An overview of aerospace gas turbine technology of relevance to the development of the automotive gas turbine engine

    Get PDF
Technology areas related to gas turbine propulsion systems with potential for application to the automotive gas turbine engine are discussed. Areas included are: system steady-state and transient performance prediction techniques, compressor and turbine design and performance prediction programs and effects of geometry, combustor technology and advanced concepts, and ceramic coatings and materials technology

Benchmarking Diversity: A First Look at New York City Foundations and Nonprofits

    Get PDF
New York City foundations and nonprofit organizations have racially diverse staffs, according to a new report by Philanthropy New York and the Foundation Center, but this diversity decreases at higher levels of seniority. A substantial number of foundations and nonprofits are tracking information about the racial and ethnic makeup of the grantees and populations that they respectively serve. The study is the first of its kind in New York City and the nation to examine "both sides" of the equation -- with survey data from 95 grantmaking foundations and 540 nonprofit organizations in the five boroughs

Requirements for implementation of Kuessner and Wagner indicial lift growth functions into the FLEXSTAB computer program system for use in dynamic loads analyses

    Get PDF
General requirements for dynamic loads analyses are described. The indicial lift growth function unsteady subsonic aerodynamic representation is reviewed, and the FLEXSTAB CPS is evaluated with respect to these general requirements. The effects of residual flexibility techniques on dynamic loads analyses are also evaluated using a simple dynamic model

Introduction to the themed issue - Corporate power : agency, communication, influence and social policy

    Get PDF
This paper introduces this themed issue of Critical Social Policy on the question of corporate power. Corporate power is recognized as an important agent in social policy making and delivery. However, to date there has been comparatively little attention to the crucial role that lobbying and corporate 'spin' play in helping to shape policy making contexts. This special issue of Critical Social Policy is concerned to bring such issues to the mainstream of social policy analysis. It is argued here that the rise of spin and public relations is a key feature of neoliberalism in the past two decades. These have worked to reshape policy making, resulting in pronounced changes in the content and process of policy making and it is argued that these have tended to marginalize or undermine democratic processes

Drive Train Normal Modes Analysis for the ERDA/NASA 100-Kilowatt Wind Turbine Generator

Natural frequencies, as a function of power were determined using a finite element model. Operating conditions investigated were operation with a resistive electrical load and operation synchronized to an electrical utility grid. The influence of certain drive train components on frequencies and mode shapes is shown. An approximate method for obtaining drive train natural frequencies is presented

Quantitative Determination of the Adiabatic Condition Using Force-Detected Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

The adiabatic condition governing cyclic adiabatic inversion of proton spins in a micron-sized ammonium chloride crystal was studied using room temperature nuclear magnetic resonance force microscopy. A systematic degradation of signal-to-noise was observed as the adiabatic condition became violated. A theory of adiabatic following applicable to cyclic adiabatic inversion is reviewed and implemented to quantitatively determine an adiabaticity threshold (γH1)2/(ωoscΩ)=6.0(\gamma H_1)^2/(\omega_{osc}\Omega) = 6.0 from our experimental results.Comment: 5 pages, 3 fig
