Evidence for maternal transmission fo a putative endosymbiont in the digestive gland of Pomacea canaliculata (Architaenioglossa, Ampullariidae)
The digestive gland of the apple snail Pomacea canaliculata lodges two types of pigmented corpuscles (identified as C and K corpuscles) which has been proposed as endosymbiont/s. Both corpuscular types are always present in the digestive gland of adult snails, they are released into the tubuloacinar lumen and are later expelled in the feces. On their part, hatchlings lack any C or K corpuscles in the digestive gland as well as in their feces, whereas C corpuscles appear in both the gland and feces within one week after hatching. Hence, it is possible that the detritivorous hatchlings acquire the putative C-endosymbiont from feces in the sediments where they live, i.e. through ‘lateral’ or ‘horizontal’ transmission. This possibility was put to test in an experiment in which we prevented any lateral transmission, by a 7-days aseptic culture, with no food, of aseptically obtained hatchlings. At the end of the experiment, we observed that most juveniles had survived the culture period, and hence the digestive glands and feces of survivors were studied by light microscopy of resin embedded, toluidine blue-stained sections. All studied glands and fecal samples showed C corpuscles. It is concluded that lateral transmission of the endosymbiont, if any, is not indispensable for the acquisition of the endosymbiont by hatchlings.Fil: Koch, Eduardo. Tensor triangulated category structures in the derived category of a variety with big (anti-)canonical bundle
Let be a smooth projective variety over with big
(anti-)canonical bundle. It is known that in this situation the Balmer spectrum
of the tensor triangulated category of perfect complexes of
equipped with the derived tensor product recovers
the space . In this work we study the possible tensor triangulated category
structures one can put on . As an application we prove a monoidal
version of the well-known Bondal-Orlov reconstruction theorem
Davydov-Yetter cohomology for Tensor Triangulated Categories
One way to understand the deformation theory of a tensor category is
through its Davydov-Yetter cohomology which in degree 3 and
4 is known to control respectively first order deformations of the
associativity coherence of and their obstructions. \\ In this work we take
the task of developing an analogous theory for the deformation theory of tensor
triangulated categories with a focus on derived categories coming from
algebraic geometry. We introduce the concept of perfect pseudo dg-tensor
structure on an appropriate dg-category as a truncated
dg-lift of a tensor triangulated category structure on and
we define a double complex and we see that the 4th
cohomology group of the total complex of
contains information about infinitesimal first order
deformations of the tensor structure.Comment: Article draws extensively from author's PhD thesis, found in HAL

Near-infrared follow-up to the May 2008 activation of SGR 1627-41
On 28 May 2008, the Swift satellite detected the first reactivation of SGR
1627-41 since its discovery in 1998.
Following this event we began an observing campaign in near infrared
wavelengths to search for a possible counterpart inside the error circle of
this SGR, which is expected to show flaring activity simultaneous to the high
energy flares or at least some variability as compared to the quiescent state.
For the follow-up we used the 0.6m REM robotic telescope at La Silla
Observatory, which allowed a fast response within 24 hours and, through
director discretionary time, the 8.2m Very Large Telescope at Paranal
Observatory. There, we observed with NACO to produce high angular resolution
imaging with the aid of adaptive optics.
These observations represent the fastest near infrared observations after an
activation of this SGR and the deepest and highest spatial resolution
observations of the Chandra error circle.
5 sources are detected in the immediate vicinity of the most precise X-ray
localisation of this source. For 4 of them we do not detect variability,
although the X-ray counterpart experimented a significant decay during our
observation period. The 5th source is only detected in one epoch, where we have
the best image quality, so no variability constrains can be imposed and remains
as the only plausible counterpart. We can impose a limit of Ks > 21.6
magnitudes to any other counterpart candidate one week after the onset of the
activity. Our adaptive optics imaging, with a resolution of 0.2" provides a
reference frame for subsequent studies of future periods of activity.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
This objective was to evaluate the effects of pre-drying treatments such as osmotic dehydration, antioxidants, and
blanching using banana.
A dry samples with different pre-treatments were performed to obtain the isotherms of the monolayer, which has a
direct relationship with the shelf life.
Once drying processes, it was determined the rate of drying where the product has the highest rate of drying is that
which was not subjected to any pre-treatment, which is related to life.
Subsequently, in addition to the experiment, we determined the shelf life, using the method of Theodore Labuza,
proving the relationship and the value of the monolayers of the isotherms and the values of drying rate, which the
sample without pre-treatment showed the highest value.
Finally, we statistically analyzed the results, with a design of experiments, comparing the response variables with a
significance level of 95%
Perceptions of Fishermen Households on the Long-Term Impact of Coastal Resources Management in Panguil Bay
Coastal resources management (CRM) has flourished as a management approach for attaining a more sustainable form of economic development in the coastal areas of the Philippines. Its proliferation, coupled with the reasonably long time it has been in implementation, now calls for an evaluation of its long-term impact as a management and development approach. In this study, the long-term impact of CRM is evaluated not from the perspectives of technical people but based on the perception of its intended primary beneficiaries--the fishermen households. It does so not by looking into a specific CRM program or project but by observing the succession of CRM activities conducted in a single coastal area--Panguil Bay, Mindanao--over many years. The objectives were to ascertain if CRM works, identify its major constraints if it does not, and recommend future courses of actions to address the constraints.coastal resources management, long-term impact indicators, ladder diagram, Panguil Bay
