Obituary of Francis Cotton

The amended obituary of Francis Cotton, possibly composed by EO Cotton, and printed sometime after Francis' death in 1883 (ND on article). The obituary describes the Cotton family's immigration to Van Diemen's Land and the difficulties they encountered in the colony, including a house fire and attacks by Aborigines in Kelvedon. The article includes details on the life of GF Story, who lived with the Cottons and looked after the family's health. The title complex, [Nb(C7H12N3)4]PF6, features chelating hpp anions (hpp is 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrim­idine) that define a distorted dodeca­hedral coordination geometry based on an N8 donor set. The Nb atom is situated on a site of symmetry , and the PF6 − anion has crystallographic fourfold symmetry

Mercury article on GF Story, with copy of letters, ND (after 1885)

An article on Dr George Fordyce Story, written some time after his death in 1885 by EO Cotton and published in the Mercury. Cotton copies two of Story's letters in this article, the first written in 1813 when he was still in school, and the second (undated) while working and living in Tasmania. The second letter details some of the difficulties of Story's situation as district assistant surgeon in Great Swanport (Swansea), and highlights the poor pay he received. Cotton also describes Story's death and burial site. From Private Deposits M19/8

Transnational Governance as Contested Institution-Building: China, Merchants, and Contract Rules in the Cotton Trade

We are in an era of uncertainty over whose rules will govern global economic integration. With the growing market share of Chinese firms and the power of the Chinese state it is unclear if Western firms will continue to dominate transnational governance. Exploring these dynamics through a study of contract rules in the global cotton trade, this article conceptualizes commodity chain governance as a contested process of institution-building. To this end, the global commodity chain/global value chain (GCC/GVC) framework must be revised to better account for the broader institutional context of commodity chain governance, institutional variation across space, and strategic action in the construction of legitimate governance arrangements. I provide a more dynamic model of GCC governance that stresses how strategic action, existing institutions, and dominant discourses intersect as firms and states compete for institutional power within a commodity chain. This advances our understandings of how commodity chain governance emerges and changes over time
