Aureobacterium resistens sp. nov., exhibiting vancomycin resistance and teicoplanin susceptibility

    Get PDF
Two similar strains of a coryneform bacterium were isolated from human clinical material. Both strains were resistant to vancomycin but susceptible to teicoplanin. Detailed biochemical, chemotaxonomical, and molecular genetic investigations revealed that both isolates were members of a hitherto undescribed species of the genus Aureobacterium. The name Aureobacterium resistens sp. nov. is proposed for the new bacterium and the type strain is CCUG 3831

    Radion Induced Brane Preheating

When the interbrane separation in compact Randall-Sundrum models is stabilized via the Goldberger-Wise mechanism, a potential is generated for the four dimensional field that encodes this geometric information, the so-called radion. Due to its origin as a part of the full five dimensional metric, the radion couples directly to particles on both branes. We exhibit the exponential growth in the number of brane particles due to parametric amplification from radion oscillations and discuss some of the consequences of this process for brane cosmology.Comment: 4 pages, uses ReVTeX, 3 postscript figure

Predicting the tensile properties of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V via electron beam deposition

Additively manufactured materials are gaining wide attention owing to the manufacturing benefits as it results in near net shape components. It is well known that the manufacturing processes affects the performance of the components via microstructural features and the mechanical properties. There is an urgent need to understand the processing-structure-property-performance relationship for the materials manufactures via such innovative techniques. Strategies are needed to quantify and modify the mechanical properties. This study assists to design and tailor the process parameters based on the final properties required. Current work predicts the yield strength of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V with different post heat treatments. A thermal model predicted by ABAQUS is fed into an implementation of Langmuir equation that predicts the chemistry which is then used in a phenomenological equation predicting the yield strength. The model is confirmed via experiments showing less than 2% deviation from the predicated properties. A statistical model gives design allowables that have an uncertainty of less than 1 ksi

Preservation of the metaproteome: variability of protein preservation in ancient dental calculus.

    Get PDF
Proteomic analysis of dental calculus is emerging as a powerful tool for disease and dietary characterisation of archaeological populations. To better understand the variability in protein results from dental calculus, we analysed 21 samples from three Roman-period populations to compare: 1) the quantity of extracted protein; 2) the number of mass spectral queries; and 3) the number of peptide spectral matches and protein identifications. We found little correlation between the quantity of calculus analysed and total protein identifications, as well as no systematic trends between site location and protein preservation. We identified a wide range of individual variability, which may be associated with the mechanisms of calculus formation and/or post-depositional contamination, in addition to taphonomic factors. Our results suggest dental calculus is indeed a stable, long-term reservoir of proteins as previously reported, but further systematic studies are needed to identify mechanisms associated with protein entrapment and survival in dental calculus

RS1 Cosmology as Brane Dynamics in an AdS/Schwarzschild Bulk

    Get PDF
We explore various facets of the cosmology of the Randall-Sundrum scenario with two branes by considering the dynamics of the branes moving in a bulk AdS/Schwarzschild geometry. This approach allows us both to understand in more detail and from a different perspective the role of the stabilization of the hierarchy in the brane cosmology, as well as to extend to the situation where the metric contains a horizon. In particular, we explicitly determine how the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism perturbs the background bulk geometry to produce a realistic cosmology.Comment: 9 pages, uses ReVTeX, no figure

Tidal dynamics and mangrove carbon sequestration during the Oligo-Miocene in the South China Sea

    Get PDF
Modern mangroves are among the most carbon-rich biomes on Earth, but their long-term (≥10 6 years) impact on the global carbon cycle is unknown. The extent, productivity and preservation of mangroves are controlled by the interplay of tectonics, global sea level and sedimentation, including tide, wave and fluvial processes. The impact of these processes on mangrove-bearing successions in the Oligo-Miocene of the South China Sea (SCS) is evaluated herein. Palaeogeographic reconstructions, palaeotidal modelling and facies analysis suggest that elevated tidal range and bed shear stress optimized mangrove development along tide-influenced tropical coastlines. Preservation of mangrove organic carbon (OC) was promoted by high tectonic subsidence and fluvial sediment supply. Lithospheric storage of OC in peripheral SCS basins potentially exceeded 4,000 Gt (equivalent to 2,000 p.p.m. of atmospheric CO2). These results highlight the crucial impact of tectonic and oceanographic processes on mangrove OC sequestration within the global carbon cycle on geological timescales
