    In this paper an initial approach to the pottery extracted from the excavations of the Cerro del Sombrerete, in Madinat Ilbira (Granada), is made. Thiscomes from an urban context from the IXth-Xth centuries AD., the same moment in which the Cordobese power is rising.     Defining new technological traditions of Late Islamic Arabia: a view on Bahlā Ware from al-Ain (UAE) and the lead-barium glaze production

In this paper, the monochrome glazed Bahlā Ware from al-Ain dated between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries (Late Islamic Arabian Period) has been analysed aiming to reconstruct the production technology of the ceramic fabrics and glazes. The results of the petrographic and chemical analyses suggest a unique technological tradition embedded in the culture of Late Islamic Arabia. This tradition incorporates the production of a lead-barium glaze coated over a single type of ceramic fabric that spans for nearly three centuries. Since this is the first evidence for the production of a lead-barium glaze in the Islamic World, the origins of this technology remain uncertain, but the results of the ceramic petrography identify the Omani Peninsula as the most likely source for the ceramic fabric. During the economic peak of al-Ain in the eighteenth century, this tradition shows signs of technological diversity visible in the appearance of new fabrics and glazes. Considering the wide distribution of Bahlā Ware in the Western Indian Ocean, understanding of the production technology and provenance of al-Ain’s ceramics has important implications for archaeological interpretation

    Petrographic analysis of ceramics from Murwab, an early Islamic site in Qatar.

    Murwab is one of the most important early Islamic archaeological villages in the Arabian Peninsula and the Persian Gulf, and one of the best-known. Excavated since the 1950s, the site has yielded a complete pottery assemblage which allows the site to be dated from the late eighth to the late ninth century AD. This paper presents an analysis of the ceramics of Murwab. The analysis is undertaken on a selection of 134 pottery sherds of common ware/‘kitchen’ ware without glaze and encompasses a petrographic study and elemental analysis using wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (WDXRF). The results of the petrographic analysis and some preliminary thoughts on the chemical analysis are discussed in the text. Twelve ceramic fabrics have been detected in the assemblage studied. The composition of the fabrics allows some preliminary suggestions about provenance to be drawn: none of the fabrics was locally made in Qatar and most of them seem to come from Mesopotamia, eastern Arabia, and southern Iran. The technology of the ceramics reveals an approach to the manufacture of common wares that is characteristic of the Upper and Central Gulf (corresponding roughly to the Gulf coast west of the Musandam Peninsula, including Khuzestan and Bushehr in Iran). It is not known when this technological approach started, but it does not seem to be documented in the Bronze Age. </p

    Effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and PD-L1 expression in breast cancer and its clinical significance

    Abstract Background The effects of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on immune markers remain largely unknown. The specific aim of this study was to assess stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) protein expression in a cohort of breast cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Methods Using quantitative immunofluorescence, we investigated stromal TILs and PD-L1 protein expression in pre-treatment and residual breast cancer tissue from a Yale Cancer Center patient cohort of 58 patients diagnosed with breast cancer from 2003 to 2009 and treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. We compared the TIL count and PD-L1 status in paired pre-treatment and residual cancer tissues and correlated changes and baseline levels with survival. Results Of the 58 patients, 46 (79.3%) had hormone-positive and 34 (58.6%) had node-positive breast cancer. Eighty-six percent of residual cancer tissues had TIL infiltration and 17% had PD-L1 expression. There was a trend for higher TIL counts in postchemotherapy compared to prechemotherapy samples (p = 0.09). Increase in TIL count was associated with longer 5-year recurrence-free survival (p = 0.02, HR = 3.9, 95% CI = 1.179–15.39). PD-L1 expression (both stromal and tumor cells) was significantly lower in post-treatment samples (p = 0.001). Change in PD-L1 expression after therapy or TILs and PD-L1 expression in the posttreatment samples did not correlate with survival. Conclusions Increase in stromal TILs in residual cancer compared to pretreatment tissue is associated with improved recurrence-free survival. Despite a trend for increasing TIL counts, PD-L1 expression decreased in residual disease compared to pretreatment samples

    Current m-Health scenarios in the smart living era, as the interpretation of the smart city at each person&rsquo;s level, present several challenges associated with interoperability between different clinical devices and applications. The Continua Health Alliance establishes design guidelines to standardize application communication to guarantee interoperability among medical devices. In this paper, we describe the implementation of two IEEE agents for oxygen saturation level (SpO2) measurements and electrocardiogram (ECG) data acquisition, respectively, and a smartphone IEEE manager for validation. We developed both IEEE agents over the Bluetooth Health Device Profile following the Continua guidelines and they are part of a telemonitoring system. This system was evaluated in a sample composed of 10 volunteers (mean age 29.8 &plusmn; 7.1 y/o; 5 females) under supervision of an expert cardiologist. The evaluation consisted of measuring the SpO2 and ECG signal sitting and at rest, before and after exercising for 15 min. Physiological measurements were assessed and compared against commercial devices, and our expert physician did not find any relevant differences in the ECG signal. Additionally, the system was assessed when acquiring and processing different heart rate data to prove that warnings were generated when the heart rate was under/above the thresholds for bradycardia and tachycardia, respectively

    Grain and Flour Wheat Quality Modified by Genotype, Availability of Nitrogen, and Growing Season

    The objective of the present study was to determine physical and chemical parameters that determine grain and flour quality of wheat grown in Mexico’s highlands (Toluca, Estado de Mexico) as a response of nitrogen fertilization and growing season. Experiments were carried out in winter-spring 2010 (irrigation) and summer-autumn 2011 (rainfed) season cycles. Nine wheat cultivars were tested under four levels of nitrogen fertilization (N00, N100, N200, and N300 kg N·ha−1) with a population density of 336 seeds m−2. For each growing season and N rate, three replications were performed for each experiment under a randomized complete block design. Best quality indexes were obtained in the winter-spring cycle as a result of genetic variability. Nitrogen availability modified significantly some quality parameters (grain and flour protein, test weight, and hardness) obtaining the highest values at a rate of 100 kg N·ha−1. On the other hand, volume of sedimentation showed positive effects only at a rate of 300 kg N·ha−1. This rate showed positive effects on grain and flour protein, sedimentation volume, and hardness during the summer-autumn cycle. Eneida F94, Tollocan F2005, and Urbina S2007 cultivars presented the highest grain and flour protein content of tested varieties. Finally, Eneida F94 and Tollocan F2005 presented the highest test weight and flour percentage
