    A snapshot of translation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis during exponential growth and nutrient starvation revealed by ribosome profiling

    Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which causes tuberculosis, can undergo prolonged periods of non-replicating persistence in the host. The mechanisms underlying this are not fully understood, but translational regulation is thought to play a role. A large proportion of mRNA transcripts expressed in M. tuberculosis lack canonical bacterial translation initiation signals, but little is known about the implications of this for fine-tuning of translation. Here, we perform ribosome profiling to characterize the translational landscape of M. tuberculosis under conditions of exponential growth and nutrient starvation. Our data reveal robust, widespread translation of non-canonical transcripts and point toward different translation initiation mechanisms compared to canonical Shine-Dalgarno transcripts. During nutrient starvation, patterns of ribosome recruitment vary, suggesting that regulation of translation in this pathogen is more complex than originally thought. Our data represent a rich resource for others seeking to understand translational regulation in bacterial pathogens

    Trustworthy placements: Improving quality and resilience in collaborative attack detection

    Abstract In distributed and collaborative attack detection systems decisions are made on the basis of the events reported by many sensors, e.g., Intrusion Detection Systems placed across various network locations. In some cases such events originate at locations over which we have little control, for example because they belong to an organisation that shares information with us. Blindly accepting such reports as real encompasses several risks, as sensors might be dishonest, unreliable or simply having been compromised. In these situations trust plays an important role in deciding whether alerts should be believed or not. In this work we present an approach to maximise the quality of the information gathered in such systems and the resilience against dishonest behaviours. We introduce the notion of trust diversity amongst sensors and argue that detection configurations with such a property perform much better in many respects. Using reputation as a proxy for trust, we introduce an adaptive scheme to dynamically reconfigure the network of detection sensors. Experiments confirm an overall increase both in detection quality and resilience against compromise and misbehaviour

    Random Exchange Disorder in the Spin-1/2 XXZ Chain

    The one-dimensional XXZ model is studied in the presence of disorder in the Heisenberg Exchange Integral. Recent predictions obtained from renormalization group calculations are investigated numerically using a Lanczos algorithm on chains of up to 18 sites. It is found that in the presence of strong X-Y-symmetric random exchange couplings, a ``random singlet'' phase with quasi-long-range order in the spin-spin correlations persists. As the planar anisotropy is varied, the full zero-temperature phase diagram is obtained and compared with predictions of Doty and Fisher [Phys. Rev.     CSCW researchers have increasingly come to realize that material work setting and its population of artefacts play a crucial part in coordination of distributed or co-located work. This paper uses the notion of physicality as a basis to understand cooperative work. Using examples from an ongoing fieldwork on cooperative design practices, it provides a conceptual understanding of physicality and shows that material settings and co-worker’s working practices play an important role in understanding physicality of cooperative design

    Road exposure and the detectability of birds in field surveys

    Road ecology, the study of the impacts of roads and their traffic on wildlife, including birds, is a rapidly growing field, with research showing effects on local avian population densities up to several kilometres from a road. However, in most studies, the effects of roads on the detectability of birds by surveyors are not accounted for. This could be a significant source of error in estimates of the impacts of roads on birds and could also affect other studies of bird populations. Using road density, traffic volume and bird count data from across Great Britain, we assess the relationships between roads and detectability of a range of bird species. Of 51 species analysed, the detectability of 36 was significantly associated with road exposure, in most cases inversely. Across the range of road exposure recorded for each species, the mean positive change in detectability was 52% and the mean negative change was 36%, with the strongest negative associations found in smaller-bodied species and those for which aural cues are more important in detection. These associations between road exposure and detectability could be caused by a reduction in surveyors’ abilities to hear birds or by changes in birds’ behaviour, making them harder or easier to detect. We suggest that future studies of the impacts of roads on populations of birds or other taxa, and other studies using survey data from road-exposed areas, should account for the potential impacts of roads on detectability.The BBS is jointly funded by the BTO, JNCC and RSPB.     Characterization of halogen-bridged binuclear metal complexes as hybridized two-band materials

    We study the electronic structure of halogen-bridged binuclear metal (MMX) complexes with a two-band Peierls-Hubbard model. Based on a symmetry argument, various density-wave states are derived and characterized. The ground-state phase diagram is drawn within the Hartree-Fock approximation, while the thermal behavior is investigated using a quantum Monte Carlo method. All the calculations conclude that a typical MMX compound Pt_2(CH_3CS_2)_4I should indeed be regarded as a d-p-hybridized two-band material, where the oxidation of the halogen ions must be observed even in the ground state, whereas another MMX family (NH_4)_4[Pt_2(P_2O_5H_2)_4X] may be treated as single-band materials.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures embedded, to be published in Phys.     Pulsed Magnetic Field Measurements of the Composite Fermion Effective Mass

    Magnetotransport measurements of Composite Fermions (CF) are reported in 50 T pulsed magnetic fields. The CF effective mass is found to increase approximately linearly with the effective field B∗B^*, in agreement with our earlier work at lower fields. For a B∗B^* of 14 T it reaches 1.6me1.6m_e, over 20 times the band edge electron mass. Data from all fractions are unified by the single parameter B∗B^* for all the samples studied over a wide range of electron densities. The energy gap is found to increase like B∗\sqrt{B^*} at high fields.Comment: Has final table, will LaTeX without error
