Strategies for the planning of sustainable mobility: An exploratory study in Brazil

O crescimento acelerado da população nas cidades brasileiras, aliado à falta de um planejamento urbano adequado, tem o problema da mobilidade urbana como uma de suas consequências mais aparentes. O artigo aborda os impactos da expansão urbana na mobilidade para o município de São José dos Campos/SP. A falta de integração entre os diferentes modais e os impactos causados no transporte urbano no cenário municipal são os principais pontos que motivam este estudo. Assim, o objetivo do trabalho foi compreender e estruturar esta situação problemática e propor ações estratégicas, com vistas à promoção da mobilidade urbana sustentável naquele município. Para isto, será adotada uma abordagem multimetodológica que consistirá na combinação dos Mapas Cognitivos com o SCA (Strategic Choice Approach), apoiado pela utilização da matriz GUT (Gravidade/Urgência/Tendência). Como resultado foi possível definir um pacote de compromissos de decisões e ações estratégicas, que visem melhorar a infraestrutura de transporte atual e preparar o município para futuras atualizações, já considerando a multimodalidade como alternativa.The accelerated population growth in Brazilian cities, together with the lack of adequate urban planning, has the problem of urban mobility as one of its most apparent consequences. The article discusses the impacts of urban expansion on mobility for the city of São José dos Campos / SP. The lack of integration between the different modalities and the impacts caused in urban transport in the municipal scenario are the main points that motivate this study. Thus, the objective of the work is to understand and to structure this problematic situation and to propose strategic actions, in order to promote sustainable urban mobility in that city. For this, a multi-method approach is adopted, which consists of a combination of Cognitive Maps with the Strategic Choice Approach (SCA), supported by the use of the GUT (Severity / Urgency / Trend) matrix. As a result, it was possible to define a package of commitments for strategic decisions and actions, which has for its purpose to improve the current transportation infrastructure and to prepare the city for future upgrades, considering multimodality as an alternative

Multi-Criteria decision aid methodology applied to highway truck selection at a mining company

In all mining projects, transportation costs influence net profit, justifying economic feasibility studies before transport fleet acquisition or replacement. These studies can provide the best loading and hauling equipment combination to meet production demands at lower costs by evaluating the alternatives available in the market. When there is more than one solution with similar costs and technical specifications, decision-making technics were considered to be used. Herein is presented the case of selecting hauling trucks used to transport run of mine (ROM) ore at a bauxite mining company, located in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, using the Multi-Criteria Decision Aid methodology (MCDA)

A economia na utilização de areia descartada de fundição na construção civil: estudo de caso na cidade de João Pessoa, Paraíba

As indústrias siderúrgicas brasileiras geram, em média, 145 mil toneladas por mês de areia descartada de fundição (ADF) ou resíduos de areia de fundição (RAF), como um subproduto do processo de fundição, impactando meio ambiente, sociedade, as próprias siderurgias e aterros sanitários. Porém, por ser considerado um resíduo não perigoso e muito semelhante aos agregados minerais, seu reuso na construção civil se mostra como uma interessante alternativa, evitando os impactos do descarte, além de beneficiar financeiramente as infraestruturas construídas. Nesse contexto, este artigo objetivou a dedução de uma rota metodológica para contabilizar esta economia gerada e estimar, em termos de economia financeira e de bens ambientais, os benefícios gerados no Brasil e no município de João Pessoa, estado da Paraíba, como um estudo de caso. Dessa forma, uma equação foi obtida, abrangendo diversos aspectos da cadeia de produção e descarte de ADF/RAF, estimando economias da ordem de 500 milhões de USD anuais, além de redução de emissões de CO2 equivalente ao consumo de mais de 10 mil veículos por ano; pelo reuso da ADF/RAF produzida no Brasil.</p

NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES: a data set on carnivore distribution in the Neotropics

Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropical region: Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Otariidae; Phocidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae. Herein, we include published and unpublished data on native terrestrial Neotropical carnivores (Canidae; Felidae; Mephitidae; Mustelidae; Procyonidae; and Ursidae). NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES is a publicly available data set that includes 99,605 data entries from 35,511 unique georeferenced coordinates. Detection/non-detection and quantitative data were obtained from 1818 to 2018 by researchers, governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private consultants. Data were collected using several methods including camera trapping, museum collections, roadkill, line transect, and opportunistic records. Literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) from Portuguese, Spanish and English were incorporated in this compilation. Most of the data set consists of detection data entries (n = 79,343; 79.7%) but also includes non-detection data (n = 20,262; 20.3%). Of those, 43.3% also include count data (n = 43,151). The information available in NEOTROPICAL CARNIVORES will contribute to macroecological, ecological, and conservation questions in multiple spatio-temporal perspectives. As carnivores play key roles in trophic interactions, a better understanding of their distribution and habitat requirements are essential to establish conservation management plans and safeguard the future ecological health of Neotropical ecosystems. Our data paper, combined with other large-scale data sets, has great potential to clarify species distribution and related ecological processes within the Neotropics.
