Navigational and Environmental Measurement System (NEMS)
The NEMS concept and design were initiated from the need to measure and record positional and environmental information during aircraft flights of developmental science research instrumentation. The unit was designed as a stand-alone system which could serve the needs of instruments whose developmental nature did not justify the cost and complexity of including these measurements within the instrument data system. Initially, the system was comprised of a Loran-C receiver and a portable IBM compatible computer recording position and time. Later, the system was interfaced with the Wallops aircraft inertial navigation system (INS), and various other sensors were supplied and shared by the Goddard science users. Real-time position mapping on video monitors was added for investigator's use and information. In 1987, the use of a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver was included in some missions. A total configuration of the system and the various sensors which can be incorporated are shown
Josephson junctions in thin and narrow rectangular superconducting strips
I consider a Josephson junction crossing the middle of a thin rectangular
superconducting strip of length L and width W subjected to a perpendicular
magnetic induction B. I calculate the spatial dependence of the gauge-invariant
phase difference across the junction and the resulting B dependence of the
critical current Ic(B).Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, revised following referee's comment
TeV Gamma Rays from Geminga and the Origin of the GeV Positron Excess
The Geminga pulsar has long been one of the most intriguing MeV-GeV gamma-ray
point sources. We examine the implications of the recent Milagro detection of
extended, multi-TeV gamma-ray emission from Geminga, finding that this reveals
the existence of an ancient, powerful cosmic-ray accelerator that can plausibly
account for the multi-GeV positron excess that has evaded explanation. We
explore a number of testable predictions for gamma-ray and electron/positron
experiments (up to ~100 TeV) that can confirm the first "direct" detection of a
cosmic-ray source.Comment: 4 pages and 3 figures; Minor revisions, accepted for publication in

Detection of the Vortex Dynamic Regimes in MgB2 by Third Harmonic AC Susceptibility Measurements
In a type-II superconductor the generation of higher harmonics in the
magnetic response to an alternating magnetic field is a consequence of the
non-linearity in the I-V relationship. The shape of the current-voltage (I-V)
curve is determined by the current dependence of the thermal activation energy
U(J) and is thus related to the dynamical regimes governing the vortex motion.
In order to investigate the vortex dynamics in MgB2 bulk superconductors we
have studied the fundamental (chi1) and third (chi3) harmonics of the ac
magnetic susceptibility. Measurements have been performed as a function of the
temperature and the dc magnetic field, up to 9 T, for various frequencies and
amplitudes of the ac field. We show that the analysis of the behaviour in
frequency of chi3(T) and chi3(B) curves can provide clear information about the
non-linearity in different regions of the I-V characteristic. By comparing the
experimental curves with numerical simulations of the non-linear diffusion
equation for the magnetic field we are able to resolve the crossover between a
dissipative regime governed by flux creep and one dominated by flux flow
phenomena.Comment: to be published in "Horizons in Superconductivity Research" (Nova

Force measurements of a superconducting-film actuator for a cryogenic interferometric gravitational-wave detector
We measured forces applied by an actuator with a YBCO film at near 77 K for
the Large-scale Cryogenic Gravitational-wave Telescope (LCGT) project. An
actuator consisting of both a YBCO film of 1.6 micrometers thickness and 0.81
square centimeters area and a solenoid coil exerted a force of up to 0.2 mN on
a test mass. The presented actuator system can be used to displace the mirror
of LCGT for fringe lock of the interferometer.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Magnetostrictive behaviour of thin superconducting disks
Flux-pinning-induced stress and strain distributions in a thin disk
superconductor in a perpendicular magnetic field is analyzed. We calculate the
body forces, solve the magneto-elastic problem and derive formulas for all
stress and strain components, including the magnetostriction . The
flux and current density profiles in the disk are assumed to follow the Bean
model. During a cycle of the applied field the maximum tensile stress is found
to occur approximately midway between the maximum field and the remanent state.
An effective relationship between this overall maximum stress and the peak
field is found.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Supercond. Sci. Technol., Proceed.

Response of thin-film SQUIDs to applied fields and vortex fields: Linear SQUIDs
In this paper we analyze the properties of a dc SQUID when the London
penetration depth \lambda is larger than the superconducting film thickness d.
We present equations that govern the static behavior for arbitrary values of
\Lambda = \lambda^2/d relative to the linear dimensions of the SQUID. The
SQUID's critical current I_c depends upon the effective flux \Phi, the magnetic
flux through a contour surrounding the central hole plus a term proportional to
the line integral of the current density around this contour. While it is well
known that the SQUID inductance depends upon \Lambda, we show here that the
focusing of magnetic flux from applied fields and vortex-generated fields into
the central hole of the SQUID also depends upon \Lambda. We apply this
formalism to the simplest case of a linear SQUID of width 2w, consisting of a
coplanar pair of long superconducting strips of separation 2a, connected by two
small Josephson junctions to a superconducting current-input lead at one end
and by a superconducting lead at the other end. The central region of this
SQUID shares many properties with a superconducting coplanar stripline. We
calculate magnetic-field and current-density profiles, the inductance
(including both geometric and kinetic inductances), magnetic moments, and the
effective area as a function of \Lambda/w and a/w.Comment: 18 pages, 20 figures, revised for Phys. Rev. B, the main revisions

c-axis electrodynamics of ybco
New measurements of surface impedance in ybco show that the c-axis
penetration depth and conductivity below Tc exhibit behaviour different from
that observed in the planes. The c-axis penetration depth never has the linear
temperature dependence seen in the ab-plane. Instead of the conductivity peak
seen in the planes, the c-axis microwave conductivity falls to low values in
the superconducting state, then rises slightly below 20K. These results show
that c-axis transport remains incoherent below Tc, even though this is one of
the least anisotropic cuprate superconductors.Comment: 4-page
Thin superconducting disk with B-dependent Jc: Flux and current distributions
The critical state in a superconducting thin circular disk with an arbitrary
magnetic field dependence of the critical sheet current, Jc(B), is analyzed.
With an applied field Ba perpendicular to the disk, a set of coupled integral
equations for the flux and current distributions is derived. The equations are
solved numerically, and flux and current profiles are presented graphically for
several commonly used Jc(B) dependences. It is shown that for small Ba the flux
penetration depth can be described by an effective Bean model with a
renormalized Jc entering the leading term. We argue that these results are
qualitatively correct for thin superconductors of any shape. The results
contrast the parallel geometry behavior, where at small Ba the B-dependence of
the critical current can be ignored.Comment: RevTeX, 7 pages including 8 figure
