Latin America's agricultural exports to China: Recent trends

Latin America is becoming the fastest growing agricultural production region and Brazil has by far the fastest growing agricultural sector. China from being a small agricultural importer (1.4% of world imports in 1990/01), became the fifth largest importer at 5.4% of world imports in 2006/07. China's overall trade with Latin America has expanded substantially during the last two decades -the rate of growth has been greater than any other region in the world since 2005. Most exports from Latin America to China are primary products while Chinese exports to Latin America are mostly industrial products. The Chinese demand for agricultural products is concentrated in food products such as grains and oilseeds. Countries specialised in those commodities -eg. Brazil and Argentina-exhibit a strong orientation on the Chinese market. In turn, growing subsectors in China, like fruits and vegetables, are posing strong competition to some world supplier countries in Latin America such as Chile and Peru. Since China is promoting structural reforms of its agricultural sector, aimed at increasing productivity and improving food security, and is expanding their direct investments overseas to secure provision of raw materials, Latin American governments need to pursue long-run strategic public policies. They need to optimize trade results and promote production efficiency that on one hand contribute to take advantage of the current market situation but at the same time assure the protection of the natural resources and preserve the production capacity and the agricultural diversity. --Latin America,China,trade,agriculture,soybean,agricultural policies

Sexual intercourse among adolescents in Santiago, Chile: a study of individual and parenting factors

OBJECTIVE: To examine a range of individual, parenting, and family factors associated with sexual intercourse among a community sample of youth and their families in Santiago, Chile. METHODS: Data were taken from the first wave of the Santiago Longitudinal Study conducted in January 2008–November 2009. Participants were 766 youth (mean age = 14.03 years, 51% male) from municipalities of low-to mid-socioeconomic status. Variables included emotional and behavioral subscales from the Child Behavior Checklist’s Youth Self Report, parental monitoring, family involvement, parental control and autonomy, relationship with each parent, and sexual activity. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine the odds of sexual intercourse initiation. RESULTS: Seventy (9.14%) youth reported having had sex in their lifetime; the average age of first sexual intercourse among this group was 13.5 years (Standard Deviation [SD] = 1.74) for males and 14.08 (SD = 1.40) for females. Having sex was inversely associated with withdrawn-depressed symptoms (Odds Ratio [OR] = 0.84, Confidence Interval [CI] = 0.72–0.97), but positively associated with somatic complaints (OR = 1.20, CI = 1.04–1.38) and rule breaking behavior (OR = 1.21, CI = 1.08–1.36), after adjusting for demographic and other individual and parenting variables. The majority (80%) of the youth who had had sex reported using protection at the time of last intercourse. CONCLUSIONS: Findings highlight the role that mental health problems—some of them not commonly associated with onset of sexual activity—may play in a youth’s decision to have sex. Leisure, interpersonal relationships, learning and consumption: the four key dimensions for the study of minors and screens

This study focuses on the needs Spanish minors wish to satisfy in their use of three types of screens (computers/the Internet, cell phones and video games) which can be included in the dimensions of relationships, leisure, learning and consumption. Using a representative sample of the school population in Spain aged between 10 and 18, collected in 2009, principal component analysis is applied to better understand the use of screens and see how these dimensions often interact. Turismo gay: Análisis de una modalidad turística emergente en la ciudad de Sevilla

El trabajo hace una aproximación a una modalidad turística emergente: el turismo gay. El cambio antropológico experimentado por la sociedad española en relación con esta orientación sexual repercute directamente en el despegue del turismo gay, a través de una mayor visibilidad, y en la creación de destinos especializados hacia esta demanda. Primeramente se profundiza sobre el concepto “Homosexualidad”, considerando de qué manera afecta a la sociedad, y de forma más concreta a España. En segundo lugar, se estudia Sevilla como destino turístico gay incipiente, mediante el trabajo de campo etnográfico. Concluye el trabajo con el análisis de las prácticas turísticas de este colectivo denominado LGBT (Lesbianas, Gais, Bisexual, Transexual) y la oferta disponible actual en la ciudad de Sevilla, objeto de estudio.The investigation makes an approach to an emerging form of tourism: the gay tourism. The anthropological change experienced by the Spanish society regarding this sexual orientation has a direct impact on takeoff gay tourism, through greater visibility, and the creation of specialized destinations to this demand. Firstly, deepens on "Homosexuality" concept, considering how it affects society, and more specifically to Spain form. Secondly, Seville is studied as incipient gay tourist destination, through ethnographic fieldwork. Río Negro, Argentina.Macrogryphosaurus gondwanicus is the largest Elasmaria (Dinosauria, Ornithischia) known up to the date, from the Upper Cretaceous of Patagonia. The present contribution provides a detailed description of Macrogryphosaurus anatomy based on the holotype and only known specimen. This dinosaur presents several unique features along its vertebral column that distinguishes it from other ornithopods: the neck is notably elongated by the acquisition of an additional cervical vertebra, having 10 cervical plus 14 dorsal vertebrae, being the number of dorsals minor than in other taxa, which usually have 16. This implies that Macrogryphosaurus represents a new ornithopod morphotype, with long neck and short thorax. Moreover, three autapomorphies are here added to the original diagnosis of Macrogryphosaurus: presence of poorly developed diapophyses in the cervical vertebrae, anterior and posterior processes on the boatshaped haemal arches, and a pubic foot in the postpubic process. The dorsoventral length of haemal arches indicate the ventral limit of the M. caudofemoralis longus and their posterior tapering so as the dorsal limit of the M. ilio-ischiocaudalis and its posterior ascension and dominance in the posterior-most portion of tail, resembling to the tail of some coelurosaur dinosaurs
