of SGBM incorporation and uptake was completed for both modules. Results: Sixty-four lectures in the MSK/Derm and 23 CV lectures were reviewed by the SGBM audit taskforce. Approximately a third (36%) of all sessions included an element of pre-existing SGBM material (35% of CV; 36% MSK/Derm). Fourteen CV-specific SGBM opportunities were identified, and correlative SGBM inclusive material, was given to the CV module directors; thirteen of these were incorporated (92.8%). Nine MSK/Derm-specific SGBM opportunities were identified with correlative SGBM-inclusive material provided; two (22%) of these were incorporated. Conclusion: Inclusion of SGBM into medical school curriculum is important for comprehensive medical education and ultimately, for patient care. Identifying and collaborating on SGBM educational opportunities will be crucial for its timely uptake into the UME world.     Nodular Melanoma Mimicking Keratoacanthoma : Lessons to learn

    A 67-year-old man of Chinese descent presented with a painless nodular lesion that had been present on his right forearm for the previous 3 months. A single, well-defined, dome-shaped, firm nodule with a central keratin plug surrounded by erythema was noted. Keratoacanthoma with secondary bacterial infection was suspected and the patient underwent an excision biopsy. Biopsy of the nodule and immunohistochemical staining supported a diagnosis of nodular malignant melanoma. It should be noted both that nodular malignant melanoma may present with a wide variety of clinical appearances, and that the lack of melanin pigment in nodular malignant melanoma may hinder the diagnosis of this aggressive tumour

    Desalination Performance of Nano porous Mos2_2 Membrane on Different Salts of Saline Water: A Molecular Dynamics Study

    The freshwater crisis is a growing concern and a pressing problem for the world because of the increasing population, civilization, and rapid industrial growth. The water treatment facilities are able to supply less than 1% of the total water demand. Water desalination can be a potential solution to deal with this alarming issue. Researchers have been exploring for quite some time to find novel nano-enhanced membranes and manufacturing techniques to increase the efficiency of the desalination process. Graphene and graphene modified membranes showed huge potential as desalination membranes for comparatively easier synthesis process and higher ion rejection rate than conventional filter materials. Currently, single-layer Mos2_2 has been discovered to have the same potential of water permeability and ion rejection rate as graphene membrane in a more energy-efficient way. For almost analogous nano porous structure of the graphene membrane, almost 70% of the higher water flux is obtained from the Mos2_2 membrane. In this work, it has been shown that nano porous Mos2_2 membranes provide a promising result for desalinating other salts of seawater alongside NaCl. We have also observed the effect of variations in ions, pore size, and pressure on water permeation and ion rejection rates in the water desalination process. In this study, water permeation increased significantly by increasing the pore area from 20{\AA} to 80{\AA}. The rate of water filtration increases in proportion to both applied pressure and pore size, sacrificing the ion rejection rate for the type of ions studied. A combination of salt ions in the saline water for desalination has also been studied, where the rejection rates for the different ions are separately represented for various applied pressures. For seawater, the Mos2_2 membrane has showed quite promising performance in the study of ion variation

    Anxiety and stress related to COVID-19 among the community dwelling older adults residing in the largest refugee camp of the world

    The current cross-sectional study was conducted among 864 older adults aged ≥ 60 years residing in Rohingya refugee camp through face-to-face interviews during November–December 2021. COVID-19-related anxiety was measured using the five-point Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) and perceived stress using the 10-point Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The linear regression model identified the factors associated with COVID-19-related anxiety and perceived stress. The prevalence of COVID-19-related anxiety and perceived stress was 68% and 93%, respectively. The average COVID-19-related anxiety score expected to be significantly higher among those who were physically inactive, concerned about COVID-19, had a close friend/family member diagnosed with COVID-19, and had some difficulty in getting food and routine medical care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the average perceived stress score was expected to be significantly higher among those without partners, who were feeling overwhelmed by COVID-19, and who experienced COVID-19-related anxiety during the pandemic. The findings suggest providing immediate psychosocial support to older Rohingya adults

The patient complained of chronic, painless, non-bloody, profuse watery diarrhea with a weight loss of 10 kg (decrease to 18 kg from 28 kg prior to illness). He also complained of cough for the last seven days. His father was a driver and died at his 1 year of age due to an unknown disease
