Non-Native Foreign Language Instructors’ Teaching Expectations Concerning Intercultural Communication Competence: Communicative Practices in the Classroom.
Universities within China recruit thousands of foreign experts to teach Chinese college Students. Generally, institutions require foreigners to be native speakers of languages taught and possess a bachelor’s degree. In the 1980s and 1990s, international teachers were hired so students could master native like pronunciation in foreign languages such as English. Institutions within China are now discussing the current status and future of foreign language teaching in university classrooms. Essentially, department heads are debating if students should learn foreign languages for the purposes of communication with foreigners. In the case of Chinese college students, communicative language teaching may need to be supplemented by intercultural language teaching approach. Foreign experts have the opportunity to play a unique role in such discussions, and indeed are stakeholders themselves. In order to find out instructors’ opinions

Overall, international instructors were favorable towards the inclusion of ICC in their syllabus and weekly lesson plans. However, most pedagogical choices revealed a situational approach to foreign language teaching. Abort Region Determinator (ARD) module feasibility report. Mission planning, mission analysis and software formulation
A detailed performance evaluation of the Abort Region Determinator (ARD) module design was provided in support of OFT-1 ascent and OFT-1 intact launch aborts. The evaluation method used compared ARD results against results obtained using the full-up Space Vehicle Dynamic Simulations program under the same conditions. Results were presented for each of the three major ARD math models: (1) the ascent numerical integrator; (2) the mass model, and (3) the second stage predictor as well as the total ARD module. These results demonstrate that the baselined ARD module meets all design objectives for mission control center orbital flight test launch/abort support
Calponin Developmental isoforms and a low molecular weight variant
AbstractTwo-dimensional gel analysis of basic proteins in developing human smooth muscle identifies calponin as a prominent marker of the differentiated phenotype. Adult tissue (human and mouse) typically expresses up to four calponin isoforms, three of which appear sequentially during fetal development: adult myometrial cells express the same three isoforms in primary culture in vitro and these are down-regulated, in reverse order, during the subsequent modulation of phenotype. Monospecific, polyclonal antibodies against calponin identify a lower molecular weight variant of calponin (L-calponin) that is strongly and specifically expressed in adult smooth muscles of the human urogenital tract. L-Calponin is down-regulated in benign smooth muscle derived tumors (leiomyoma) and is not expressed in primary cultures of normal uterine tissue
Regional agriculture surveys using ERTS-1 data
The Center for Remote Sensing Research has conducted studies designed to evaluate the potential application of ERTS data in performing agricultural inventories, and to develop efficient methods of data handling and analysis useful in the operational context for performing large area surveys. This work has resulted in the development of an integrated system utilizing both human and computer analysis of ground, aerial, and space imagery, which has been shown to be very efficient for regional crop acreage inventories. The technique involves: (1) the delineation of ERTS images into relatively homogeneous strata by human interpreters, (2) the point-by-point classification of the area within each strata on the basis of crop type using a human/machine interactive digital image processing system; and (3) a multistage sampling procedure for the collection of supporting aerial and ground data used in the adjustment and verification of the classification results
The effects of pelleted cannabidiol supplementation on heart rate and reaction scores in horses
The potential use of cannabidiol (CBD) as a nutraceutical to support improved health and welfare has been of increasing interest. In particular, CBD has been shown to decrease anxiety in humans and small animals. While there is little research published on the effects of CBD supplementation in horses, its use is increasing rapidly. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feeding a pelleted CBD supplement on equine reactivity and heart rate (HR). Seventeen stock-type geldings were divided into control (CON) or treatment (TRT) groups. The TRT group received 100 mg of CBD once daily. Control horses were maintained on their standard diet without supplementation. A novel object test was used to evaluate changes in HR and reactivity before and after 6 weeks of supplementation. Heart rate was recorded before, at, and after exposure to the novel object. Reactivity when the horse was exposed to the novel object was scored live and through video review. There was no difference in starting, stimulus, or final HR, but TRT horses exhibited less reactivity after 6 weeks of supplementation. Results suggest that CBD supplementation may lower reactivity in horses
Membrane Cholesterol Regulates Smooth Muscle Phasic Contraction
The regulation of contractile activity in smooth muscle cells involves rapid discrimination and processing of a multitude of simultaneous signals impinging on the membrane before an integrated functional response can be generated. The sarcolemma of smooth muscle cells is segregated into caveolar regions-largely identical with cholesterol-rich membrane rafts—and actin-attachment sites, localized in non-raft, glycerophospholipid regions. Here we demonstrate that selective extraction of cholesterol abolishes membrane segregation and disassembles caveolae. Simultaneous measurements of force and [Ca2+]i in rat ureters demonstrated that extraction of cholesterol resulted in inhibition of both force and intracellular Ca2+ signals. Considering the major structural reorganization of cholesterol-depleted sarcolemma, it is intriguing to note that decreased levels of membrane cholesterol are accompanied by a highly specific inhibition of phasic, but not tonic contractions. This implies that signalling cascades that ultimately lead to either phasic or tonic response may be spatially segregated in the plane of the sarcolemma. Replenishment of cholesterol restores normal contractile behavior. In addition, the tissue function is re-established by inhibiting the large-conductance K+-channel. Sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation in combination with Western blotting analysis demonstrates that its α-subunit is associated with detergent-resistant membranes, suggesting that the channel might be localized within the membrane rafts in vivo. These findings are important in understanding the complex signalling pathways in smooth muscle and conditions such as premature labor and hypertensio
