    Infra-red Divergences in Light-Front QED and Coherent State Basis

    We present a next to leading order calculation of electron mass renormalization in Light-Front Quantum Electrodynamics (LFQED) using old-fashioned time ordered perturbation theory (TOPT). We show that the true infrared divergences in δm2\delta m^2 get canceled up to O(e4)O(e^4) if one uses coherent state basis instead of fock basis to calculate the transition matrix elements.Comment: 44 pages,11 figure

    Quantum Antiferromagnetism in Quasicrystals

    The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is studied on a two-dimensional bipartite quasiperiodic lattice. The distribution of local staggered magnetic moments is determined on finite square approximants with up to 1393 sites, using the Stochastic Series Expansion Quantum Monte Carlo method. A non-trivial inhomogeneous ground state is found. For a given local coordination number, the values of the magnetic moments are spread out, reflecting the fact that no two sites in a quasicrystal are identical. A hierarchical structure in the values of the moments is observed which arises from the self-similarity of the quasiperiodic lattice. Furthermore, the computed spin structure factor shows antiferromagnetic modulations that can be measured in neutron scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. This generic model is a first step towards understanding magnetic quasicrystals such as the recently discovered Zn-Mg-Ho icosahedral structure.Comment: RevTex, 4 pages with 5 figure

    CD4 count evaluation in HIV-TB co infection before and after anti-tubercular treatment

    Background:The global impact of Tuberculosis (TB) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) co-infection is one of the major public health challenge. India has a very high burden of TB according to the WHO. A decrease in CD4 counts in HIV-TB co-infection leads to an increase in morbidity and mortality.Methods:Information regarding the duration of HIV, type of TB, CD4 counts before and after ATT and any associated Opportunistic Infections (OIs) were collected from the records of 100 patients with HIV-TB co-infection who attended ART centre for a period of one year. The collected data was statistically analyzed.Results: In the study group, 35 had Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) and 65 had Extra Pulmonary Tuberculosis (EPTB), 40 had OIs. Mean CD4 count prior to ATT in PTB was 197 (7-940), EPTB 192 (13-683) and with OIs 129 (7-288). After completion in PTB was 300, EPTB 302 and 252 in OIs. Least CD4 count of 121 was observed in patients above 50yrs and after completion it was 133. Incidence of both EPTB and PTB was higher in males 66.2% and 62.9%, and in the age group of 31-50 yrs 50.8% and 60% (Cell counts expressed in cells/µl.).Conclusion:In our study, we found that there was significant recovery of CD4 cells following ATT. Difference in CD4 counts among patients with PTB and EPTB was not significant. There was remarkable reduction of CD4 counts in patients who had other OIs and the recovery after ATT was also marginal.

    Hybrid Swarm Intelligence Method for Post Clustering Content Based Image Retrieval

    AbstractContent Based Image Retrieval is one of the most promising method for image retrieval where searching and retrieving images from large scale image database is a critical task. In Content Based Image Retrieval many visual feature like color, shape, and texture are extracted in order to match query image with stored database images. Matching the query image with each image of large scale database results in large number of disc scans which in turns slows down the systems performance.The proposed work suggested an approach for post clustering Content Based Image Retrieval, in which the database images are clustered into optimized clusters for further retrieval process. Various clustering algorithms are implemented and results are compared. Among all, it is found that hybrid ACPSO algorithm performs better over basic algorithms like k-means, ACO, PSO etc. Hybrid ACPSO has the capability to produce good cluster initialization and form global clustering.This paper discusses work-in-progress where we have implemented till clustering module and intermediate results are produced. These resulted clusters will further be used for effective Content Based Image Retrieval

    Theoretically proposed optimal frequency for ultrasound induced cartilage restoration

    Background: Matching the frequency of the driving force to that of the system’s natural frequency of vibration results in greater amplitude response. Thus we hypothesize that applying ultrasound at the chondrocyte’s resonant frequency will result in greater deformation than applying similar ultrasound power at a frequency outside of the resonant bandwidth. Based on this resonant hypothesis, our group previously confirmed theoretically and experimentally that ultrasound stimulation of suspended chondrocytes at resonance (5 MHz) maximized gene expression of load inducible genes. However, this study was based on suspended chondrocytes. The resonant frequency of a chondrocyte does not only depend on the cell mass and intracellular stiffness, but also on the mechanical properties of the surrounding medium. An in vivo chondrocyte’s environment differs whether it be a blood clot (following microfracture), a hydrogel or the pericellular and extracellular matrices of the natural cartilage. All have distinct structures and compositions leading to different resonant frequencies. In this study, we present two theoretical models, the first model to understand the effects of the resonant frequency on the cellular deformation and the second to identify the optimal frequency range for clinical applications of ultrasound to enhance cartilage restoration. Results: We showed that applying low-intensity ultrasound at the resonant frequency induced deformation equivalent to that experimentally calculated in previous studies at higher intensities and a 1 MHz frequency. Additionally, the resonant frequency of an in vivo chondrocyte in healthy conditions, osteoarthritic conditions, embedded in a blood clot and embedded in fibrin ranges from 3.5 − 4.8 MHz. Conclusion: The main finding of this study is the theoretically proposed optimal frequency for clinical applications of therapeutic ultrasound induced cartilage restoration is 3.5 − 4.8 MHz (the resonant frequencies of in vivo chondrocytes). Application of ultrasound in this frequency range will maximize desired bioeffects

    Prophylactic use of tranexamic acid for reducing postpartum hemorrhage in vaginal delivery

    Background: The use of anti-fibrinolytic therapy has potential to reduce obstetric blood loss due to profound changes that take place in the fibrinolytic system during normal childbirth. Objective was to evaluate the efficacy of tranexamic acid in reducing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) during normal labour.Methods: Patients who planned for normal delivery and fulfilling the inclusion criteria were recruited for the study. The pre-delivery parameters -pulse rate, blood pressure, Hb gm% and PCV% were measured for each patient. The study group received injection oxytocin (10 IU) and injection tranexamic acid (500 mg) slow intravenous route. The control group received injection oxytocin (10 IU) and placebo injection. Immediately after delivery of the anterior shoulder of the baby, when all the liquor was drained, Brasse-V drape is placed under the patient. Then the patient was given pre-weighed pads, which were weighed 2 hours post-partum. Final blood loss was calculated by combining amount of blood collected in the drape and blood absorbed by the pads.Results: The total number of patients studied was 300- equally distributed in both the groups. There was a significant increase in the pulse rate and decrease in blood pressure in the control group compared to the study group. The post-delivery haemoglobin and haematocrit were significantly reduced in the control group. The blood loss was significantly low in the study group. The need for other uterotonics, blood transfusion, and duration of hospital stay, were significantly low in study group.Conclusions: Tranexamic acid, when given prophylactically to the women with vaginal delivery who received prophylactic oxytocin, appears to reduce the blood loss effectively compared to placebo alone
