Fracture toughness of fabrication welds investigated by metallographic methods. [BWR; PWR]
The intermediate scale test vessels (ITV) were fabricated to provide test specimens that have sufficient wall thickness and simulate light water reactor pressure vessels. They were fabricated from grades of steel that are similar to those used for nuclear pressure vessels, having a wall thickness of 150mm and the same welded construction. They are, however, considerably smaller in height and diameter than actual vessels. To date, ten vessels have been fabricated and eight have been tested. In preparation for testing the eighth vessel (ITV-8), an extensive investigation was conducted of the toughness properties of the fabrication weld. It was thoroughly characterized and the fracture specimens used in this metallographic investigation were taken from that weld metal
Bovine gene polymorphisms related to fat deposition and meat tenderness
Leptin, thyroglobulin and diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase play important roles in fat metabolism. Fat deposition has an influence on meat quality and consumers' choice. The aim of this study was to determine allele and genotype frequencies of polymorphisms of the bovine genes, which encode leptin (LEP), thyroglobulin (TG) and diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase (DGAT1). A further objective was to establish the effects of these polymorphisms on meat characteristics. We genotyped 147 animals belonging to the Nelore (Bos indicus), Canchim (5/8 Bos taurus + 3/8 Bos indicus), Rubia Gallega X Nelore (1/2 Bos taurus + 1/2 Bos indicus), Brangus Three-way cross (9/16 Bos taurus + 7/16 Bos indicus) and Braunvieh Three-way cross (3/4 Bos taurus + 1/4 Bos indicus) breeds. Backfat thickness, total lipids, marbling score, ribeye area and shear force were fitted, using the General Linear Model (GLM) procedure of the SAS software. The least square means of genotypes and genetic groups were compared using Tukey's test. Allele frequencies vary among the genetic groups, depending on Bos indicus versus Bos taurus influence. The LEP polymorphism segregates in pure Bos indicus Nelore animals, which is a new finding. The T allele of TG is fixed in Nelore, and DGAT1 segregates in all groups, but the frequency of allele A is lower in Nelore animals. The results showed no association between the genotypes and traits studied, but a genetic group effect on these traits was found. So, the genetic background remains relevant for fat deposition and meat tenderness, but the gene markers developed for Bos taurus may be insufficient for Bos indicus

Fractographic Study of a Thick Wall Pressure Vessel Failure
The pressure vessel described in this paper is identified as Intermediate Test Vessel 1 (ITV-1) and was fabricated of SA508, Class 2 Steel. It was tested to failure at 54/sup 0/C (130/sup 0/F). The gross failure appeared to be a brittle fracture although accompanied by a measured strain of 0.9%. Seven regions of the fracture were examined in detail and the observed surfaces were compared to Charpy V-notch (C/sub v/) specimens of SA508, Class 2 steel broken at temperatures above and below the ductile to brittle transition temperature. Three samples from the vessel were taken in the region around the fatigue notch and four from areas well removed from the notch. All these were carefully examined both optically and by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was established that early crack extension was by ductile mode until a large flaw approximately 500 mm long 83 mm wide was developed. At this point the vessel could no longer contain the internal pressure and final rupture was by brittle fracture
Analysis of valve springs from hydrogen compressor at Solvent Refined Coal Plant, Wilsonville, Alabama
Failure of hydrogen compressor valve springs at the Wilsonville, Alabama, Solvent Refined Coal Plant caused a total plant shutdown. Type 304 stainless steel springs had been substituted for two of three alloy X750 springs. Mainly because of their geometry, the type 304 stainless steel springs operated at a higher stress than the proper springs, and it is not surprising that they failed. The only as-fractured surface was on the alloy X750 spring. Edge damage caused by rubbing of the springs against neighboring parts may have played an important role in reducing the life of the springs
