    The study of online inquiry competences (OIC) is an important topic on the information literacy (IL) field. Most of the work has been focused on higher education and high-school students, while less has been done regarding primary education. In this work we investigate the effects of an OIC teaching intervention on search performance of a large group of sixth graders from Finland. Our preliminary results show significant improvements in search performance on the intervened group of students compared to a control group when working on a science research task. This work shed light about the potential benefits of a particular approach to develop OIC on elementary school students.</p

    LETICIA: A toolbox for search task deployment, execution, and user interaction logging on interactive information retrieval studies

    The analysis of search behaviors as proxies of users’ cognitive and affective states – in the context of information seeking – is an active research topic on interactive information retrieval (IIR). This type of research requires specialized tools either to run new studies or to replicate previous ones. While several IIR studies have been conducted over the years, the required tools are not always available, making the replicability of such studies more difficult and expensive. To address this problem, in this article, we introduce LETICIA (simuLated sEarch Task deploy and InteraCtIon cApture platform), an open-source solution designed to deploy study designs, conduct them, and collect various types of data. LETICIA offers ready-to-use functionalities that can be customized to fit researchers’ needs. These include a built-in search engine, a tool to build document collections, an application programming interface (API), a powerful data logger, and a session flow manager. LETICIA aims to be a contribution to the IIR community, offering a flexible yet simple tool to deploy environments to conduct user studies

    In this poster we introduce NEURONE, an open source webbased system for assessing online inquiry competences (OIC). NEURONE is a fully customizable solution that can be adapted to different research conditions through eight modules and a set of tools. To date, NEURONE has been successfully used to implement, deploy and run an online assessment contextualized in a pretest-posttest study design, in which nearly 1400 sessions were conducted with 350 elementary school students in their early adolescence
