A Comparison of Energy Usage in the Home Canning of Tomato Juice

    Get PDF
A study on the heat processing of tomato juice was conducted using a low water level (LWL) hot water bath in comparison to the conventional recommended high water level (HWL) bath procedure. The L WL bath contained one-fifth the amount of water recommended for the HWL bath. The results indicated that the temperatures of the juice during processing were similar in both procedures. However, use of the HWL bath required 59 minutes and 1838 watt-hours of electricity to heat the bath and process hot packed (920 C) juice for 15 minutes. In contrast, only 34 minutes and 1065 watt-hours ofelectricity were required when the L WL bath was used

Engine Mount Design Strategies to Mitigate Linear Vibrations in a Tata Nano

In 2009, Tata Motors launched the Tata Nano as a low-cost alternative to two and three-wheeled vehicles for India’s growing middle class. However, the Nano failed to meet these expectations as it developed a negative perception amongst Indian consumers partly due to its poor Noise Vibration Harshness (NVH) characteristics. In this paper, we examine strategies to reduce the transmission of linear vibrations from the engine felt inside the cabin. Specifically, it includes analysis of the hardness of damping rubber in the engine mounts as well as geometry of the engine mounts. The results of this analysis suggest that Tata Motors can reduce the vibrations transmitted from the engine by decreasing the hardness of the damping rubber. Additionally, Tata Motors can further reduce the transmitted vibrations by decreasing mount angle. It was found that a reduction in mount angle from 45° to 30° reduced the amplitude of the transmitted vibrations by 23%. Topics: Engines , Design , Linear vibrationTata Motor

Monitoring programs for species of conservation concern are notoriously flawed. Notably, many monitoring programs do not establish trigger points or a level of decline in population size that will result in management action. Here we report on the monitoring program for the Flat-tailed Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma mcallii) that has been established across its range throughout the United States by the Flat-tailed Horned Lizard Interagency Coordinating Committee (FTHL ICC). Impor- tantly, we examine whether a trigger point of 30% decline was detected in these populations. Between 2007 and 2013, we detected 955 P. mcallii on 2,714 occupancy surveys and captured 715 individuals on 1,861 demographic surveys. Occupancy surveys have demonstrated that the species occurs through- out the management areas and occupancy estimates range from 0.25–0.89. Demographic surveys have demonstrated that population trends over time are correlated across all management areas; however, they are probably driven by factors at smaller geographic scales. During the study no population decline \u3e 30% was detected after accounting for natural and stochastic fluctuations. Continued mon- itoring is called for to gain a greater understanding of what is driving the trends in populations both range-wide and at the scale of management areas

Vaccine breakthrough hypoxemic COVID-19 pneumonia in patients with auto-Abs neutralizing type I IFNs

Life-threatening `breakthrough' cases of critical COVID-19 are attributed to poor or waning antibody response to the SARS- CoV-2 vaccine in individuals already at risk. Pre-existing autoantibodies (auto-Abs) neutralizing type I IFNs underlie at least 15% of critical COVID-19 pneumonia cases in unvaccinated individuals; however, their contribution to hypoxemic breakthrough cases in vaccinated people remains unknown. Here, we studied a cohort of 48 individuals ( age 20-86 years) who received 2 doses of an mRNA vaccine and developed a breakthrough infection with hypoxemic COVID-19 pneumonia 2 weeks to 4 months later. Antibody levels to the vaccine, neutralization of the virus, and auto- Abs to type I IFNs were measured in the plasma. Forty-two individuals had no known deficiency of B cell immunity and a normal antibody response to the vaccine. Among them, ten (24%) had auto-Abs neutralizing type I IFNs (aged 43-86 years). Eight of these ten patients had auto-Abs neutralizing both IFN-a2 and IFN-., while two neutralized IFN-omega only. No patient neutralized IFN-ss. Seven neutralized 10 ng/mL of type I IFNs, and three 100 pg/mL only. Seven patients neutralized SARS-CoV-2 D614G and the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) efficiently, while one patient neutralized Delta slightly less efficiently. Two of the three patients neutralizing only 100 pg/mL of type I IFNs neutralized both D61G and Delta less efficiently. Despite two mRNA vaccine inoculations and the presence of circulating antibodies capable of neutralizing SARS-CoV-2, auto-Abs neutralizing type I IFNs may underlie a significant proportion of hypoxemic COVID-19 pneumonia cases, highlighting the importance of this particularly vulnerable population

Atlanta GA, USA.Passage of malaria-infected blood through a two-layered column composed of acid-washed glass beads and CF 11 cellulose removes white cells from parasitized blood. However, because use of glass beads and CF 11 cellulose requires filtration of infected blood separately through these two resins and the addition of ADP, the procedure is time-consuming and may be inappropriate for use in the field, especially when large numbers of blood samples are to be treated. Our modification of this process yields parasitized cells free of contaminating leukocytes, and because of its operational simplicity, large numbers of blood samples can be processed. Our procedure also compares well with those using expensive commercial Sepacell resins in its ability to separate leukocytes from whole blood. As a test of usefulness in molecular biologic investigations, the parasites obtained from the blood of malaria-infected patients using the modified procedure yield genomic DNA whose single copy gene, the circumsporozoite gene, efficiently amplifies by polymerase chain reaction
