'An island between' : multiple migrations and the repertoires of a St Helenian identity

    Get PDF
The small Island of St Helena is a British Overseas Territory. In 1981 the British Nationality Act denied the islanders their British citizenship rights and in 2002 their rights as British citizens were fully restored. As a consequence of the return of British citizenship, a new wave of migration has occurred whereby many islanders are migrating to the UK. Embedded within an ethnographic framework, the thesis draws upon 68 interviews undertaken with St Helenians both on and off the island. Drawing upon the islanders stories, narratives and repertoires, this thesis oscillates between the two fields of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies. The analysis combines the anthropological truth claims of the community, as well as utilizes a post-structuralist approach that investigates the data for a micro understanding of discourse, ideology, identity, nuance and complexity, that demonstrates the paradoxical investments for the islanders. For cultural analytical triangulation, the theoretical concepts of Althusser, Bourdieu, Plummer and Bakhtin have been drawn upon, to investigate the feelings, emotions, cultural values and symbolic practices as demonstrated by the St Helenian community themselves. This thesis is a study of St Helenianness alongside Britishness and Islandness. Migration, identity, Diaspora, transnationalism and citizenship are common themes within this thesis, but the contribution is specifically to island studies

Improving the quantitative research skills of Welsh Baccalaureate teachers through university engagement

    Get PDF
In 2015 the re-designed Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification (WBQ) was launched and, for the first time, students undertaking the qualification were required to complete the Skills Challenge Certificate (SCC). Consisting of four components: the Individual Project, the Enterprise and Employability Challenge, the Global Citizenship Challenge, and the Community Challenge, the SCC aims to enable learners to develop seven skills needed for education, employment and life. The Individual Project requires students to undertake a research project that includes analysing data using/utilising quantitative data analysis skills. This paper identifies the teaching of such quantitative skills as a difficulty for some teachers involved in the delivery of the qualification drawing on recent engagement work between Cardiff University and schools and colleges in South Wales. It argues that universities have an opportunity to engage with schools, teachers and pupils in the delivery of quantitative research skills that can be beneficial for both schools and universities

Establishing Partnerships To Provide Health Education In Appalachian Schools: An Approach To Service Learning

    Get PDF
Service learning is a form of collaboration between an educational facility and a community agency. The concept of service learning is an innovative teaching method designed to benefit both collaborating partners through respect of each otherā€™s knowledge, expertise and skills. Needs and goals of both partners are met through many different types of service learning projects. Examples of such projects in which the OUC nursing program has participated include health fairs in the middle and high school populations, health education in elementary classrooms, health fairs in local industry, and working with the elderly in the community. The Ohio University-Chillicothe Nursing Program, located in a section of Ohio know as Appalachia, believes in the concept of service learning to promote health and well-being in the community. Health care in the Appalachian area, particularly health promotion and disease prevention, is a challenge to health care providers as residents in this area have a fatalistic view of health - ā€œwhat will be, will beā€. Service learning projects are an excellent way to provide health promotion education to those who may not seek this out on their own. The collaborations formed between agencies and the nursing program benefit both partners. The nursing students are exposed to the health care beliefs and need of Appalachia on a first-hand basis through an innovative approach in clinical education. Community agencies benefit by being able to expand the amount of health education they can offer which increases their manpower with use of the students.

Into the wild west : an exploratory study of videoconference telemental health in social work practice

    Get PDF
This qualitative study was undertaken to explore how social workers are integrating videoconference telemental health into practice, and what their experiences have been of using videoconference telemental health to provide services. Twelve social workers with experience using videoconference telemental health participated in a semi-structured interview over Skype. The interview included questions about the clinicians\u27 practices; how they started using videoconference telemental health to provide services; their attitudes\u27 towards the use of the technology; and ethical dilemmas they have encountered while using videoconference telemental health. Ten of the clinicians interviewed were in private practice, and two worked in larger institutional settings. The major findings were the agreement by all clinicians in the study that videoconference telemental health has the ability to expand access to services. A majority of clinicians also reported that it provided a unique treatment experience that was beneficial to their clients; that the technology is less than perfect and can be disruptive; and that there is a lack of clear ethical and legal guidelines regarding the use of this technology in practice

PRICING STRATEGIES FOR ONLINE MULTIPLAYER GAMES

    Get PDF
This dissertation examines the different pricing strategies available to online multiplayer game publishers. We develop mathematical models of the pricing decision that the publisher engages in and conduct a numerical experiment to identify critical parameters for the pricing decision. We also develop an agent based simulation to further examine the influence of these parameters on the dynamics between the publisher and consumers and make recommendations about the conditions under which certain pricing strategies are superior to others

Oncolytic viruses and immune checkpoint inhibitors: the "hot" new power couple

    Get PDF
Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have revolutionized cancer care and shown remarkable efficacy clinically. This efficacy is, however, limited to subsets of patients with significant infiltration of lymphocytes into the tumour microenvironment. To extend their efficacy to patients who fail to respond or achieve durable responses, it is now becoming evident that complex combinations of immunomodulatory agents may be required to extend efficacy to patients with immunologically ā€œcoldā€ tumours. Oncolytic viruses (OVs) have the capacity to selectively replicate within and kill tumour cells, resulting in the induction of immunogenic cell death and the augmentation of anti-tumour immunity, and have emerged as a promising modality for combination therapy to overcome the limitations seen with ICIs. Pre-clinical and clinical data have demonstrated that OVs can increase immune cell infiltration into the tumour and induce anti-tumour immunity, thus changing a ā€œcoldā€ tumour microenvironment that is commonly associated with poor response to ICIs, to a ā€œhotā€ microenvironment which can render patients more susceptible to ICIs. Here, we review the major viral vector platforms used in OV clinical trials, their success when used as a monotherapy and when combined with adjuvant ICIs, as well as pre-clinical studies looking at the effectiveness of encoding OVs to deliver ICIs locally to the tumour microenvironment through transgene expression

Use Of Hand-Held Devices With First Year Associate Degree Nursing Students

    Get PDF
The use of personal digital assistants (PDAs), hand-held devices and/or IPod Touches, is becoming widespread in the health care field. Many medical and nursing schools require their students to purchase a PDA prior to the beginning of their classes. PDAā€™s can carry information directly to the patientā€™s beside for instant retrieval of information. What does this mean to nursing students and clinical instructors? It means that up-to-date information is available to the student and clinical instructor in seconds, as opposed to searching for a reference book only to find it is outdated and 10 to 15 minutes of valuable time lost. This study identified associate degree nursing studentsā€™ use and application in the clinical using PDAs. Results of this study indicated that associate degree nursing students are very satisfied with the use of PDAs in the clinical setting. This study was funded by the Ohio University Regional Faculty Research Fund.

NORTH CAROLINA CHARTER SCHOOLS: SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORSā€™ PERCEPTIONS OF COMPETITION IN K-12 EDUCATION

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to explore traditional public school administratorsā€™ perceptions of competition in North Carolina public education after the implementation of charter school legislation. Surveys of traditional public school administrators at both the district and school levels are analyzed. Interviews of a purposeful sample of traditional public school administrators are used to further explain survey responses. Based on survey and interview responses, North Carolina charter schools have a limited effect on allocative and productive efficiency in NC public K-12 education. Survey respondentsā€™ most frequent description of charter schools was ā€œschools that serve a particular population.ā€ Interviewed administrators also note that charter schools draw families and students who are seeking a specialized pedagogy or curriculum that may be targeted for a specific student population. Study findings show that traditional public school administrators are not using charter schools as a factor in strategic planning thus limiting the effect on productive efficiency and of creating competition in public education. The effect of charter schools varies across school districts in North Carolina. In some districts, they are a safety valve to partially alleviate overcrowded schools and in others they create a niche for families interested in educational alternatives to the traditional public schools system

The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the perceptions of college instructors and high school teachers regarding the purpose and benefits of the Early College High School program in North Carolina. College instructors and high school teachers, from all 69 Early College High Schools in North Carolina, were invited to participate in a survey using a model that was previously designed and tested by Dr. Jason Chambers titled North Carolina Early College High School Survey. This instrument, a web based survey, was used to measure perceptions of the purpose and benefits of the Early College High School. One hundred-thirty-two high school and college instructors who have taught Early College High School students completed the studyā€˜s survey questions. A review of the results included statistically significant differences in the perception of purpose of the Early College High School between High School teachers and College instructors. The results similarly included statistically significant differences in the perception of the benefits of the Early College High School between High School teachers and College instructors. The results for the combined perception of purpose and benefits, were statistically significant among the three geographic regions; Mountain, Coastal plains, and Piedmont
