    Enhancement of crude oil polluted soil by applying single and combined cow-dung and hydrogen peroxide as remediating agents

    The study aimed at enhancing the remediationof crude oil polluted soil of the Niger Delta using cow dung and hydrogen peroxide in either single or combined forms. 5 kg of soil each was polluted with 200 ml of crude oil representing 4% w/v. Five  amendment treatments labelledA- E were done in order of A (polluted soil + 1.2 kg cow dung), B (polluted soil + 1000 ml Hydrogen peroxide), C (polluted soil + 0.6 kg cow dung +500 ml hydrogen peroxide), D (polluted soil without amendment) and E (unpolluted soil without amendment).pH, conductivity, organic carbon, organic matter, phosphate, nitrate, total hydrocarbon content, potassium and microbial population were analyzed before and after remediation. The results showed that addition of cowdung and H2O2 enhanced remediation of the polluted soilespecially in treatment A and C with significant increase (p=0.05) in soil conductivity, pH and nutrients when compared to the un-amended soil. Reduction in the total hydrocarbon content (THC) was in the order of A (79.48%)>C (77.95%) >B (75.75%)  >D(46%)with significant increase in hydrocarbon degrading microbes in the amended soil.The amendments have the capacities to enhance remediation of crude oil polluted soil.Also, the combined treatments did not have any advantage over the single treatment options as the use of cowdung single treatment perform best in terms of its remediation potential. Therefore, nutrient enhancement should be  considered a critical factor in the remediation of crude oil polluted soil.Keywords: remediation, physiochemical, parameters, soil, crude oil

    Unraveling the Complex Solid-State Phase Transition Behavior of 1-Iodoadamantane, a Material for Which Ostensibly Identical Crystals Undergo Different Transformation Pathways

    Phase transitions in crystalline molecular solids have important implications in the fundamental understanding of materials properties and in the development of materials applications. Herein, we report the solid-state phase transition behavior of 1-iodoadamantane (1-IA) investigated using a multi-technique strategy [synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), single-crystal XRD, solid-state NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)], which reveals complex phase transition behavior on cooling from ambient temperature to ca. 123 K and on subsequent heating to the melting temperature (348 K). Starting from the known phase of 1-IA at ambient temperature (phase A), three low-temperature phases are identified (phases B, C, and D); the crystal structures of phases B and C are reported, together with a re-determination of the structure of phase A. Remarkably, single-crystal XRD shows that some individual crystals of phase A transform to phase B, while other crystals of phase A transform instead to phase C. Results (from powder XRD and DSC) on cooling a powder sample of phase A are fully consistent with this behavior while also revealing an additional transformation pathway from phase A to phase D. Thus, on cooling, a powder sample of phase A transforms partially to phase C (at 229 K), partially to phase D (at 226 K) and partially to phase B (at 211 K). During the cooling process, each of the phases B, C, and D is formed directly from phase A, and no transformations are observed between phases B, C, and D. On heating the resulting triphasic powder sample of phases B, C, and D from 123 K, phase B transforms to phase D (at 211 K), followed by the transformation of phase D to phase C (at 255 K), and finally, phase C transforms to phase A (at 284 K). From these observations, it is apparent that different crystals of phase A, which are ostensibly identical at the level of information revealed by XRD, must actually differ in other aspects that significantly influence their low-temperature phase transition pathways. This unusual behavior will stimulate future studies to gain deeper insights into the specific properties that control the phase transition pathways in individual crystals of this material

    Robots that can adapt like animals

    As robots leave the controlled environments of factories to autonomously function in more complex, natural environments, they will have to respond to the inevitable fact that they will become damaged. However, while animals can quickly adapt to a wide variety of injuries, current robots cannot "think outside the box" to find a compensatory behavior when damaged: they are limited to their pre-specified self-sensing abilities, can diagnose only anticipated failure modes, and require a pre-programmed contingency plan for every type of potential damage, an impracticality for complex robots. Here we introduce an intelligent trial and error algorithm that allows robots to adapt to damage in less than two minutes, without requiring self-diagnosis or pre-specified contingency plans. Before deployment, a robot exploits a novel algorithm to create a detailed map of the space of high-performing behaviors: This map represents the robot's intuitions about what behaviors it can perform and their value. If the robot is damaged, it uses these intuitions to guide a trial-and-error learning algorithm that conducts intelligent experiments to rapidly discover a compensatory behavior that works in spite of the damage. Experiments reveal successful adaptations for a legged robot injured in five different ways, including damaged, broken, and missing legs, and for a robotic arm with joints broken in 14 different ways. This new technique will enable more robust, effective, autonomous robots, and suggests principles that animals may use to adapt to injury

    Medication safety in community pharmacy: a qualitative study of the sociotechnical context

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>While much research has been conducted on medication safety, few of these studies have addressed primary care, despite the high volume of prescribing and dispensing of medicines that occurs in this setting. Those studies that have examined primary care dispensing emphasised the need to understand the role of sociotechnical factors (that is, the interactions between people, tasks, equipment and organisational structures) in promoting or preventing medication incidents. The aim of this study was to identify sociotechnical factors that community pharmacy staff encounter in practice, and suggest how these factors might impact on medication safety.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sixty-seven practitioners, working in the North West of England, took part in ten focus groups on risk management in community pharmacy. The data obtained from these groups was subjected to a qualitative analysis to identify recurrent themes pertaining to sociotechnical aspects of medication safety.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The findings indicated several characteristics of participants' work settings that were potentially related to medication safety. These were broadly classified as relationships involving the pharmacist, demands on the pharmacist and management and governance of pharmacists.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>It is recommended that the issues raised in this study be considered in future work examining medication safety in primary care.</p

    Optimisation and molecular signalling of apoptosis in sequential cryotherapy and chemotherapy combination in human A549 lung cancer xenografts in SCID mice

    We define the optimal parameters for combination of cryotherapy (nitrous oxide) with chemotherapy (vinorelbine ditartrate, VNB) treatment and characterise some of the signals involved for apoptosis activation. No advantage appeared when cryotherapy and VNB were combined simultaneously compared to cryosurgery alone. In contrast, tumour volumes were reduced after a sequential treatment schedule, where each individual treatment was separated by 48 h. No significant benefit appeared when the sequential treatment was separated by 24 h, although some individual mice showed a good response. The sequence of treatment had no impact on the observed tumour growth inhibition in mice. The number of apoptotic cells was significantly augmented in the sequential treatment schedule where VNB was administered 48 h before cryotherapy. In this sequential treatment, the number of apoptotic cells correlated with heightened expression of the BH3-only Puma, Noxa and Bim-EL, at both the mRNA and protein levels. No significant change in Bax, Bcl-xL and Bcl-2 mRNA expression was apparent, whereas Mcl-1 expression increased only slightly to a much lower level than BH3-only mRNAs. Our data indicate that 48 h sequential rather than simultaneous cryotherapy with VNB in future cancer cryochemotherapy schedules will enhance the tumour response, and argue that VNB administration, 48 h before cryotherapy, will provoke apoptosis more efficiently

    Geographic range did not confer resilience to extinction in terrestrial vertebrates at the end-Triassic crisis

    Rates of extinction vary greatly through geological time, with losses particularly concentrated in mass extinctions. Species duration at other times varies greatly, but the reasons for this are unclear. Geographical range correlates with lineage duration amongst marine invertebrates, but it is less clear how far this generality extends to other groups in other habitats. It is also unclear whether a wide geographical distribution makes groups more likely to survive mass extinctions. Here we test for extinction selectivity amongst terrestrial vertebrates across the end-Triassic event. We demonstrate that terrestrial vertebrate clades with larger geographical ranges were more resilient to extinction than those with smaller ranges throughout the Triassic and Jurassic. However, this relationship weakened with increasing proximity to the end-Triassic mass extinction, breaking down altogether across the event itself. We demonstrate that these findings are not a function of sampling biases; a perennial issue in studies of this kind

    Autonomy and Its Role in English Language Learning: Practice and Research

    This chapter picks up discussion in the previous edition of this handbook of how the concept of autonomy has influenced language education and applied linguistics in recent years. It begins by discussing the philosophical and practical origins of learner autonomy in language education and particularly in English language teaching and how these have developed over the last 10 years. Key practical initiatives and research findings are reviewed to illuminate how autonomy has been interpreted in relation to learners, teachers, and the learning situation; how it has been linked or contrasted with other constructs; and how fostering autonomy has been seen as a part of pedagogy. Recent developments from the earlier edition are discussed regarding metacognition and, in particular, various contextual dimensions of learner autonomy. Other emerging topics are also reviewed, including learner autonomy in the world of digital/social media, learner autonomy in curriculum design and published materials, and the relation of learner autonomy to plurilingual perspectives. The chapter discusses issues in each of these areas, potential strategies for developing autonomy and effective learning, and possible future directions for research and practice

    SHV Lactamase Engineering Database: a reconciliation tool for SHV β-lactamases in public databases

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>SHV β-lactamases confer resistance to a broad range of antibiotics by accumulating mutations. The number of SHV variants is steadily increasing. 117 SHV variants have been assigned in the SHV mutation table (<url>http://www.lahey.org/Studies/</url>). Besides, information about SHV β-lactamases can be found in the rapidly growing NCBI protein database. The SHV β-Lactamase Engineering Database (SHVED) has been developed to collect the SHV β-lactamase sequences from the NCBI protein database and the SHV mutation table. It serves as a tool for the detection and reconciliation of inconsistencies, and for the identification of new SHV variants and amino acid substitutions.</p> <p>Description</p> <p>The SHVED contains 200 protein entries with distinct sequences and 20 crystal structures. 83 protein sequences are included in the both the SHV mutation table and the NCBI protein database, while 35 and 82 protein sequences are only in the SHV mutation table and the NCBI protein database, respectively. Of these 82 sequences, 41 originate from microbial sources, and 22 of them are full-length sequences that harbour a mutation profile which has not been classified yet in the SHV mutation table. 27 protein entries from the NCBI protein database were found to have an inconsistency in SHV name identification. These inconsistencies were reconciled using information from the SHV mutation table and stored in the SHVED.</p> <p>The SHVED is accessible at <url>http://www.LacED.uni-stuttgart.de/classA/SHVED/</url>. It provides sequences, structures, and a multisequence alignment of SHV β-lactamases with the corrected annotation. Amino acid substitutions at each position are also provided. The SHVED is updated monthly and supplies all data for download.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The SHV β-Lactamase Engineering Database (SHVED) contains information about SHV variants with reconciled annotation. It serves as a tool for detection of inconsistencies in the NCBI protein database, helps to identify new mutations resulting in new SHV variants, and thus supports the investigation of sequence-function relationships of SHV β-lactamases.</p

    Carotenoid Distribution in Living Cells of Haematococcus pluvialis (Chlorophyceae)

    Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater unicellular green microalga belonging to the class Chlorophyceae and is of commercial interest for its ability to accumulate massive amounts of the red ketocarotenoid astaxanthin (3,3′-dihydroxy-β,β-carotene-4,4′-dione). Using confocal Raman microscopy and multivariate analysis, we demonstrate the ability to spectrally resolve resonance–enhanced Raman signatures associated with astaxanthin and β-carotene along with chlorophyll fluorescence. By mathematically isolating these spectral signatures, in turn, it is possible to locate these species independent of each other in living cells of H. pluvialis in various stages of the life cycle. Chlorophyll emission was found only in the chloroplast whereas astaxanthin was identified within globular and punctate regions of the cytoplasmic space. Moreover, we found evidence for β-carotene to be co-located with both the chloroplast and astaxanthin in the cytosol. These observations imply that β-carotene is a precursor for astaxanthin and the synthesis of astaxanthin occurs outside the chloroplast. Our work demonstrates the broad utility of confocal Raman microscopy to resolve spectral signatures of highly similar chromophores in living cells
