An aerial vehicle rotating in gyroscopic fashion about one of its axes has an optical system which scans an area below the vehicle in determined relation to vehicle rotation. A sensing device is provided to sense the physical condition of the area of scan and optical means are associated to direct the physical intelligence received from the scan area to the sensing means. Means are provided to incrementally move the optical means through a series of steps to effect sequential line scan of the area being viewed keyed to the rotational rate of the vehicle
Developing an On-Line Interactive Health Psychology Module.
On-line teaching material in health psychology was developed which ensured a range of students could access appropriate material for their course and level of study. This material has been developed around the concept of smaller 'content chunks' which can be combined into whole units of learning (topics), and ultimately, a module. On the basis of the underlying philosophy that the medium is part of the message, we considered interactivity to be a key element in engaging the student with the material. Consequently, the key aim of this development was to stimulate and engage students, promoting better involvement with the academic material, and hence better learning. It was hoped that this was achieved through the development of material including linked programmes and supporting material, small Java Scripts and basic email, forms and HTML additions. This material is outlined as are some of the interactive activities introduced, and the preliminary student and tutor experience described
Associations of height, leg length, and lung function with cardiovascular risk factors in the Midspan Family Study
<b>Background</b>: Taller people and those with better lung function are at reduced risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Biological mechanisms for these associations are not well understood, but both measures may be markers for early life exposures. Some studies have shown that leg length, an indicator of pre-pubertal nutritional status, is the component of height most strongly associated with CHD risk. Other studies show that height-CHD associations are greatly attenuated when lung function is controlled for. This study examines (1) the association of height and the components of height (leg length and trunk length) with CHD risk factors and (2) the relative strength of the association of height and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) with risk factors for CHD.
<b>Subjects and methods</b>: Cross sectional analysis of data collected at detailed cardiovascular screening examinations of 1040 men and 1298 women aged 30–59 whose parents were screened in 1972–76. Subjects come from 1477 families and are members of the Midspan Family Study.
<b>Setting</b>: The towns of Renfrew and Paisley in the West of Scotland.
<b>Results</b>: Taller subjects and those with better lung function had more favourable cardiovascular risk factor profiles, associations were strongest in relation to FEV1. Higher FEV1 was associated with lower blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, fibrinogen, white blood cell count, and body mass index. Similar, but generally weaker, associations were seen with height. These associations were not attenuated in models controlling for parental height. Longer leg length, but not trunk length, was associated with lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Longer leg length was also associated with more favourable levels of cholesterol and body mass index than trunk length.
<b>Conclusions</b>:These findings provide indirect evidence that measures of lung development and pre-pubertal growth act as biomarkers for childhood exposures that may modify an individual's risk of developing CHD. Genetic influences do not seem to underlie height-CHD associations
What’s a threat on social media? How Black and Latino Chicago young men define and navigate threats online
Youth living in violent urban neighborhoods increasingly post messages online from urban street corners. The decline of the digital divide and the proliferation of social media platforms connect youth to peer communities who may share experiences with neighborhood stress and trauma. Social media can also be used for targeted retribution when threats and insults are directed at individuals or groups. Recent research suggests that gang-involved youth may use social media to brag, post fight videos, insult, and threaten—a phenomenon termed Internet banging. In this article, we leverage “code of the digital street” to understand how and in what ways social media facilitates urban-based youth violence. We utilize qualitative interviews from 33 Black and Latino young men who frequent violence prevention programs and live in violent neighborhoods in Chicago. Emerging themes describe how and why online threats are conceptualized on social media. Implications for violence prevention and criminal investigations are discussed
Structure and functional motifs of GCR1, the only plant protein with a GPCR fold?
Whether GPCRs exist in plants is a fundamental biological question. Interest in deorphanizing new G
protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), arises because of their importance in signaling. Within plants, this
is controversial as genome analysis has identified 56 putative GPCRs, including GCR1 which is
reportedly a remote homologue to class A, B and E GPCRs. Of these, GCR2, is not a GPCR; more
recently it has been proposed that none are, not even GCR1. We have addressed this disparity
between genome analysis and biological evidence through a structural bioinformatics study, involving
fold recognition methods, from which only GCR1 emerges as a strong candidate. To further probe
GCR1, we have developed a novel helix alignment method, which has been benchmarked against the
the class A – class B - class F GPCR alignments. In addition, we have presented a mutually consistent
set of alignments of GCR1 homologues to class A, class B and class F GPCRs, and shown that GCR1
is closer to class A and /or class B GPCRs than class A, class B or class F GPCRs are to each other.
To further probe GCR1, we have aligned transmembrane helix 3 of GCR1 to each of the 6 GPCR
classes. Variability comparisons provide additional evidence that GCR1 homologues have the GPCR
fold. From the alignments and a GCR1 comparative model we have identified motifs that are common
to GCR1, class A, B and E GPCRs. We discuss the possibilities that emerge from this controversial

Magnetic Flux Transport at the Solar Surface
After emerging to the solar surface, the Sun's magnetic field displays a
complex and intricate evolution. The evolution of the surface field is
important for several reasons. One is that the surface field, and its dynamics,
sets the boundary condition for the coronal and heliospheric magnetic fields.
Another is that the surface evolution gives us insight into the dynamo process.
In particular, it plays an essential role in the Babcock-Leighton model of the
solar dynamo. Describing this evolution is the aim of the surface flux
transport model. The model starts from the emergence of magnetic bipoles.
Thereafter, the model is based on the induction equation and the fact that
after emergence the magnetic field is observed to evolve as if it were purely
radial. The induction equation then describes how the surface flows --
differential rotation, meridional circulation, granular, supergranular flows,
and active region inflows -- determine the evolution of the field (now taken to
be purely radial). In this paper, we review the modeling of the various
processes that determine the evolution of the surface field. We restrict our
attention to their role in the surface flux transport model. We also discuss
the success of the model and some of the results that have been obtained using

Large emergency-response exercises: qualitative characteristics - a survey
Exercises, drills, or simulations are widely used, by governments, agencies and commercial organizations, to simulate serious incidents and train staff how to respond to them. International cooperation has led to increasingly large-scale exercises, often involving hundreds or even thousands of participants in many locations. The difference between ‘large’ and ‘small’ exercises is more than one of size: (a) Large exercises are more ‘experiential’ and more likely to undermine any model of reality that single organizations may create; (b) they create a ‘play space’ in which organizations and individuals act out their own needs and identifications, and a ritual with strong social implications; (c) group-analytic psychotherapy suggests that the emotions aroused in a large group may be stronger and more difficult to control. Feelings are an unacknowledged major factor in the success or failure of exercises; (d) successful large exercises help improve the nature of trust between individuals and the organizations they represent, changing it from a situational trust to a personal trust; (e) it is more difficult to learn from large exercises or to apply the lessons identified; (f) however, large exercises can help develop organizations and individuals. Exercises (and simulation in general) need to be approached from a broader multidisciplinary direction if their full potential is to be realized
