    Structural and electronic properties of Si/Ge nanoparticles

    Results of a theoretical study of the electronic properties of (Si)Ge and (Ge)Si core/shell nanoparticles, homogeneous SiGe clusters, and Ge∣|Si clusters with an interphase separating the Si and Ge atoms are presented. In general, (Si)Ge particles are more stable than (Ge)Si ones, and SiGe systems are more stable than Ge∣|Si ones. It is found that the frontier orbitals, that dictate the optical properties, are localized to the surface, meaning that saturating dangling bonds on the surface with ligands may influence the optical properties significantly. In the central parts we identify a weak tendency for the Si atoms to accept electrons, whereas Ge atoms donate electrons.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev.

    The story of the Contract Buyers League, unfinished though it is, presents a model of social change that combines familiar techniques in an unusual and extremely powerful way. Rather than contributing to only one phase of social evolution, the Gamaliel Foundation workers have pursued their project through several stages, directly participating in each one. The workers began with a so-called listening process, isolating the problem they would attack from the everyday impressions and experiences shared by the black people in whose ghetto neighborhood they lived. Next, they immersed themselves in Nader-like consumer research, measuring the exploitation in dollars and cents, and identifying the exploiters by names and addresses, thereby transforming gut feelings into a documented pattern. At this point, they could have merely turned over their findings to the mass media where the impact would be dissipated when the intense but short lived attention of the press was played out. Instead, they organized a series of small meetings with the black homebuyers and showed to each the details behind his contract and how his neighbors were in a similar predicament

    Can remifentanil use in obstetrics be improved by optimal patient-controlled analgesia bolus timing?

    Background The safety of patient-controlled i.v. analgesia (PCA) with remifentanil for obstetrical analgesia remains a matter of concern. The efficacy of remifentanil bolus application, that is, the coincidence between pain and remifentanil effect-site concentration, may be improved by forecasting contractions, but it is not known whether such a technique would also improve safety. Methods We recorded pain intensity during labour continuously using a handheld dynamometer in 43 parturients. Using these data, we compared different models in their ability to predict future contractions. In addition, we modelled remifentanil effect-site concentration using three simulated modes of bolus administration, with and without prediction of future contractions. Results The average duration of pain during contractions recorded by the dynamometer was 45 [14 standard deviation (sd)] s. The time interval between painful contractions was highly variable, with a mean of 151 (31 sd) s during the first and 154 (52 sd) s during the second recording. Using a simple algorithm (three-point moving average), the sd of the difference between predicted and observed inter-contraction intervals can be reduced from 0.95 to 0.79 min. However, the coincidence between remifentanil concentration and pain during contraction is not substantially improved when using these models to guide remifentanil bolus application. Conclusions Because of the large variability of inter-contraction intervals, the use of prediction models will not influence the mean remifentanil concentration in-between contractions. Using models predicting future contractions to improve the timing of remifentanil PCA bolus administration will not diminish the need of continuous clinical surveillance and other safety measure

    Ilioinguinal and iliohypogastric nerves cannot be selectively blocked by using ultrasound guidance: a volunteer study

    Background Ilioinguinal (IL) and iliohypogastric (IH) nerve blocks are used in patients with chronic postherniorrhaphy pain. The present study tested the hypothesis that our method, previously developed in cadavers, blocks the nerves separately and selectively in human volunteers. Methods We blocked the IL and the IH nerves in 16 volunteers in a single-blinded randomized cross-over setting under direct ultrasound visualization, by injecting two times the ED95 volume of 1% mepivacaine needed to block a peripheral nerve. The anaesthetized skin areas were tested by pinprick and marked on the skin. A digital photo was taken. For further analysis, the parameterized picture data were transformed into a standardized and unified coordinate system to compare and calculate the overlap of the anaesthetized skin areas of the two nerves on each side. An overlap <25% was defined as selective block. Results Fifty nerve blocks could be analysed. The mean volume injected to block a single nerve was 0.9 ml. Using ultrasound, we observed spread from one nerve to the other in 12% of cases. The overlap of the anaesthetized skin areas of the nerves was 60.3% and did not differ after exclusion of the cases with visible spread of local anaesthetic from one nerve to the other. Conclusions The IL and IH nerves cannot be selectively blocked even if volumes below 1 ml are used. The most likely explanation is the spread of local anaesthetic from one nerve to the other, although this could not be directly observed in most case

    Assessment in higher education has increased over the past several decades. Pressure from constituencies for colleges to demonstrate their effectiveness in measurable terms and loss of public trust in higher education drive the movement toward assessment. Presently, assessment is part of the accreditation process. Student affairs practitioners, including those working with fraternities and sororities, are not immune to these pressures. Yet, many student affairs professionals report feeling inadequately skilled in conducting assessment projects and need guidance in this area of their work. The purpose of this manuscript is to discuss the importance of assessment and how it relates to fraternity/sorority advising. In addition, the article highlights the ways in which assessment can be used to demonstrate student learning and development resulting from fraternity and sorority involvement

    The spin vector of Venus determined from Magellan data

    A control network of the north polar region of Venus has been established by selecting and measuring control points on full-resolution radar strips. The measurements were incorporated into a least-squares adjustment program that improved initial estimates of the coordinates of the control points, pole direction, and rotation rate of Venus. The current dataset contains 4206 measurements of 606 points on 619 radar strips. The accuracy of the determination is driven by spacecraft ephemeris errors. An accurate estimate of the rotation period of Venus was obtained by applying an ephemeris improvement technique. The second cycle closure orbits improved ephemeris solutions for 40 orbits (376-384, 520-528, 588-592, 658-668, 1002-1010, 1408-1412, 1746-1764, and 2166-2170) are included and fixed in the geodetic control computations, thus trying the network to the J2000 coordinate system
